Action Research

Professional Development Project:

From Action to ASEAN

Preparation
a. Identifying the problem:
1. (reflect on student learning and teaching)Teaching speaking skills to
big classes of 35 45 students like mines has proven to be challenging,
especially during topic discussion sessions. Typically, after group-work,
students have to wait a long time for their groups presentation turn,
where they may not have a chance to talk as a group representative,
while listening quite passively to other groups. Theis fact increases a
students affection filter, lowers their motivation to participate while

the teacher finds it hard to observe students performance for future

improvement.
Being active listeners then being able to brief information to others are
significant parts of teamwork skills required in many ASEAN settings.
Unfortunately, most students in my classes lacks in such abilities.
2. The problem seems to be that this persons specking skills
classroom is not optimum for the purpose of improving speaking skills
among the students in attendance.
The could be more and clearer context of the situation making it clear
why things are so bad, but this will do as a personal AR project
proposal.
3. Collect information about the problem, talk to colleagues, look for
the main literature, etc.
4. What are some possible solutions; in collecting information about
the problem, surely people will suggest a number of things that might
be done about the situation.
5. Finally, select the solution that you want to work with I your
classroom.
c. Identifying potential solution:
After looking into the literature, I identified Jigsaw in Speaking as a
potential alternative technique. The theoretical foundation was
established on Cooperative
Learning Principles and on Jigsaw technique literature.
6. Here one needs to state the Research Question:
b. Preliminary Research Questions:
(1) How can I maximize students interaction time while enhancing
their motivation during class discussion sessions in big EFL classes?
(2) How can I help students improve their teamwork and presentation
skills to get ready for their work in the 21st century?
d. Revised research questions:
(1) How can Will classes using the Speaking Jigsaw technique
improve the speaking opportunities for students in speaking skills
classes? maximize students interaction time while enhancing their
motivation during class discussion sessions?

(2) How can Will the use of the Speaking Jigsaw technique in
speaking skills classes improve the speaking abilities of the students in
the class by the end of the semester? help students improve their
teamwork and presentation skills to get ready for their work in the 21
century ASEAN community?
st

Literature Review: here you might want to provide the actual

references for the literature review alluded to above when setting the
context.

PLAN:
As one creates the plan, pay attention to the details of what your changes in your
classroom would be; what is Speaking Jigsaw and how will it be incorporated into
your class? Will it just be your class and will you compare it with last semesters
class or will you compare it with another class you are teaching but not using the
Speaking Jigsaw?

3. Observe
Questionnaires given to students by the end of the semester, my own
observation as
a teacher together with interview with students were the two forms of
data collection I applied
As you might expect, this fails to meet my expectation of what I think
is needed concerning laying out the plans for collecting data. It needs
much more detail so you can be sure you have anticipated all of your
data needs and that you can begin to anticipated your analytical needs
as well. This tells you almost nothing about the information being
collected to respond to the research questions which means the author
could simply make up the answers as they see fit.

Results Reflection - Revise

They both start with R..it is that phase where if you are so inclined you share the
results with others and you revise your plans to improve things in the next
iteration.if at first you dont succeed, try, try again.
