Summary of the Proceedings


During the Golden Jubilee Celebrations of the Pt. Ravishankar
Shukla University, Raipur School of Studies in Ancient Indian History,
Culture and Archaeology, Pt. Ravishankar Shukla University, Raipur had
organized three day (13,14 and 15th January, 2014) national seminar on
Philosophy of Nagarjuna in collaboration and financial support with
Central University of Tibetan Studies, Sarnath and Chhattisgarh Tourism
Board, Raipur in the holy presence of Nobel Laureate his holiness Dalai
Lama along with warm presence of Dr. Raman Singh Chief Minister of
Chhattisgarh.
In this seminar learned scholars of Indian philosophy, Ancient
Indian Culture and Buddhism will discuss contribution of Buddhism in
general and Acharya Nagarjuna in particular to Indian culture and its
relevance to the contemporary world.

First Day: 13th January, 2014

On Monday the 13th January 2014

the National

Seminar on Philosophy of Nagarjuna was inaugurated by


Chief Guest - Nobel Laureate his holiness Dalai Lama by
lighting the lamp and other dignitaries on the dais. It was
followed by the flower welcome and Welcome address by
Dr. Dinesh Nandini Parihar, Convener of the Seminar. The
key note speaker was Prof. Ngawang Samten, Vice
Chancellor, Central University of Tibetan Studies, Sarnath.
The seminar was presided by Honorable Vice- Chancellor of
Pt. Ravishankar Shukla University, Raipur, Dr. S.K. Pandey.
The Seminar theme Lecture was by Chief Guest of the
seminar Nobel Laureate his holiness Dalai Lama. There was
Presidential speech by Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh Dr.
Raman Singh.

Chief Guest of occasion his holiness Dalai Lama spoke


about the relevance, importance and life history of
Nagarjuna.
Prof. Ngawang Samten, Vice Chancellor, Central
University of Tibetan Studies, Sarnath, stated that, Acharya
Nagarjuna has made very important contribution not only
to the development of the Buddhist philosophy but also to
the development of the Indian philosophy in general.
The Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh Dr. Raman Singh
expressed that it is a great honor for Chhattisgarh that such
a big national seminar is being held and his holiness Dalai
Lama made his auspicious presence here. He also focused
on Acharya Nagarjunas life and his excellent works.

Inaugural was immediately followed by several
scholarly lectures. This session was very precious as it was

addressed by six eminent scholars. Prof. Sitaram Dubey ,


Prof. Ambikadutta Sharma , Prof. PradeepGokhale, Prof. R.P.
Pandey, Shri A.K. Sharma and Prof. D. K. Mohanta.

Next day on Thursday 14th January session began at 9:30 after


breakfast with lecture of Prof. S.R. Bhatt on Nagarjuna on the Doctrine
of Praitityasamutpada after that Prof. L.N. Shastri Asso. Prof. from
Central University of Tibetan studies Sarnath focused on Etymology of
Pratityasamutpada: An Analysis in Madhyamika. Prof. S. N. Kapoor
revealed their thoughts Buddism and Pragya and contribution of
Nagarjuna. Thereafter, Prof. Sandhya Pandey stated Bodh darshan me
nagarjun ka shoonya wadh. Dr. Tashi Tsering from Sarnath expressed
his thoughts on Nagarjunas tradition in India and Tibet. Prof. Abhay
kumar Singh from Rohilkhand university Bareliy, UP spoke on unya vis-

a-vis Purna : Comprehending the Salient Ideas of Ngrjuna and


riKrshna. Prof. Penpa Dorji from Sarnath threw light on Nagarjunas
Concept of dependent origination with special reference to
Prattyasamudpddicavibhanganirdesanmasutra.

Bhattacharya from Rabindra bharti University stated on Nagarjunas


Convention-based semantics: A Defence. Many other scholars
presented their thoughts on Philosophy of Nagarguna, the main among
them are- Prof. Mantini Prasad, Prof. Lakshman Prasad Mishra, Dr. D.
Jayasree, Prof. Madumita Chattopadhaya.

Sirpur visit
After the session the scholars had lunch and proceeded for Sirpur
visit (80km approx from Raipur) which was the ancient capital of South
Kosal to see the ancient religious unity, culture and society since
600B.C.

It has many excavated sites and well developed buddist

viharas. A famous brick temple and cave.

Cultural Programme
The event was begun at 7.00 PM to 8.30 PM in the University
Auditorium. Some artists from Indira Kala Sangeet University,
Khairagarh performed classical dances and musical events. All speakers,
delegates and participants are enjoyed the cultural evening.

On Friday 15th January session began at 9:30 after breakfast first


lecture was delivered by Prof. H. S. Prasad from department of
Philosophy University of Delhi. The main attraction of this session was
the presence of his holiness Dalai Lama who participated actively.
Thereafter, Prof. C. S. Gupta from Nagpur University threw light on ARYA
NAGARJUNA AND VIDARBHA. Dr. Byomakesh Tripathi fron IGNTOU

Amarkantak spoke on Buddism in South Kosala with special reference


to Chhattisgarh. Dr. Archana Sharma from BHU Varanasi, Spoke on
Iconometric Study of the Buddha Images: A Case Study at Sarnath
Museum. Also Dr. Arpita Chakravarti from BHU spoke on The Evolution
of Buddhist Vihara. Many other scholars presented their views on
philosophy of Nagarjuna. Main among them are-Shri Vijay Krinti Dr.

Vatsala Srivastava, Dr. Radhey shyam Shukla, Dr. Mona Jain. The
session ended at 12:30 PM.

In this Parallel Stated Dr. B.S. Patel, Dr. Kiran Thakur stated on
Nagarjuna: Father of Iatrochemistry. Thereafter stated Mahendra K.
Premi, Dr. Mangalanand Jha. Scholar Umesh Kumar Khute spoke on
Thought as a substance through and by the mind: A critical study of
ureal reality, and its implication in Nagarjunas Philosophy of emptiness.
Priya Diwan & Dr. ShrutiJha presented their view on Nagarjuna: In the
Light of His Teachings. Dr. Surya S. Raj stated on Nagarjuna AGreat
Sage in Rasashatra. Many others scholar are also presented their
thoughts on Philosophy of Nagarjuan. Main among are Makshood
Ahmed, Dr. Pramod K Shukla, Dr. Asha Chaudhary, Dr R.K. Sukhdev. The
interesting session ended at 12.30 PM there was an arrangement of
lunch for speakers, delegates etc. in guest house.

Valedictory Function
After a long & fruitful discussion, Valedictory function started at
2.00 PM in which Shri Ajay Chandrakar Honble Minister of Tourism &
Culture, C.G. State was chief guest and Prof. S. K. Pandey Honble ViceChancellor, Pt. RSU, Raipur was presiding over this function. Flower
welcome was followed with presentation of shawl, shreefal and
memento to all the dignitaries on the dais by Dr. Dinesh Nandini
Parihar, Convener of Programme. Mayor of Raipur, Smt. Kiranmayi
Nayar, Finance secretary D.S. Mishra (IAS), Prof. S.N. Joshi Vice
Chancellor, Kushabhau Thakre University, Prof. N. D. R. Chandra, ViceChancellor Bastar Univeristy, Prof. Gauri Dutta Sharma, ViceChancellor, Bilaspur University and Santosh Mishra (IAS) MD
Chhattisgarh Tourism Board were also present during this function.

Public Lecture by His holiness Dalai Lama


Special Highlight of the Day was Public lecture delivered by Nobel
Laureate his holiness Dalai Lama on wisdom & compassion. The
lecture started at 3.00 PM in the University Auditorium. During
discussion with the audience he accepted to answer all the questions
and beautifully explained and satisfied the curiosity of students, general
public and some foreigners present there.
