Misorientation Angle
Low angle grain boundaries (LAGBs) or
subgrain boundaries are those with a
misorientation less than about 15 degrees.
Generally speaking they are composed of an
array of dislocations and their properties and
structure are a function of the misorientation. In
contrast the properties of high angle grain
boundaries (HAGBs), whose misorientation is
greater than about 11 degrees (the transition
angle varies from 1015 degrees depending on
the material), are normally found to be
independent of the misorientation. However,
there are 'special boundaries' at particular
orientations whose interfacial energies are
notably lower than those of general HAGBs

Dislocation Motion

Dislocation Climb
Dislocations can slip in planes containing both
the dislocation and the Burgers Vector. For a
screw dislocation, the dislocation and the
Burgers vector are parallel, so the dislocation
may slip in any plane containing the
dislocation. For an edge dislocation, the
dislocation and the Burgers vector are
perpendicular, so there is only one plane in
which the dislocation can slip. There is an
alternative mechanism of dislocation motion,
fundamentally different from slip, that allows an
edge dislocation to move out of its slip plane,
known as dislocation climb. Dislocation climb
allows an edge dislocation to move
perpendicular to its slip plane.

Screw Dislocation
Screw dislocation, exists, which may be
thought of as being formed by a shear
stress that is applied to produce the
distortion
The upper front region of the crystal is
shifted one atomic distance to the right
relative to the bottom portion. The atomic
distortion associated with a screw
dislocation is also linear and along a
dislocation line, The screw dislocation
derives its name from the spiral or helical
path or ramp that is traced around the
dislocation line by the atomic planes of
atoms.

Mixed Dislocation
Most dislocations found in crystalline
materials are probably neither pure edge
nor pure screw, but exhibit components
of both types; these are termed mixed
dislocations.
All three dislocation types are
represented schematically in the Figure
the lattice distortion that is produced
away from the two faces is mixed, having
varying degrees of screw and edge
character.

Subjective Question
Aluminum foil used to package food is approximately 0.00254 cm thick.
Assume that all of the unit cells of the aluminum are arranged so that ao is
perpendicular to the foil surface. For a 10.16 cm. x 10.16 cm. square of the foil,
determine the total number of unit cells in the foil ?
Ans : 3.956 x 10^ 21 cells
