Measurement/Logging-While-Drilling

Sperry M/LWD Tools

Perform in Environment
Exceeding 30,000 psi
Location: Gulf of Mexico

OPERATORS CHALLENGE In this deepwater Gulf

of Mexico well, preliminary planning indicated that vigilant
monitoring of a long salt run and 30,000 psi equipment at well total
depth would be required. Sperry Drilling services was challenged
to provide measurement- and logging-while-drilling (M/LWD)
tools capable of operating in the estimated 30,000 psi or higher
pressure environment, drilling a 10,000 foot (3,048 meter) or
longer salt section with a 16 -inch bit while mitigating vibration
without sacrificing rate of penetration. The application also
would prove the theoretical pressure limit of the M/LWD tools
prior to a 40,000 psi pressure chamber being put in place.
HALLIBURTONS SOLUTION Sperry deployed the
M5 integrated LWD service, directional probe and negative
pulser. The M5 service provides formation evaluation answers
from resistivity and azimuthal gamma ray sensors as well as
drilling optimization answers from vibration and pressure
sensors. These fully digital sensors are bundled together in one
short, integrated collar, reducing the number of connections
and yielding a significantly more reliable design. The service
includes the third generation Sperry EWR-M5 resistivity sensor.

With pre-run and real-time data

communicated to the field staff, Sperry
drilled the long salt section efficiently and
achieved all objectives, with ROP for the
hole section averaging between 80 feet
(24 meters) and 100 feet (30 meters) per
hour. In the final hole section, the M/LWD
tools were exposed to internal pressure of
32,433 psi at a depth of 35,055 feet (10,685 meters)
measured depth and were still able to provide
real-time surveying and logging data.

pre-planning and rigorous monitoring
between field and ADT service personnel
resulted in the successful, long salt run which was executed as
planned without issues or concerns, and ROP was maintained
without inducing unnecessary vibrations. As per plan, nearly 60
percent of the 16,887-foot (5,147-meter) salt body was drilled
in a single run with minimal vibration and ROP of 80 feet (24
meters) and 100 feet (30 meters) per hour. Based on success of
Sperrys M/LWD tools, the operator was able to drill and evaluate
a record well within all government regulatory requirements.

Sperrys ADT drilling optimization services team used all

pre-planning data and incorporated it into MaxBHA modeling
software. From MaxBHA modeling data, predetermined
critical rates of penetration (ROP) and weight-on-bit (WOB)
parameters were identified along with torque and drag analysis.
The pre-planning models were updated as the well progressed
and all parameters were monitored real time.

Sperry also incorporated M/LWD engineers

and office Remote Operating Center
personnel to successfully mitigate vibration,
and monitor development of 30,000 psi
equipment with Houston Research and
Development as well as Lafayette Drilling
Equipment Maintenance teams.
