Key Considerations on NETBACKUP 7 Upgrade

1. Before starting upgrading to NetBackup 7, it is strongly advised to take an

Online Hot Catalog backup of the existing Netbackup 6.x or 6.5.x configuration
that can be used to fall back on in case the upgrade fails and can't be re-run.
2. Please refer to "DOCUMENTATION: What are the steps needed to back out of a
failed Veritas NetBackup (tm) 7.0 installation" for Unix
http://support.veritas.com/docs/337043 and for Windows http://support.veritas.com/docs/337042
3. Important information for customers upgrading to NetBackup 7.0 from
NetBackup 5.x. Whilst it is possible to upgrade to NetBackup 7.0 directly from
any NetBackup 6.x environment, it is not possible to upgrade directly from
NetBackup 5.x. The required upgrade path from 5.x is to first upgrade the entire
NetBackup environment (Master, Media servers and all clients) to NetBackup
6.5GA.
4. For detailed instructions on upgrading from 5.x to 6.5 please refer to "Veritas
NetBackup (tm) 5.x to 6.5 Upgrade Guide" http://support.veritas.com/docs/290141
5. The install script will after having installed updated Sybase 11 binaries and
before upgrading the existing Sybase 9 Database and database schema, make
a backup copy of the database and place this in the staging directory. This
backup copy will remain in the staging directory until the first Hot Online Catalog
backup is successfully run of the new NetBackup 7 installation. This backup
copy can be used to fall back on should a failure occur at any point during the
database upgrade.
6. Please refer to "NetBackup 7 Upgrade Advisory: How to troubleshoot and repair
a broken/failed database upgrade" http://support.veritas.com/docs/340352
7. Cold Catalog backup is not supported in NetBackup 7 and future NetBackup
releases. It is therefore very important that if a Hot Online Catalog backup has
not been configured, one should be configured as soon as the upgrade has
finished. Please refer to "All Image cleanup jobs complete with status 1"
http://support.veritas.com/docs/337473

8. Symantec recommends that the consistency of the NetBackup EMM and BMR
databases is validated and verified prior to performing the upgrade to
NetBackup 7.0. Although the database upgrade script runs a validation, if any
inconsistencies exist prior to performing the upgrade these will likely cause the
upgrade to fail.
9. Please refer to "How to perform a consistency check of the NetBackup EMM
and BMR Databases using the CLI or the NB DB Admin Utility"
http://support.veritas.com/docs/340464

10. With NetBackup 7.0, all Unix/Linux 32-bit support has been discontinued. To
upgrade these systems to NetBackup 7.0, you must first migrate your current
NetBackup 6.x catalog and
11. database to a 64-bit system with a supported platform. 32-bit Media servers that
runs NetBackup 6.x are compatible with 64-bit Master servers that run
NetBackup 7.0.
12. Please refer to "Using catalog backup and recovery to transfer NetBackup
catalogs between UNIX or Linux master servers as part of a hardware refresh"
http://support.veritas.com/docs/337970
