Unit10

Communication
Chat show

Use this activity after Lesson 10.1 on page 117.

New language: chat show, host, guest
Procedure
Preteach the new language.
Introduce the context by asking sts what chat shows
they watch, and what sort of guests appear on the
shows. Who have they seen interviewed? What did the
guests talk about? Sts work in pairs. Give each student
a copy of the worksheet. Sts take turns interviewing
one another in the roles of chat show host and chat
show guest, following the list of questions, and the
examples. Encourage them to discuss the questions
and answers in as much detail as they can. They
can make up answers rather than answer about
themselves if they prefer
Unit10

The second student then takes the next card from the
pile, repeats what the rst student said, for example,
Pierre went to Las Vegas and won a lot of money, and
adds his/her own statement, after which the other
group members ask for the reason. Each student in
turn repeats the previous students story before
adding his or her own. Continue until all the cards have
been used.

Question and answer dominoes

Grammar 1
Quiz

Use this activity after Communication on page 122.

Use this activity after Lesson 10.2 on page 119.

New language: good enough, tired, angry

New language: die, When did die?

Procedure

Procedure

Preteach the new language.

Preteach the new language.

Sts work in groups of three or four. Give each group

a set of dominoes and a list of verbs. Explain that
their cards contain pairs of sentences A and B. The B
sentences answer the questions in the A sentences.
Give them an example to illustrate this: A: Why didnt
you get the job in England? B: Because my English
wasnt good enough.

Explain to sts that they are going to take part in a

quiz. Divide sts into groups of four and subdivide each
group into two pairs. Give one pair the worksheet for
team A and the other pair the worksheet for team B.
Ask each pair to complete the questions on their
worksheet. Monitor and correct as necessary.
Give team A a copy of team Bs answers and vice
versa. Pair A asks its questions to pair B who have to
agree on the answer. Explain that they must give a full
sentence answer and use the past tense of the verb
correctly. If they give the correct answer and make no
grammatical mistakes, they get two points. If they give
the correct answer but make a grammatical mistake,
they get 1 point. Provide an example: When did Monet
paint the Folies Bergre? a in 1882 b in 1850 c in
1870 Answer: He painted it/the Folies Bergre in
1882. (2 points) He paint it in 1882. (1 point )
Then team B asks its questions to team A in the same
way. The team that gets the most points wins the quiz.
Unit10

Grammar 2
Im going to have a holiday.

Use this activity after Lesson 10.3 on page 121.

Procedure
Sts work in groups of three or four. Give each group a

130

set of cards, which they should place face down. One

student begins by taking a card, looking at the words,
and making a sentence, speaking either about the
past or about the future, as indicated on the card, for
example, Im going to go to Las Vegas or I went to Las
Vegas. The other sts then ask Then what are you going
to do? for a future statement or Then what did you
do? for a past statement. The student with the card
must give a plausible answer, for example, Im going
to win a lot of money or I won a lot of money.

Pearson Education Limited 2007, Living English A1

The aim of the activity is for sts to join all the cards
together. To help them, the rst card is marked Start
and the last card is marked Finish. Explain that they
must add the past form of verbs from the list to the B
sentences.
The rst group to join all the sentences together and
complete the B sentences with the right verb in its past
form wins.
