3. Seriously, wheres the beef? Seven- to 10-year-olds, or mini-adults, as I like to call them,
are ready to braise, boil, and steam with adult supervision. If your kid idolizes Emeril more
than High School Musical, buy some wonton skins (pack of 100 for $2) and make your own
dim sum. Chop the vegetables, mix the ingredients, add the beef, stir fry everything together,
and then fill, fold, and steam the wontons. This is a project you can do many times differently
by adding different ingredients and changing the final cooking technique from steaming to
baking or flash frying.
4. Snack Attack. Children need to eat often, before blood sugars get low and frustration gets
high. While we usually think about well-balanced meals, snacks count too. Everyone loves
Pirate Booty, but when and if you ever have some downtime, here is an easy and healthy snack
idea. Make your own ice popssqueeze lemons and oranges with water into ice cube trays and
add Popsicle sticks. Or make your own muffins. Follow a recipe but substitute the white sugar
with apple sauce or bananas to cut down on sugar and keep up the taste. Both are fun, fast
activities you can do with the kids and enjoy for days after the food is made.
5. I dont want to try it, and I dont like it. Parents of picky eaterswe understand the
frustration and jubilation when your picky eater so much as licks a vegetable. I hate to say it,
but the only way youre getting mini-me to chow down on some broccoli rabe is by weaving
those leaves into the meal rather than placing them on the side to be stared down. Its true, and
it worksgiving new foods silly names, making it into a game, and sneaking in the good stuff
can go a long way to a healthier, more balanced, diet.
In the end, its not how good it tastes thats most important. Its the time together,
conversations, and healthy eating habits learned that break the myth that food comes from the
delivery man.
