Structure QS 15:

As the agent of socialization, a teacher is responsible in creating


individuals who are capable of socializing outside the classroom and
generations who can comply with the global development dynamically.

a) Define agent of socialization in the context of education with one example.


Agents of socialization are the individuals, groups and institutions that create the
social context in which socialization takes place. It is through agents of socialization
that individuals learn and incorporate the values and norms of their culture as well as
their various positions in the social structure in such terms as class, race and gender.
E.g. Teachers. By teaching and modelling socialization to children, children will learn
the meaning of kindness and generosity. They will then be able to eventually go out
into society and contribute in a positive, meaningful and productive way. Teachers, in
a sense are a childs provider outside of the childs home.
b) List 3 teachers role as the agent of socialization.
- To be involved in community activities organized by the communities
- To model good moral values such as courtesy, good manners, affectionate and
humanitarian values
- To learn and adapt to new technologies in communication to access information
more quickly and efficiently

Essay:

Teachers responsibility and accountability is closely related to the teaching


profession. Elaborate the aspects of accountability as a teacher.

There are 5 aspects of accountability as a teacher:


a) Accountability towards student
-Teachers educate students to a level of excellence in academic achievement as well
as their potential to produce students who are balance and harmonious intellectually,
spiritually, emotionally, socially and physically.
Besides that, teachers are also accountable for shaping the personality of students
through teaching. Thus, the responsibilities of teachers are to educate the students to
a high moral level and to be good and useful students.
Furthermore, teachers need to develop a range of skills in order to accelerate
students learning. And lastly, teachers need to create a conducive and safe
classroom environment for the students.
b) Accountability towards oneself

Teachers should be knowledgeable and competent in the subject area being


taught. Effective teachers will constantly update themselves on new
developments. Therefore, he will continue to explore and discover new
knowledge and pedagogical content knowledge in the field.
Teachers should be able to deliver information effectively besides managing the
pupils well. Accountability to ourselves as teachers means being committed to
our tasks and having positive attitudes in performing our duties. And lastly,
teachers also act as a model to the students. As a model to the students, teacher
should always maintain good behaviours and present ourselves well as
professional teachers.

c) Accountability towards parents


-Teachers are entrusted by school administration and parents to perform the task to
ensure that their children be useful to the society and nation. As an educator,
teachers are accountable for the development and progress of the students in the
school. Besides, teachers should also establish a good relationship with parents to
support their children with whatever problems associated with their personality and
academic performance.
- Teachers also act as a model, counsellors and mentors to the children. Ability of
teachers to bear the responsibility would gain the trust of parents. Good relationships
between students, teachers and parents will create a close collaboration between
them which will be helpful in monitoring the progress and development of students.
d) Accountability towards community and country
- Teachers have the responsibility of fulfilling the country as Malaysians based on
the principles which are the National Principles. In the arena of education,
teachers are responsible and accountable to perform at their best in order to
achieve the ideals and aspirations of the National Philosophy of Education.
- In addition, teachers should be sensitive to the environment and communities
affected abstained from negative elements that may contaminate the good image
o the school and the community or country. Teachers should always be positive to
uphold the image of the teaching profession
- As a model, teachers need to develop attitudes and values in the students so as
to guide and nurture them to become loyal citizens, responsibility and respect for
people of different cultures races and religions. Teachers should adapt and adopt
an attitude of modesty while participating in social activities at school in order to
create harmony between the school and the community.

e) Accountability towards colleagues and the teaching profession


-

Teachers also need to establish good relationships with colleagues and cooperate with each other.
All teachers should respect the profession and always perform their duties well.
They should help new colleagues in the profession.
Teachers also need to master the latest knowledge, pedagogical content
knowledge and also pedagogical skills by reading, attending courses, intellectual
discussion and doing action research. Besides, teachers should make full use of

existing facilities in teacher activity centres, resource centres and local libraries to
enhance the quality of teaching and enhance teaching profession. Hence,
teachers could improve the quality of teaching and learning in schools.
