Subject : Physics

Subject Matter: Conductors of Electricity

Objective

At the end of
one hour
discussion ,
the students
are expected
to:
1. Define
what is
conductor
of
electricity.
2. Describe
how
electricity
flows in a
conductor.
3. Use
fruit/vegeta

other
household
materials
to

Engage

Show them a
calculator
with battery
attached in it.
Ask them
what will
happen if you
will remove
the battery.
Ask them
again if what
did the
battery do to
turn on the
calculator?
Do you know
that battery is
a conductor of
electricity?
Relate this to
the topic.

Batteries as conductors have three parts. A cathode (positive
production
conductor), and anode (negative
of light of
conductor), and an electrolyte (materials that carry an electric
LED?
2.
2. What
charge). When making a fruit battery, the juiciness of the fruit or
will
vegetable is the electrolyte, and the two metals inserted into the
happen if
fruit are the electrodes. Which is the cathode and which is the
one
anode depends on what pair of materials you are using. In this
conductor
case, we have copper as the cathode and galvanized umbrella
is not
nail as the anode. Each fruit/vegetable has approximately 0.9
present in
Volt capacities. Calculator requires 1.5 Volts source to conduct
the circuit
electricity while the LED needs 3 Volts to light up.

Procedure :
1. Using a given tray with lists of materials needed, assign
one member to pick the materials on the table.
2. Lay down the fruit/vegetable that you picked
3. For the group assigned in oranges and apples, gently
squeeze the fruits by rolling it gently on the table.
4. Insert a galvanized umbrella nail on one side of the
fruit/vegetable and a copper wire on the other side. Make
sure that the two metals will not touch each other. Do the
same procedure to all 4 fruits/vegetables.
5. Connect the 2 set up fruit/vegetable using one pair of
alligator clips placing one red clip on the copper wire of the
first fruit/vegetable and the black clip on the galvanized
nail of the second fruit/vegetable. For the group with LED
device, add another 2 set up fruit/vegetable and do the
same procedure.
6. Get 2 pairs of alligator clips, one all black pair and one all
red pair. Place the black clip of one pair on the galvanized
nail of the first fruit/vegetable. Then using the red pair,
connect the one clip on the copper wire of the second
fruit/vegetable.
7. Get the device assigned to you, and then connect the red
clip on the positive terminal of the device and the other
black clip on the negative terminal to complete the circuit.
8. For calculator, ON the device to determine the conduction
of electricity and for the LED, check if it lights up.

1. Based on your activity, what are the materials responsible for

the lighting of the LED and in turning ON the calculator?
2. Illustrate and describe the path of electricity of the lighted LED
or the turned on calculator. Note that electricity flows from the
negative to positive terminal.
3.
If those materials you illustrated in number 2 are
conductors, what is conductor?

Guide Questions:
1. What is the role of the fruits/vegetables, copper wire,
galvanized nail in the production of light?

the circuit during the activity?
