Pagham Harbour was
declared as a Local
Nature Reserve (LNR)
in 1964 and is almost
600 hectares in size
with around 280
hectares of salt marsh
and tidal mudflats.

Chichester Ship Canal
was opened in 1823.
One of the regular
cargoes on the canal
was gold bullion from
Portsmouth to the
Bank of England.
Water voles are a
protected species and
have been seen in the
canal.

The Reserve is
surrounded by many
habitats including
shingle, open water,
reed swamp and wet
permanent grassland.
There are many rare
species of fauna and
flora in the Reserve
including seals,
wasp-spiders, herons,
shrews, voles,
butterflies along with
many species of
breeding and
migratory birds.

There are 2 alternative routes to get to point 1,


follow either a,b,c or A,B,C,D.

Start at the Market Cross and


follow the cycle route along
South Street on road. Be careful,
as there can be heavy traffic.

Follow the one-way system bearing


right along Basin Road towards the
canal basin and turn left onto the
cycle route to Hunston. Here the
route is a designated cycle path.

The Walnut
Tree

At the Hunston bridge, follow the


cycle route left towards North
Mundham on road ignoring the
cycle route sign to Hunston.

Take care crossing into


Church Road at North
Mundham indicated as blue
cycle route 88. Continue for
approximately 2km.

Start at the Market Cross and


follow the cycle route along East
Street. Cycling restrictions apply
between 09.00 and 17.00.
This part of the route is on road
and there can be heavy traffic.
Turn right onto St Johns Street.
Cross Market Avenue and turn
down Caledonian Road following
cycle route signs to Bognor Regis.
The route turns right onto Lyndhurst
Road, crosses Whyke Lane and left
onto Cleveland Road. At the end of
Cleveland Road, turn right onto
Whyke Road and turn left onto Quarry
Lane. At the end of Quarry Lane, cross
the A27 using the footbridge giving
way to pedestrians.

There have been four


major reclamations of
Pagham Harbour to
secure land for
agriculture and reduce
erosion however,
during storm periods,
the sea breached
defences and it was
decided to leave the
land as a tidal inlet.

Follow the cycle route south


along Vinnetrow Road and turn
right following the blue cycle
route signs through the Lakes
and along School Lane.

At the end of Fisher Lane, the


route continues on a mostly
clay track with some minor
roads and concrete. There are
a series of gates and cattle
grids and grazing animals
from here to Pagham Harbour.
Turn left onto Rookery Lane
and follow into Mill Lane
passing the pub. Cycle round
the harbour turning left off
Mill Lane following a narrow
cycle path shared with
pedestrians to the Nature
Reserve. Please take care.
