New Pauly Online features the complete sets of both Brills New
Pauly and Metzlers Der Neue Pauly. The encyclopedic coverage
and high academic standard of the work, the interdisciplinary and
contemporary approach and clear and accessible presentation
have made the New Pauly the unrivalled modern reference
work for the ancient world. Fifteen volumes (Antiquity, 1-15) are
devoted to Greco-Roman antiquity and cover more than two
thousand years of history, ranging from the second millennium
BC to early medieval Europe. Special emphasis is given to the
interaction between Greco-Roman culture on the one hand,
and Semitic, Celtic, Germanic, and Slavonic culture, and ancient
Judaism, Christianity, and Islam on the other hand. Five volumes
(Classical Tradition, I-V) are uniquely concerned with the long and
influential aftermath of antiquity and the process of continuous
reinterpretation and revaluation of the ancient heritage, including
the history of classical scholarship. New Pauly Online is the unique
dual-language online version of this standard reference work for
students and scholars.

Frontiers of Philosophy in China aims to

disseminate new scholarly achievements in
the field of broadly defined philosophy, and
promote philosophical researches of the
highest level by publishing peer-reviewed
academic articles that facilitate intensive or
extensive communication and cooperation
between philosophers in China and
abroad. It covers nearly all main branches
of philosophy, with priorities given to
original works on Chinese philosophy or in
comparative studies of Chinese philosophy
and other kinds of philosophy in the world.

The peer-reviewed journal, Journal of

Chinese Humanities, is an English-language
extension of Literature, History and
Philosophy (Wen Shi Zhe), a famous Chinese
journal published by Shandong University.
The content is not restricted to one aspect of
Chinese culture but rather spans important
topics within the fields of Chinese history,
philosophy, and literature. It covers both
traditional and modern areas of re-search.
Importantly, as opposed to most English
language journals that treat on Chinese
studies, this journal aims to represent the
current research coming out of mainland
China. Thus each issue will be composed
primarily of articles from Chinese scholars
working at Chinese institutions, while at
the same time including a small number of
articles from foreign authors so as to provide
opposing perspectives. This way, top scholars
in China can be read in the Western world,
and our Western readers will benefit from a
native perspective and first hand material
and research coming out of China.
This journal primarily targets academics
in the English-speaking world who are
interested in multiple aspects of Chinese
civilization and humanities.

The Journal of Moral Philosophy is a peerreviewed journal of moral, political and

legal philosophy with an international
focus. It publishes articles in all areas of
normative philosophy, including pure and
applied ethics, as well as moral, legal, and
political theory. Articles exploring nonWestern traditions are also welcome. The
Journal seeks to promote lively discussions
and debates for established academics
and the wider community, by publishing
articles that avoid unnecessary jargon
without sacrificing academic rigour. It
encourages contributions from newer
members of the philosophical community.
The Journal of Moral Philosophy is
published published six times a year. One
issue per year is devoted to a particular
theme and each issue will contain articles,
discussion pieces, review essays and book
reviews.

Philosophy of history is a rapidly expanding

area. There is growing interest today in:
what constitutes knowledge of the past, the
ontology of past events, the relationship
of language to the past, and the nature of
representations of the past. These interests
are distinct from although connected with
contemporary epistemology, philosophy
of science, metaphysics, philosophy of
language, and aesthetics. Hence we need
a distinct venue in which philosophers
can explore these issues. The Journal of the
Philosophy of History provides such a venue.

Ever since neo-Kantianism, philosophy

of history has been central to all of
philosophy, whether or not particular
philosophers recognized its potential
significance. No philosophic account of
knowledge and truth can be considered
worthwhile unless it addresses the issue
of how we relate to our past. The Journal
of the Philosophy of History assumes that
epistemology, philosophy of language, and
philosophy of science are incomplete if
they ignore history.

The journal Intellectual History of the

In the medieval, late medieval and premodern world of Islam, Muslims, Jews and
Christians constituted a unique cultural
and intellectual commonality. They
shared a language, Arabic (and at times
Persian), which they spoke in daily life and
which they also used for their theological,
philosophical, legal and scientific writings.
Moreover, they often read the same books,
so that a continuous, multi-dimensional
exchange of ideas, texts, and forms of
discourse was the norm rather than the
exception. While this has been amply
demonstrated for some selected periods
and regions, scholars usually opt for a
one-dimensional approach with an (often
exclusive) focus on either Muslim, Jewish or
Christian authors and their writings.

Phenomenology
Edited by John Sallis, Boston College
Associate editor: James Risser, Seattle

The peer-reviewed Journal of

Phenomenological Psychology publishes
articles that advance the discipline of
psychology from the perspective of the
Continental phenomenology movement.
Within that tradition, phenomenology is
understood in the broadest possible sense
including its transcendental, existential,
hermeneutic, and narrative strands and is
not meant to convey the thought of any one
individual. Articles advance the discipline
of psychology by applying phenomenology
to enhance the fields philosophical
foundations, critical reflection, theoretical
development, research methodologies,
empirical research, and applications in
such areas as clinical, educational, and
organizational psychology.

Research in Phenomenology deals with

phenomenological philosophy in a broad
sense, including original phenomenological
research, critical and interpretative studies
of major phenomenological thinkers,
studies relating phenomenological
philosophy to other disciplines, and
historical studies of special relevance to
phenomenological philosophy.

Timing is ever-present in our everyday life

from the ringing sounds of the alarm clock
to our ability to walk, dance, remember,
and communicate with others. This
intimate relationship has lead scientists
from different disciplines to investigate
time and to explore how individuals
perceive, process, and effectively use timing
in their daily activities.

The main objective of Art & Perception

is to provide a high-quality platform to
publish new artwork and research in
the multi-disciplinary emerging bridge
between art and perception. As such it aims
to become the top venue to explore the
links between the science of perception
and the arts, and to bring together artists,
researchers, scholars and students in a
unified community that can cooperate,
discuss and develop new scientific
perspectives in this complex and intriguing
new field.

Time bears a unique and direct pertinence to

all human concerns. Time is a fundamental
feature of the physical universe, of the life
process, of the functions of the mind, and of
collective behaviour. Time is an all-pervasive,
intimate and immediate part of human
experience. Time has been the subject of
much study and debate in the arts, the
sciences, the social and behavioral sciences
and the humanities.
Since 1966, the International Society for the
Study of Time (ISST) has been providing a
framework for an interdisciplinary dialogue
about the nature of time. KronoScope,
edited by an international board of
scholars, carries forward the work of ISST.
It offers a forum for the cross-fertilization
of scholarly and scientific study about
the nature of time as seen from a range of
perspectives and disciplines. As a journal, it
can accommodate the expanding concerns
of the global community in search of
understanding and meaning.

Timing & Time Perception aims to

become the forum for all psychophysical,
neuroimaging, pharmacological,
computational, and theoretical advances
on the topic of timing and time perception
in humans and other animals. We
envision a multidisciplinary approach
to the topics covered, including the
synergy of: Neuroscience and Philosophy
for understanding the concept of time,
Cognitive Science and Artificial Intelligence
for adapting basic research to artificial
agents, Psychiatry, Neurology, Behavioral
and Computational Sciences for neurorehabilitation and modeling of the
disordered brain, to name just a few.

The purpose is not to minimize or erase the

differences between the arts and sciences,
which are grounded in venerable histories
that are in many ways necessarily distinct.
Rather, the ambition of the journal is to
combine the differing methods and insights
of artists and scientists in order to expand
our knowledge of art and perceptual
experience in a way that neither could do
alone.

Edited by Sylvain Delcomminette,

Philosophical and Scientific

Investigations

Unlike the Phaedo itself, its reception

in Antiquity remains little studied. By
examining the extant commentaries, their
sources, and the dialogues presence in
the reflections of ancient thinkers outside
the Platonic tradition, this volume aims to
reconstruct its ancient history.

The Problemata physica has long been

neglected. The essays in this collection do
much to remedy this, and provide insights
into the nature of philosophical inquiry in
the Lyceum during Aristotles life and in the
years following his death.

Ilsetraut Hadot, translated by Michael Chase

This volume deals with the Neoplatonist

tendency to harmonize the philosophies
of Plato and Aristotle. It shows that this
harmonizing tendency, born in Middle
Platonism, prevailed in Neoplatonism
from Porphyry and Iamblichus, where it
persisted until the end of this philosophy.

Hadot aims to illustrate that it is not the

different schools themselves, for instance
those of Athens and Alexandria, that
differ from one another by the intensity of
the will to harmonization, but groups of
philosophers within these schools.

A Sensualist Interpretation of Time

in Augustine, Confessions X to XII

Edited by Hubert Cancik and Helmuth Schneider (Antiquity), and Manfred

Landfester (Classical Tradition)
Managing Editors English Edition: Christine F. Salazar (Antiquity) and Francis
G. Gentry (Classical Tradition)

Brills New Pauly is the first lexicographic

project that both differentiates between
Greco-Roman antiquity itself and its
subsequent images, and demonstrates the
close connection between antiquity and
its aftermath. Volumes 1 to 15 (Antiquity)

are devoted to Greco-Roman antiquity.

Volumes I to V (Classical Tradition) are
uniquely concerned with the long and
influential aftermath of the classical
heritage.

David van Dusen, Katholieke

Universiteit Leuven

In The Space of Time, David van Dusen

argues that Augustines time-investigation
in Confessions XI has been fundamentally
misinterpreted since the 13th century. This
is a path-breaking new work on Augustines
Confessions and a ranging contribution to
the history of the concept of time.

Transformations of
Time and Temporality in
Medieval and Renaissance
Art
Simona Cohen, Tel-Aviv University

Drawing on recent scholarship, with essays

by a selection of international scholars, this
volume throws new light on the literary
persona of Peter Abelard (1079-1142), one
of the most diversely gifted people of the
Middle Ages.

A multifaceted picture of the dynamic

concepts of time and temporality is
demonstrated in medieval and Renaissance
art, as adopted in speculative, ecclesiastical,
socio-political, propagandist, moralistic,
and poetic contexts. Questions regarding
perception of time are investigated
through innovative aspects of Renaissance
iconography.

Mexican missions between the midsixteenth century and the early seventeenth
century. The analysis identifies a change in
worldviews between these two moments
and attempts to explain this change
through a shift from a model of vision to a
model of touch.

Die Macht des Gedchtnisses: Entstehung und Wandel

Augsburg
Winner of the Universittspreis der Regierung von Schwaben, 2013
Mathias Franc Kluge

This study offers a new view on the

development of an urban culture of
writing in one of the major cities of late
medieval Europe. Via the examination of
a tremendous number of documents from
the Augsburg city archive it shows how

civic authorities started to rely more and

more on written records, which in turn
created the need for archiving. The power
of this process primarily resulted from a
growing desire for supervision and control.

The Historical Materialism Book Series is a

major publishing initiative of the radical
left. The capitalist crisis of the twenty-first
century has been met by a resurgence of
interest in critical Marxist theory. At the
same time, the publishing institutions
committed to Marxism have contracted
markedly since the high point of the 1970s.
The Historical Materialism Book Series
is dedicated to addressing this situation
by making available important works of
Marxist theory. The aim of the series is to
publish important theoretical contributions
as the basis for vigorous intellectual debate
and exchange on the left. We are convinced
that a project of this kind can make an
important contribution to the revitalisation
of critical politics and intellectual culture.

Stephen Hastings-King

Alan Shandro, Laurentian University

People often talk about the groove of

music, but what is it, and what does it
mean? Why has groove-based music come
to dominate in the West and increasingly
across the world?

In Lenin and the Logic of Hegemony

Alan Shandro traces the emergence
of the concept of hegemony in
Lenins engagement with the concrete
characteristics of the class struggle in
Russia and thereby clarifies how the
concept works.

Looking for the Proletariat is the first

from 1949 to 1957. It explores the group, its
contexts and the collapse of the Marxist

An important and comprehensive presentation of the social and

political thought of Bertolt Brecht. Squiers argues that Brecht, the
well-known poet and dramatist, should also be considered a social
and political thinker in his own right. Relying on close readings of
Brechts poems, plays, stage directions and other writings, Squiers
reveals the theoretical significance of Brechts distinctive account of
praxis as well as his critique of instrumental rationality. This is a truly

Environmental Philosophy: A Revaluation

of Cosmopolitan Ethics from an Ecocentric
Standpoint calls for a new approach to ethics.
Starting from the necessity for all life of
air, water, and food, the book revalues the
relation of ethics and environmentalism.
Using insights of the environmental ethicists,
environmental ethics becomes the model for
ethics as a whole. Humans are part of a larger
environment. Cosmopolitanism should be
revised in accord with environmental ethics.
The book applies a new theory of values
to the relation of value and obligation,
and of duty, rights and virtue, to accord
with ecocentrism. The book also critically
evaluates Utilitarianism and the self interest
theory. Other chapters address population,
species preservation and a practical program

Is writing about peace after the Rwandan Genocide self-defeating? Whether it is

the intensity of the massacres, the popularity of the genocide, or the imaginary
forms of cruelty, however one looks at it, everything in the Rwandan Genocide
appears to defy once again the possibility of thinking peace anew. In order to
address this problem, this book investigates the work of specific French and
Rwandese philosophers in order to renew our understanding of peace today.
Through this path-breaking investigation, peace no longer stands for an ideal
in the future, but becomes a structure of inter-subjectivity that guarantees that
the violence of language always prevails over any other form of violence. This
book is the very first monograph in philosophy related to the events of 1994
in Rwanda.

Aesthetic Vision in the Wake of Darwin:

18701920

Alexander Naraniecki

Alexander Naraniecki

This book analyses Darwins influence on art and the

effect of his science on experiences of beauty. The first
chapter discusses Darwins great forerunner, Alexander
von Humboldt, and his contribution to thinking about
the relationship between science and beauty. The second
examines the public reception of Darwin in Germany,
focusing on the German Naturalists and the important
scientific controversies which Darwins idea provoked.
It shows the political use of science (Hckel and
Virchow) and foreshadows present-day debates between
Darwinism and Creationism, science and an idealized
view of nature.

Over the last few years there has been a resurgent
interest in various scientific disciplines in Poppers
arguments. To gain a greater appreciation of Poppers
scientific arguments, they need to be viewed in relation
to his broader philosophy and where this stands within
the history of ideas. This book aims to take seriously
those aspects of Poppers writings that have received
less attention and wherein he advanced metaphysical,
speculative, mystical-poetic, aesthetic and Platonic
arguments. Such arguments are crucial for an appreciation
of his scientific and political writings. I argue that Popper,
much like Wittgenstein previously has been misconstrued
as an Anglo-analytic philosopher. This book provides an
interpretation of Poppers mature philosophy within his
Central-European intellectual context. The aim of which
is to open up a fruitful line of investigation into Poppers
thought that I hope would continue over the coming
years.

Environmental Philosophy: A Revaluation

of Cosmopolitan Ethics from an Ecocentric
Standpoint calls for a new approach to ethics.
Starting from the necessity for all life of
air, water, and food, the book revalues the
relation of ethics and environmentalism.
Using insights of the environmental ethicists,
environmental ethics becomes the model for
ethics as a whole. Humans are part of a larger
environment. Cosmopolitanism should be
revised in accord with environmental ethics.
The book applies a new theory of values
to the relation of value and obligation,
and of duty, rights and virtue, to accord
with ecocentrism. The book also critically
evaluates Utilitarianism and the self interest
theory. Other chapters address population,
species preservation and a practical program
for environmental policy.

In response to the grim realities of the

present world, Jewish thought has not
tended to retreat into eschatological
fantasy, but rather to project utopian
visions precisely on to the present
moment, envisioning redemptions that
are concrete, immanent, and necessarily
political in nature. The purpose of this
book is to contribute to the deeper
understanding of the relationship
between Jewish thought, utopia, and
revolution, by taking a fresh look at its

This book argues that aradical political gesture

can be found in Sren Kierkegaards writings. The
chapters navigate an interdisciplinary landscape
by placing Kierkegaards passionate thought in
conversation with the writings of Georg Lukcs,
Carl Schmitt, Walter Benjamin and Theodor
Adorno. At the heart of the books argument is
the concept of indirect politics, which names
a negative space between methods, concepts,
and intellectual acts in the work of Kierkegaard,
as well as marking the dynamic relations
between Kierkegaard and the aforementioned
thinkers. Kierkegaards indirect politics is a set
of masks that displaces identities from one field
to the next: theology masks politics; law masks
theology; political theory masks philosophy; and
psychology masks literary approaches to truth.
As reflected inLukcs, Schmitt, Benjamin, and
Adorno,this book examines howKierkegaards
indirect politics sets into relief three significant
motifs: intellectual non-conformism, indirect
communication in and through ambiguous
identities, and negative dialectics.

This volume is a precursor in the powerful

theorizing of the Cognitive Sciences that
is being brought to bear in the Philosophy
of Mind and in the theory of Law, and this
theorizing will increase in the coming
years.

This book argues that peace must be a

public thing. With essays by committed
peace philosophers, this volume shows how
public engagement has been a significant
feature of peace philosophy.

This volume contains almost thirty papers

by Kazimierz Twardowski (1866-1938), the
founder of the Lvov-Warsaw School, now
published in English for the first time.

Making Mind: Moral Sense and Consciousness in Philosophy,

Science, and Literature posits the genesis of narrative as an adaptive
function stemming from consciousness and moral sense. The book
is unique with its idea of the individual character evolving narrative
in relation to the group. Central to the argument is the claim
that prehistorically, consciousness and moral sense intersected to
form narrative. More than addressing the origin of story, the book
examines and explains the evolution of narrative. The book is an
interesting study of how our species-inherited moral sense can differ
dramatically from one individual to another. While mores pertain
to a group, narrative comes from and is processed by the individual
and reaches its high point in the novel. We see how the moral sense
works in characters as a monitor, and we feel it operating in us as
readers in terms of approval, or not.

toward reader-response ethical criticism and the history of ideas by
examining major English novels from the years 1720 to 1930 and,
more specifically, falls in line with evolutionary cultural studies.
His previous books include: Character and Consciousness: George
Eliot, Thomas Hardy, E.M. Forster, D.H. Lawrence (2005), Ethos

This is a truly
interdisciplinary work that speaks to political and critical theorists as
well as to scholars of contemporary literature and theatre.

Squiers monograph makes the case that

Brecht is the Missing Link in Western
Discourse, the link that connects
philosophy to literature to theater to
politics to common sense.

Making Mindis a significant addition to

the growing field of evolutionary literary
criticism, illustrating not only the by now
remarkable scope of this line of inquiry
but also the fundamental applicability of
evolutionary psychology to the study of
literature.

This is the third volume of the new series Social, Political, &
Legal Philosophy and it deals with the relationship between
Law and The Philosophy of Action.
In this volume a number of legal issues are illuminated by
resource to the analysis of mental concepts. Issues in Criminal
Law, Contract Law, Acceptance of Legal Systems, and the
nature of Legal Norms are some of the main issues dealt in
the papers that constitute the volume. Conceptual analysis is
used and new overtures are made into current findings in the
Cognitive Sciences. All of this results in illuminating accounts
that throw new light on traditional fundamental legal issues.
This volume is a precursor in the powerful theorizing of
the Cognitive Sciences that is being brought to bear in
the Philosophy of Mind and in the theory of Law, and this
theorizing will increase in the coming years.

Against this background the book shows the effect of
Darwin on three important fields: the perception of

as revealed in bird-painting; and the understanding of
the relationship between the human body and character.

of ethnicity, and on debates about acting, including for
the young Brecht.

This book provides the first in-depth

exploration of the importance of music
for Ludwig Wittgensteins life and work,
whose remarks on music are essential for
understanding his philosophy.

This book analyses Darwins influence

on art and the effect of his science on
experiences of beauty. It brings together
Darwinswork with that of major European
novelists, focusing on the place of the older
understandings of physiognomy related to
ethnicity.

In this book the author argues that Popper

previously has been misconstrued as an
Anglo-analytic philosopher but should
be appreciated in his Central-European
intellectual context, based also on his
metaphysical, speculative, mystical-poetic,
aesthetic and Platonic arguments.

RETURNING TO KARL POPPER

This book analyses Darwins influence on art and the

effect of his science on experiences of beauty. The first
chapter discusses Darwins great forerunner, Alexander
von Humboldt, and his contribution to thinking about
the relationship between science and beauty. The second
examines the public reception of Darwin in Germany,
focusing on the German Naturalists and the important
scientific controversies which Darwins idea provoked.
It shows the political use of science (Hckel and
Virchow) and foreshadows present-day debates between
Darwinism and Creationism, science and an idealized
view of nature.

Aesthetic Vision in the Wake of Darwin:

18701920

Over the last few years there has been a resurgent

interest in various scientific disciplines in Poppers
arguments. To gain a greater appreciation of Poppers
scientific arguments, they need to be viewed in relation
to his broader philosophy and where this stands within
the history of ideas. This book aims to take seriously
those aspects of Poppers writings that have received
less attention and wherein he advanced metaphysical,
speculative, mystical-poetic, aesthetic and Platonic
arguments. Such arguments are crucial for an appreciation
of his scientific and political writings. I argue that Popper,
much like Wittgenstein previously has been misconstrued
as an Anglo-analytic philosopher. This book provides an
interpretation of Poppers mature philosophy within his
Central-European intellectual context. The aim of which
is to open up a fruitful line of investigation into Poppers
thought that I hope would continue over the coming
years.

Genomics and Democracy

In Search of a New Ethics

Towards a Lingua Democratica

for the Public Debate on Genomics.

Jean-Paul Martinon

Edited by Peter Derkx and Harry

Kunneman

This book is the very first monograph in

philosophy related to the events of 1994
in Rwanda, covering the work of specific
French and Rwandese philosophers in
order to renew our understanding of peace
today.

This book addresses the ethical and

political questions flowing from the vastly
increased possibilities to manipulate the
genetic properties of organisms, including
human beings. The contributors explore
the idea of a lingua democratica for the
life sciences.

Open Access Publishing

Open, Sustainable, High-Quality
For over three centuries Brill has been a key partner in the
dissemination of scholarly publications, primarily in
the Humanities, Social Sciences and International Law.
Now the era of Open Access offers us new ways to support
our authors in reaching their readership.
Brill Open offers authors the option to make their writing freely available online in Open Access. This can be by
choice or to comply with funding mandates or university requirements. Brill offers various options of Open Access,
allowing authors to publish in their choice of journal (hybrid), in one of Brills fully Open Access journals, or in one
of Brills numerous book series.
Brill Open is available to authors only upon acceptance of their paper or book. This prevents interference with the
peer review process and editorial decision making to avoid a potential conflict of interests.

Brill Open Journals

Brill publishes a growing number of fully Open Access journals. These undergo the same rigorous peer review and
uphold the same high-quality publication standards that Brill is known for. The APCs of some of these journals are
fully or partly covered by sponsors. To see a listing of these titles, visit: brill.com/brillopen.
Brill Open Books
As a major publisher in the Humanities, Social Sciences and International Law, Brill values its academic book
publications, and is, therefore, extending Brill Open to include books and book chapters.

IFLA/Brill Open Access Award

The IFLA/Brill Open Access award rewards initiatives that facilitate and/or promote Open Access
Scholarly Monographs in the humanities or social sciences. The winner of the first award (2013) is Open
Book Publishers (Cambridge, UK). More information about the IFLA/Brill Open Access Award can be
found at ifla.org.
Brill Open offers Discounts or Waivers for Authors from Developing Countries
Article Publication Charges (APCs) are reduced or waived for authors from developing countries in the
case of fully open access journals. To find out if you qualify for this scheme contact brillopen@brill.com.
Brill and OASPA
Brill is a member of the Open Access Scholarly Publishers Association (OASPA). The association promotes
and supports scholarly publishers that offer reputable open access publications and reliable open access
publishing services. View Brills membership profile page here: oaspa.org/member-record-brill.
Brill and DOAB
Brill is a proud sponsor of the Directory of Open Access Books (DOAB, doabooks.org), which includes
Brills Open Access book titles. Brills fully Open Access journals are listed in the Directory of Open
Access Journals (DOAJ, doaj.org).
Brill and OAPEN
Brill believes in sustainable models that enhance the quality and dissemination of academic content.
For this reason Brill is participating in the OAPEN pilot study into the effects of Open Access on books
in the Humanities and Social Sciences. For more information on this pilot see: oapen.org.

Brill Open Articles

Brill Open is available for all journals published under Brill and its imprints. Upon receipt of the Article Publication
Charge, your paper will be made freely available on Brills Online Books and Journals under a CC-BY or CC-BY-NC
license. Income derived from Article Publication Charges (APCs) will be reflected in the development of the level of
journal subscription prices.

Brills Developing Countries Program

Brill is an international academic publishing company that operates globally to disseminate its academic
content as widely as possible. We are a key partner of academic institutions and our authors and editors come
from all parts of the world. We believe that operating on a global scale requires that we also give something
back to the academic community, particularly in developing countries. Brill, therefore, seeks to contribute
to sustainable development in the following ways:
- Brill participates in existing Developing Countries Programs
Research4Life (Including HINARI, AGORA, OARE, ARDI)
INASP
Association of Common Wealth Universities
Publishers for Development
- Brills Adopt a Library Program
- Brill recommends Author Aid for Authors in Developing Countries

Research4Life
Research4Life is the collective name for four public private partnerships that
seek to help achieve the UNs Millennium Development Goals. These programs
have given people at more than 6000 institutions in over 100 countries and
territories in the developing world free or low cost access to more than 35,000
peer-reviewed international scientific journals, books and databases provided
by the worlds leading academic and professional publishers.
INASP
Brill offers its journal content through INASP, an international development
charity working with a global network of partners to improve access, production
and use of research information and knowledge, so that countries are equipped
to solve their development challenges.
Association of Commonwealth Universities
Through the Low Cost Journals Scheme members of the Association of
Commonwealth Universities (ACU) in developing countries have access
to Brill print journals at deep-discount prices.
Publishers for Development
Brill supports Publishers for Development, a forum for information and
discussion around the importance of access to information for development.
Brills Adopt a Library Program
Brills Adopt a Library program each year donates a collection of books to one
or two libraries primarily in developing countries. Libraries actively approach
Brill or are recommended by Brill authors and editors. In the choice of libraries
Brill seeks to match the collection with the focus of the library or the university
they are part of. For more information, please visit brill.com/brills-adopt-libraryprogram
Brill recommends Author Aid for Authors in Developing Countries
AuthorAID is a global online network that provides support, mentoring,
resources, and training for researchers in developing countries. Academics
in developing countries that would like to receive coaching in their research
or academic writing for publication are encouraged to sign up with the Author
Aid network. Brill authors/editors also have the option to coach or mentor
a colleague in a developing country towards publication.
