CHILDREN.

1.1

INTRODUCTION:-

Physically challenged childrens consists of lack of competent physical faculties, the absence
of legal capability to perform an act. The term signifies incapacity to exercise all the legal
rights ordinarily possessed by an average person.
Physically challenged condition:1. A condition which prevents one from performing all usual physical functions. This
usually means a permanent state or sometimes temporary.
2. A legal impediment including being a minor who cannot make a contract, or being
insane or incompetent as determined by others.
In recent times society and the law have dictated that people with physically challenged
should be accommodated and encouraged to operate to their maximum potential and have the
right to participate in societal and governmental activity without impediments.
The physically challenged child is posing a great problem to the world. It is calculated that by
the year 2020 be more than 700 million disabled people belonging to developing countries.
Recognizing this, global problem, Assembly of United Nations had declared 1981 the
International year of physically challenged persons with the keynote theme FULL
PARTICIPATION AND EQUALITY.
Every citizen should be aware of the sad plight of these children. Much can be done as
regards, presentation, protection, immunization etc. Immunization camps can be organized,
parents should be made aware that inadequate nutrition may cause disability and the
involvement of general public in the remedial work and rehabilitations can help to do fruitful
work in this field. It is a great thing to bring some tight to their dark world. Thus it is
important to study the parental attitude towards physically challenged children.

1.2 NEED & SIGNIFICANCE OF STUDY:-

3.
4.
5.

Helping in a psychological adjustment to their surroundings.

To provide proper training and assistance to get jobs.

Promoting effective measures for prevention of disability.

1.3

STATEMENT IN AIM:-

A STUDY OF PARENTAL ATTITUDE TOWARDS PHYSICALLY CHALLENGED

CHILDREN.

1.4 TITLE:A study of parental attitude towards physically challenged children.

1.5

OPERATIONAL DEFINITIONS:-

1. PARENT:- A parent is a caretaker of the offspring in their own species. In human a

parent is of a child (where child refers to offspring, not necessarily age). A biological parent
consists of a person whose gamete resulted in a child, a male through the sperm and a female
through the ovum.

2. CHILDREN:- A person between birth and full growth, a boy or girl.

3. PARENTAL ATTITUDE:- Parental involvement or behavior of parents towards
certain thing.

4. PHYSICALLY CHALLENGE:- Actual incapacity to perform tasks within the course

with resulting loss, in addition to physical impairment that might or might not be
incapacitating.

1.6 OBJECTIVES OF STUDY:9

A STUDY OF PARENTAL ATTITUDE TOWARDS PHYSICALLY CHALLENGED

CHILDREN.

1.
2.
3.
4.
5.

To study parental attitude towards physically disabled students.

To study mothers attitude towards physically challenged childrens.
To study Fathers attitude towards physically challenged childrens.
Parental attitude towards physically disabled children.
To find out reasons for such attitude of parents towards physically challenged

children.
6. To prepare a suggestive plan to improve attitude of parents towards physically
challenged childrens.

1.7 HYPOTHESIS OF THE STUDY:1. Hypothesis is the prior assumption made for the sake of argument.
2. In this study we have followed null hypothesis.

1.8 DELIMITATION OF THE STUDY:1. Data is collected from only 30 parents.

2. Only Parents and Students are included in the study

CHAPTER 2
RESEARCH DESIGN

A STUDY OF PARENTAL ATTITUDE TOWARDS PHYSICALLY CHALLENGED

CHILDREN.

2.1 INTRODUCTION.
2.2 METHODOLOGY.
2.3 SAMPLE SIZE.
2.4 TOOLS OF
RESEARCH.
2.5 STATISTICAL TEST.

2.1 INTRODUCTION:Research design is a plan of what data to gather, from where and when to collect the data and
how to analyze the data obtained. It tracks the record of each and every step in research. It
refers to the method or technique through which an investigation achieves the goal. Research
design has two basic purposes:

To provide answers to research questions.

To control the valiance.
11

A STUDY OF PARENTAL ATTITUDE TOWARDS PHYSICALLY CHALLENGED

CHILDREN.

2.2 METHODOLOGY OF STUDY:Methodology of the study refers to the techniques, which is adopted by the investigator in
order to achieve the goal. The methodology is an essential part of the research. The
methodology of the study depends upon the aims.
Method adopted for present study is survey method.

Survey method:The survey method gathers data from relatively large numbers of cases at a particular time.
The survey is an important type of study. It must not be confused with merely clinical routine
of gathering and tabulating figures. It clearly defines problem and objectives. It requires
expert imaginations, planning, careful analysis and interpretation of data together. Each
statement of survey method is oriented towards necessary information for the particular
study.
For the present study, data were obtained by means of questionnaires which use three-point
scales with the following options:
Agree, disagree & neutral.

2.3 SAMPLE SIZE:Sampling is a process or technique of selecting a representative part of a population for the
purpose of determining parameters or characteristics of the whole population.
For the purpose of study, simple random sampling technique was used.

Simple random sampling:It is the one in which all the elements of the populations has the equal independent chance of
being included in the sample. Thus a sample selected by randomization method is known as
simple random sampling.
12

A STUDY OF PARENTAL ATTITUDE TOWARDS PHYSICALLY CHALLENGED

CHILDREN.

Selection of sample:For the study 40 parents were selected as samples.

The parents of physically challenged students of Holy cross convent school, thane were
selected.

2.4 TOOLS OF RESEARCH:The research tool used for the present study is questionnaire.
The form contained 35 questions for father and 35 for mother which were to be answered by
ticking the one of the options available (agree, disagree, neutral).

Questionnaire:A questionnaire is a set of questions for obtaining statistically useful or personal information
from individual.

2.5 STATISTICAL TEST:The statistical test used in this project was simplest form of organizing data, it aids
understanding and help the researcher to see the similarities and relationship of his data.
Equally , converting data to percentage responses enables the researcher to compare sub
group of unequal size meaningfully and in this research the raw figures were converted to
percentages. The responses were analyzed according to their relevance to the research
questions.
Percentages and pie charts were used as statistical test.

ANALYSIS AND
INTERPRETATION

3.1 INTRODUCTION.
14

A STUDY OF PARENTAL ATTITUDE TOWARDS PHYSICALLY CHALLENGED

CHILDREN.

3.2 ANALYSIS AND

INTERPRETATION.
3.3 SUMMARY.

3.1 INTRODUCTION: Analysis:Analysis of data refers to breaking all factors of a tabulated material in a simpler parts
and putting these parts together in a new well defined arrangement in order to
determine inherent facts or meaning.

Interpretation:Interpretation forms the last step. The data gathered are to be summarized, analyzed
and subjected to statistical treatment in order to interpret the findings.
The process of interpretation is as important as the collection and analysis of data.
Beside the ability to clear and critical thinking is also required.
Thus it can be termed that analysis and interpretation are two sides of the same coin.
15

A STUDY OF PARENTAL ATTITUDE TOWARDS PHYSICALLY CHALLENGED

CHILDREN.

The following pages show the analysis and interpretation of response from the
respondents.
Percentages and pie charts were used to analyze and interpret data.
