Acitytaskforcehasbeencreatedtofindasuitablelocationforanewyouthcenter.Theyhave
askedyoutoanalyzedataandprovidethemwithamapshowingatleastthreedifferent
buildingsthatmeettheircriteria.
Tofindthepotentialbuildingsfortheyouthcenter,youwillworkwiththeArcGIStoolsthathelp
youfindfeaturesbasedontheirattributesandspatialrelationshipswithotherfeatures.

Step1 StartArcMapandopenamapdocument
StartArcMap.
IntheArcMapGettingStarteddialogbox,underExistingMaps,click"Browseformore."
BrowsetoyourLearnArcGIS10\Startfolderanddoubleclickyouthcenter.mxd.
Whenthemapopens,youseefourlayersintheTableofContents,butonlyonelayer
(YouthPopulation)iscurrentlydisplayedonthemap.
Doyouseeanerrormessagewhenyoutrytoopenthemap?
Ifthemapdoesn'tfillthedisplayarea,clicktheFullExtentbutton

Populationuseslighttodarkshadedsymbolstorepresentthenumberofyouthineach
block.
Theabilitytocreatemultiplelayersfromonedatasourceandsymbolizethembasedon
differentattributesisapowerfulfeatureofaGIS,andyouwilllearnhowtodothisin
thenextmodule.

times,tryingtovisuallydeterminetheareasthatmeetthetaskforcecriteria.
TheareasofinterestareshadeddarkintheYouthPopulationlayer(highyouth
population)andblueintheCityZoneslayer(residentiallanduse).Canyoutellwhere
featuresthatmeetbothcriteriaarelocated?
Inthiscase,avisualanalysisisverydifficultbecausethecensusblocksandthecity
zonesdon'tlineupwellandyoucan'tviewtheYouthPopulationandCityZoneslayers
atthesametimetheyarebothpolygonlayersandonelayeralwayscoversupthe
other.
Howcanyougettheinformationthetaskforceneeds?
AGISallowsyoutoqueryandcombinedatatoproducenewinformation.Tosolvethis
problem,youneedtocombinethecensusdataandCityZoneslayers.Onceyouhaveall
thedatayouneedinonelayer,youcanquerythenewlayertofindtheareasthatmeet
bothcriteria.

menu.

IntheSaveastypedropdownlistatthebottomofthedialogbox,choosePDF.
Forthefilename,enterPotential_Youth_Center_Locations.
