HAVE IT YOUR WAY?

You may remember sometime back a commercial that Burger King

ran. With a memorable jingle, they touted, Have it your way, at Burger
King. And yet we are no different when it comes to how we want to
serve the Lord. We want to have it our way, or else.
In the Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke, we are told the story of
the rich young ruler. He came to Jesus, asking only one question:
What good thing shall I do that I can inherit eternal life? Its an
understandable question, one Im sure weve all asked at one time or
another. But its also a loaded question.
Jesus responded first with why do you call me good? There is no
one that is good but One, and that is God. For this young man there
had to be an understanding that Jesus was more than a rabbi, but He
was in fact, the Son of God. Who is Jesus to you?
Secondly, Jesus shares with him the need to keep Gods
commandments. When he asked, Which ones? it was obvious that he
thought he could ignore some while keeping others. We all need to
understand that they all must be kept, not just some. Jesus responded
with the last six commandments from Mt. Sinai. The young man
declared that he had kept them all since he was a child, but What do I
still lack?
Jesus told him that if he wanted to be perfect, he only lacked one
thing. Just one thing. Only one thing. His one thing had three parts to it:
sell what you have (his possessions), give the proceeds to the poor
(not all of his wealth), and follow Jesus. Seems fairly simple and easy
to do, but not for him. He went away sorrowful because he had great
possessions. A better way of understanding was that he loved his
possessions more than he wanted to have eternal life.
How about you? Is there just one thing keeping you from being
perfect? Just one thing youre lacking. Just one thing keeping you from
having joy unspeakable and full of glory? Or would you rather have it
your way?
Blessings, Pastor and Sister Nolan

Pastor Jonathons Word of The Week

We probably never give it a thought but when you
consider seriously the nursery rhymes taught to
children, one might discover a bit of wisdom.
Recall this old rhyme written by an Englishmen?
There was a crooked man, and he went a crooked
mile. He found a crooked sixpence against a crooked
stile; He bought a crooked cat, which caught a crooked
mouse, and they all lived together in a little crooked
house.
What is the moral of the rhyme? Is it not that if one
starts out crooked, everything becomes crooked? Life
never seems to get straightened out. The rhyme does
not have the crooked man living happily ever afterward.
That is why the Bible offers great wisdom regarding
helping children to get started right. It says, Train
children in the right way, and when old, they will not
stray (Proverbs 22: 6). One might add that if they do,
theyll have to deal with an uneasy conscience.
