Introduction
To become a manager organizational and personal skills are most important. Organizational
skills are required for day to day business services and personal skills are relevant for building
relationship with the stakeholders for positive feedback from them. Hospitality is a service
oriented business where the activities of a manager are quite different. Instead of production
quality here service quality is important where managing human resource is very much important
because service is rendering by them. A manager has to carry out day to day operations, reporting
higher authority, motivating subordinates and get work done from them are the regular tasks of
the manager. Considering crucial economic condition the manager should be focused on
providing effective customer service, setting goals and targets, monitoring and controlling team
performance, prepare budget and communicate it with authority, maintaining shareholders wealth
and company reputations are the part of managerial activities.

Task -1
1.1 Different styles of management
Management style is one of the major key components to achieve organizational effectiveness.
Management style simply describes how to manage all the activities of an organization. Here a
manager is dealing with people and exercise his power and authority on subordinates for the
purpose of achieving organizational goals. A good leader with suitable management style can
motivate workers towards achieving organizational goals.
Several management styles have been used to direct subordinates and to report higher authority.
In recent times common forms of management styles are

Authoritarian management style

Coercive management
Democratic management
Affiliative management
Permissive
Indifferent

Coaching,
Pacesetting,
Visionary,
Bureaucratic and defensive styles of management (Effere, 2005).

In authoritarian management style manager has all power and to make policies and take major
decisions where he doesnt take any suggestions from his subordinates. This type of leadership
also referred as autocratic management style. In this modern time this types of management style
is valueless. Here the leader has the full control over the activities and just order where he
doesnt feel to consider any reasonable fact that is useful to make decisions from lower level
managers. Here subordinates are not motivated and dont put their best to achieve organizational
productivity. Coercive manager is very much aggressive, he demands immediate implementation
of his/her order. This type of management style is effective where the company is in crisis and
need to immediate recover from losses. In a democratic management system all the decisions are
made by consulting with subordinates and decisions are become fruitful just because of huge
head are engaged in decision making and as a result employees are motivated and do their best
for attaining organizational goals. In coaching style management is very much helpful to develop
personal skill and their job related activities. In affiliative management system team work is
encouraged this system is popular where there is a lack of inter relationship among employees. In
bureaucratic management decisions are taken in lengthy process, most of the government offices
use this management style which is now quite unpopular (Davidmann, 1995).
Theory X and theory Y can be analyzed in terms of analyzing what types of directions are going
to be provided. According to theory X if employees are very much lazy and not committed to
work autocratic management style is preferred. Here workers are closely supervised thats why
chances of wrongdoings are minimized and workers flexibility is compromised. On the contrary
in accordance with theory Y worker are highly dedicated to their profession and eager to
complete their tasks in due time , in this circumstances employees are free from bindings and
enjoyed full independence. Another combined approach is developed by McGregor theory XY in
which circumstances describes where X and Y are applicable (Wikipedia, 2015).

1.2 Leadership characteristics

In the service sector like hospitality management it is most important to place a person who bears
good characters as a manager. A leader has to be competent in taking risks and other crucial
decisions. Important characters of a good leader are given below

1.4 Organizational culture in hospitality management service

Organizational culture is a set of assumptions, values, and beliefs, which governs how people
behave in organizations. It specifies the duties of how to perform specific tasks, dress code,
behave etc. Every organization has its own unique culture systems. As in hospitality workers
serve customers directly so developing a good culture is a must. Some ways are
Training and hiring
Foster commitment
Develop a story

Training and hiring: In service sector culture is more related with people not only for some
rules developed by top management confined in files. To develop a good culture we need to first
identify the mission and vision of the organization. Another important aspect is to hire those
people who are committed to follow established culture. An efficient manager has the quality to
retain and motivate workers by a flexible unique culture system.
Foster commitment: After hiring employees who are interested in following remaining culture
it is manager duty to get stronger commitment from them. For this skill development activity
such as training, conference, symposium, seminars can be arranged. Staff should feel the culture
you talk about if they're going to remain enthusiastic.
Develop a story: It all about company biography. For this a manager need to develop a story
about the firm as a result employee feels that they are the part of the great journey of the firm and
side by side other stakeholders can also be known to the journey of the firm. Here inclusion firs
place of the firm, products, personnel, major customers, past history and future goals are
mentioned (organizational culture, 2015 Small Business - Chron.com).

Task -2
2.1 Management skills
It is very much difficult to manage human resource. For hospitality like service it is very much
crucial. Some people may not be adapted with the management decisions. Skills adopted by a
manager can help to solve this problem. Some important skills that a good manager possesses are

An efficient manager has more specific skills that are most important to understand. These are
Technical skills: are the ability of manager to use specific methods and techniques in doing the
managerial work. These skills are related to technology, such as skills of engineer. Technical
skills of managers represent the usage of methods like break even analysis in planning or ability
to prepare for and conduct a structured interview.
Interpersonal skills: people are most valuable resource of any enterprise and manager needs to
know how to lead people. Abilities include motivation of workers, solving work conflicts,
communication and working with people. Therefore interpersonal skills are essential on every
level of management.
Conceptual skills: these skills are must for middle or top manager. This is the ability to to see
the whole picture. See the organization as one whole intertwined with the surrounding
environment with the relevant priorities and important issues.
Communication skills: manager needs information for decision making. Ability to disseminate
and receive information is thus important tools for manager. It is not only verbal communication,
but the manager should be able to distinguish non verbal signals, mood and feelings to filter the

2.2 Ways of enhancing personal value system

Values are important for managers it helps to get a stronger position among subordinates. Value
systems differentiate a person from others that makes him special. Value system is all about
personal beliefs, attitudes, behavior, and last of all skills. All the combination makes a manager
competent in his her workplace. Value system doesnt develop within a shortest time, it takes
longer time to build where a lot of dedication works behind this. Values and beliefs develop our
attitude and guide our behavior. But it is important that the component of value systems can be
changed by the influence of environment. For managers it is difficult to find out core values until
a strong relationship is built with others. If values are identified it is very much easy to rank them

from much to less important. Value enhancing includes identifying mission, vision, goals and
objectives. Several stakeholders like customers, shareholders, are very much eager to know the
managers as well as company value system.

2.3 Objectives and target to develop own potential

As a manager of hospitality service main focused is on improving communication and
interpersonal skills in this sector. Several techniques can be followed to ensure a positive and
assertive result to increase the chance of potentiality in managerial profession. For this learning
is a must, there is no end of learning; it makes a man perfect in all aspects of life. Personality is
one of the main factors which describe the behavior that discloses what type of human we are.
For developing personality need to focus on greater awareness, setting personal goals, acquiring
new skills and knowledge is a must. Side by side a manager needs to emphasize on his own
strength and weakness point and take intensive care of it; improving self confidence. A common
term is used for achieving targeted goal is to become SMART that means the person should be
specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time bound in terms of setting target.

3.1 Lead a team to achieve an agreed goal and objectives

A manager success depends on how he motivates and leads his subordinates. Leadership doesnt
mean only ordering people to do work but also recognizing their abilities and rewarding for their
hard work, dedication and risk bearing activities. Motivation is a responsibility of management
and related to organizations productivity and team effectiveness. There are some keys to lead and
motivate people. These are
Find out what motivation is required by people: the best way to find out peoples
motivation need is to ask them directly. Another approach is analyzing the Maslows need of

hierarchy which includes physiological need, security, esteem need, social need, and self
actualization need. Based on employees performance rating motivational expenditures can be
taken by managers.
Hire and retain people who are good at work: as the economy passes through hard times it
is very much important to keep only useful talent manpower and sweep out unproductive
workers although it is a tough process.
Get people working on whats important: of course employees tasks are targeted to the
organizational goals, they should be aware of that achieving target is their first and foremost
priority. Managers should work with them to figure out how they spend their time.
Explain and train the employees about their duties and responsibilities.
After providing guidelines and training let the worker to do their job in their own

independence.
Praising and recognizing their activities
Caring and showing attitude towards that
Respect all level of employee
Lead people as a leader, no autocratic decision should be taken. Have fun with them, make a
working environment that helps to maintain work life balance (Mark Lett (2012).

3.2 Managerial decision made to support achievement of agreed goal or

objective and recommendations for improvement
A manager has to work different departments of the organization from recruiting to controlling
activities. To work with people managers found many inconsistencies of activities that are simply
waste of organizational resource so that they can eliminate those tasks from their activities and
turn the free time and resources into productive activities. Employees should be monitored
properly that all their efforts are directed to the organizational objectives. Errors are to find out
and corrective actions are taken thats why further problems will not be seen. Training and
practical work experience can be given to improve skills. In hospitality service customer
feedback can be the standard of appraising the performance of the employee. Based on results
from customers and suggestion from the employee rules and procedures can be modified.

Sometimes expert opinion can be taken in terms of improving managerial decision making
(Dessler, 2011).
