ENLACE’S Los Compañeros program
believes that every student is a valuable
member of our community and has the
inherent capacity to reach his or her
goals in life. However, students from
diverse economic and cultural back-
grounds often do not have the opportu-
nity to attain their full potential. The
mission of Los Compañeros is to pro-
mote academic and personal success
among Hispanic middle and high
school students through a culturally
relevant mentoring program provided
by university students.
The key objectives of Los Compañeros middle
schools (Garfield, Truman, & Washington)
are to:
• Foster student’s ethnic identity by rais-
ing cultural awareness
• Enhance student’s self-concept by build-
ing confidence in their knowledge,
skills and abilities
• Raise student’s academic achievement
by developing literary and study skills
• Build leadership skills among the uni-
versity student mentors while working
toward these objectives.

The key objectives of Los Compañeros
high schools (Albuquerque, Highland,
Valley, & West Mesa) are to:
• Raise and maintain student aca-
demic achievement
• Encourage and prepare students to
consider higher education as a real
option in their lives
• Assist students in making the tran-
sition from middle to high school
• Assist students in making the tran-
sition from high school to college
• Assist students in developing long-
term goals
Los Compañeros meets these objectives by:
• Building positive relationships be-
tween mentors and middle and high
school students,
• Devising and engaging in construc-
tive activities,
• Promoting emotional support and
helping students understand their
academic tasks.
