1.1-1 General
The MINI X-TEL Software Workshop, which is a sub-set of the X-TEL Software
Workshop, is intended for the development of single PLC applications corresponding to a single project and a single station. It is fully integrated into the
Presentation Manager (PM) Graphic User Interface environment for OS/2 and supports
IBM Common User Access (CUA) standards for the operating environment.
The MINI X-TEL Software Workshop will run with OS/2 version 1.2, 1.3 or 2.1.
In this environment, MINI X-TEL ensures the functions of Program Integrator, Service
Generator and Application Manager.
It supports the development of an application for any of the following PLCs:
TSX 17-20, TSX 27/47 (PL7-2 language),
TSX V3, TSX V4, PMX V4 (PL7-3, PL7-3 GLT or PL7-3 GLD languages),
TSX V5, PMX V5 (PL7-3, PL7-3 GLT or PL7-3 GLD languages).
Ease of use
Access to the tools and functions is obtained from a single primary window,
MINI X-TEL proposes only those functions that are compatible with the type of PLC
selected,
Under MINI X-TEL, an optional software program (or tool) is accessible as soon as it
is installed. However, the user can inhibit the use of a function via a command
accessible from the menu bar,
MINI X-TEL can be started automatically as soon as the terminal is powered up, if the
latter is equipped with OS/2 1.3 or higher.

1.1-3 Service Generator
The MINI X-TEL Software Workshop makes available all the software tools and
programs that can be used, which are described in the manuals listed below. It creates
user-transparent links between the various software tools installed, and therefore
eliminates the need for repeated entries and avoids the risk of entry errors occurring. In
addition, it manages the symbol and program module libraries.
These software tools facilitate the development and maintenance of applications for the
entire TSX and PMX Series 7 range of PLCs.

1.1-4 Application Manager
The MINI X-TEL Software Workshop authorizes the development of single-PLC
applications only and allows only one application to be accessible at a time.
This makes it necessary to have dedicated fields on the hard disk for:
The creation and modification of the application (work space),
The storage of the application (storage space).
Internally, the operation of going from one application to another can be summed up as
copying the files from one space to the other
- Work space
The MINI X-TEL Software Workshop manages a single PLC application limited to a
single project and a single station. Because it is unique, this application is implicit
and constitutes the current application in the work space of the MINI X-TEL.
When MINI X-TEL is started, without any designation or choice of applications, all
active commands (starting of a program, function, etc.) take effect on this current
application as long as the user does not explicitly change the contents of the work
space of the MINI X-TEL.
Any reloading of the MINI X-TEL work space overwrites the current application,
which is therefore lost.
- Storage space
This space is used to store successive versions of the same application, or of
different applications, so that they can be restored in the work space as required.

PLC station terminology
A FUNCTION is all or part of the automation application of a station. It is also referred
to as a dedicated function.
Telemecanique modular PLCs are multifunction systems. Each function represents
a dedicated function of the automation system.
Each function is assigned one or more intelligent I/O modules and a program for use
in programming the function (including configuration, actual code programming,
set-up and documentation). This functional breakdown only applies to TSX and
PMX 47/67/87/107-40 V4 or V5 level PLCs:
Example:
Sequential programming of the processors
: PL7-3,
Axis control programming
: PL7-AXE,
Communication module programming
: PL7-COM.
Each dedicated function installed in the MINI X-TEL Software Workshop and compatible
with the station of the work space can be used by the station without any prior declaration
and has its own work space within the station work space.
TOOLS are service programs that may or may not be integrated in the basic
MINI X-TEL Software Workshop. They increase the effectiveness and the productivity
of the Software Workshop.
Tools are assigned to the declared station. Selecting a specific type of station affects
the type of tools available for use.
Each basic or optional tool installed in the MINI X-TEL Software Workshop and
compatible with the station of the work space can be used by the station without any
prior declaration.

Access Rights
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
In the MINI X-TEL Software Workshop, the right of access is defined when the software
is installed; by default it is defined as Program Max [6]. If the user wishes to define a
different right of access, this can be done in the specific mode during the installation of
the software. Six different access rights can be attributed:
- [1] Operate min. (Om)
Operate: Allows the installation operator to access the process to adjust the values
of preset variables.
Adjust: Allows a maintenance technician to access the process and ensure continued
production. This allows modification of variables and ensures that PLC Run/Stop
incidents are resolved.
Program: Allows the project manager access to all of the functions of the Software
Workshop.
Access to the different tools and functions according to the access rights defined during
installation are listed in Divider C, Section 2.
Remark
As the right of access is defined during installation, it can only be modified during
a new installation of the MINI X-TEL Software Workshop.

2.1-2 XTEL-MEM Tool
XTEL-MEM is designed to create a program that can be executed by the PLC using the
binary codes generated by the various dedicated programs, e.g. PL7-3, PL7-COM, etc.
XTEL-MEM runs in the X-TEL Software Workshop and can access the binary codes
generated by the various dedicated applications to integrate them into the complete and
final application.
The functional breakdown shown below only applies to the TSX and PMX
Model 40 ranges:
Sequential programming of PLCs
: PL7-3, PL7-3 GLD/GLT
Axis control programming
: PL7-AXE,
Communication module programming
: PL7-COM,
Analog input module programming
: PL7-PCL,
PMX process control system programming
: PL7-PMS,
Man-machine dialog programming
: PL7-MMI,
XTEL-MEM IS USED ONLY WITH V4 PLCs
Before using XTEL-MEM, the user must define the dedicated tools that will be used by
the Station. If this phase is skipped, the tool will not be able to correctly define the various
fields required by the dedicated functions. Any change in the tools used requires
remapping of the fields.
XTEL-MEM supports functions used during the design and integration phases of an
application:
PLC processor type selection,
Memory mapping definition,
Binary code integration and chaining when creating or modifying an application,
Elaboration of the associated on-line files,
Binary code version management.
In addition, XTEL-MEM lets the user:
Extract the binary code of the various functions that make up the application from the
stored application file,
Integrate the binary code of a function into an application file. When this is done, only
binary code from functions declared when the application file was created can be
integrated, up to the limit of the available assigned memory space.
All of the functions supported by XTEL-CONF and how to use them is described
in detail in the "X-TEL or MINI X-TEL Basic Tools" manual, Divider D - Section 2.

2.1-3 XTEL-SDBASE Tool
The XTEL-SDBASE tool manages the symbol data base of the station and makes
available to all the programs of the station a common data base containing each variable
plus its mnemonic or symbol, a comment and an extended comment.
In the MINI X-TEL Software Workshop, a PLC station can only have a single symbol data
base common to all the tools and dedicated functions in the station.
The data base can be:
Entirely entered by the user, or
Initialized from data created in XTEL-MOD or XTEL-CAD.
The symbol data base can be accessed by the following programs:
Dedicated function programs
: PL7-2, PL7-3, PL7-3 GLD/GLT, PL7-MMI
Diagnostics programs
: APPLIDIAG, SYSDIAG
User module management program
: XTEL-MOD,

PC/PS-DOS Application Migration
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Import and Export actions can be accessed on the action bar of the MINI X-TEL primary
window via the File menu.
Import
Import allows the user to import files that are external to the MINI X-TEL Software
Workshop into the directory of a function or tool of the current application in the work
space.
To import a file it is important to know where it is located:
Logical drive\Directory\Sub-directory\...\
PL7-2: Recovering files generated under PL7-2 DOS
The default file tree is:
PL7-2 TSX 27/47 under DOS PL7\USER\OBJCODE2\Filename
PL7-2 TSX 17 under DOS PL7\USER\OBJ_2_17\Filename
PL7-3: Recovering files generated under PL7-3 DOS
The default file tree is:
PL7-3 under DOS PL7\USER\OBJCODE3\Filename
USER is the default project name. This name can be changed by the application
designer.
PL7-X: Importing X-TEL files
The file tree is:
Logical Drive\XPROPRJ\PROJECT\STATION\FUNCTION\ZONE
To import a file it is essential to know its directory in the target station field. The user
must only select the storage field:
APPLI or MOD.
Each PL7-X function describes the detailed usage of these fields. In general, most
files are imported into the APPLI field (e.g. .BIN, .DAT, .SCY files) while source files
(e.g. .LIT, .LAD files) are stored in the MOD field.
Export
Export lets the user export files generated by the PL7-X functions of the Software
Workshop from the MINI X-TEL storage tree. The user must specify the target logical
device and the required path before the transfer can be performed.

3.2
Application Backup/Restore Actions
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
These actions are available from the MINI X-TEL primary window via the File menu.
Using these actions, the user can:
Backup the current application in the work space to one or more diskettes, with all of
its assigned Functions and Tools,
Restore an application (that has been previously backed-up in a MINI X-TEL or X-TEL
Software Workshop by using the Backup action) from one or more diskettes to the
MINI X-TEL Software Workshop.
Note:
A Volume or a Project Backed-up on a terminal running OS/2 1.2 or 1.3 cannot be restored to a
terminal running OS/2 1.1.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
3.3
Application Migration from MINI X-TEL to X-TEL
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The transfer of a MINI X-TEL application to X-TEL is done by using the Backup/Restore
actions of the MINI X-TEL and X-TEL Software Workshops (version V42).
The MINI X-TEL Software Workshop uses a file tree structure of the same type as X-TEL,
but is strictly limited to a single project and a single station. Apart from this restriction,
the file tree structures are the same. Using the Backup and Restore actions, the user
can:
Backup the application in the MINI X-TEL work space onto n diskettes.
The backup is made in a way that is transparent to the user. In fact, the backup is made
at the X-TEL "Project" level, but comprises only a single station.
The project and station names are implicit names generated by MINI X-TEL, but the
user can change these implicit names for documentation purposes or to resolve any
conflict of names in the X-TEL Software Workshop.
Restore the application from these diskettes to the X-TEL Software Workshop.
The station restored is directly accessible by the X-TEL Software Workshop by the
standard X-TEL procedures of selecting the project and station.

______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The transfer of an X-TEL application to MINI X-TEL is done by using the Backup/Restore
actions of the X-TEL (version V42 or higher) and MINI X-TEL Software Workshops.
Using these actions, the user can:
Backup an X-TEL (version V42 or higher) project or volume, containing the application to be transferred, onto n diskettes,
Restore the application concerned from these diskettes to the MINI X-TEL Software
Workshop.
The user must choose, by successive selections, the station to be transferred.
The station transferred becomes the current station in the MINI X-TEL work space. The
name of the project and the name of the station are those given under X-TEL.

Remark 1
Restoring an X-TEL station under the MINI X-TEL Software Workshop has to be
done in two steps. The user must introduce all the backup diskettes in
succession and then repeat this process. As the backing up of a project may
involve a large number of diskettes, this operation can be limited by creating (under
X-TEL) a project dedicated to the transfer to MINI X-TEL, in which the station to be
transferred can be selected by a Copy/Paste action. This fictitious project can then
be backed up and transferred to MINI X-TEL on a limited number of diskettes (1 or
2 for a typical station of the TSX V4/V5 type).
Remark 2
Some tools and functions that are declared for a station generated under X-TEL
cannot be installed in the MINI X-TEL Software Workshop. Therefore these tools
and functions cannot be activated.

The OS/2 operating system and its Presentation Manager Graphic User Interface shows
tasks and applications in their own windows. The Presentation Manager allows the user
to run a number of tasks
Bor applications at the same time, each in its own window.
On boot-up of the system under OS/2 and PM, the first two windows displayed are the
Group-Main and Desktop Manager windows created when OS/2 is installed on the
system.
Group-Main window
This window lets the user select execution of the following tasks:
File Manager:
Displays the directories of the various logical drives available on the system. It lets the
user access commands that support directory and file management tasks.
Note:
No lock-outs are supported by the File Manager. This leaves the user free to copy, delete, duplicate
and move files and directories.
OS/2 Window:
Lets the user run an application in a text window.

OS/2 Full Screen:
Lets the user run an application in a window that fills the entire screen. MINI X-TEL
requires an OS/2 full screen session for its installation procedure.
OS/2 System Editor:
Lets the user create and edit text files.
The icons that are displayed across the bottom of the screen represent active
applications that have been minimized.
DOS Compatibility Box:
Represents a full screen DOS session. The compatibility box is used to run DOS

1.2-3 Keyboard
All the actions performed with the mouse can be performed with the keyboard, often
through a combination of keystrokes.
Keyboard shortcuts are a direct command for an action that is accessed directly from
the keyboard. If such a shortcut exists, it is shown after the command in the pull-down
menus.
Menu key letters are shown in the action bar and in the menus as an underlined letter.
When the corresponding menu is displayed on-screen, the action can be accessed
directly by pressing the appropriate key.

2.1-1 MINI X-TEL Primary Window
The Primary Window is displayed when the user requests access to MINI X-TEL.
It is composed of:
A title, which indicates the name of the station and its type,
MINI X-TEL: <Name of the station> [ <type of station> ]
An "Action Bar", which groups the majority of the commands that can be applied to
a station and gives access to the action invoking the Key Manager and supports
access to the Help screens.
A list, which indicates the functions and tools available for the current station. All the
tools and functions installed in the terminal are directly available and displayed in this
list without prior declaration. The user can choose to inhibit a tool or function, in this
case the tool or function will still be displayed in the list with the caption [deleted] shown
next to it. The list can be displayed in two formats, "text" or "graphic".
A scroll bar, which allows the user to display all the tools and functions when the list
is too long to be displayed in a single window.
The MINI X-TEL primary window displays the same fields as the OS/2-PM windows:
System menu, Minimize, Maximize, etc.

2.1-2 MINI X-TEL Primary Window Action Bar
Ther MINI X-TEL Software Workshop uses the same action bar principles as OS/2 and
PM.
The action bar proposes several menus. Each menu displays a list of actions.
The commands that can be accessed from the action bar apply to the entire window.
___________________________________________________________________________
2.1-3 MINI X-TEL Tool and Function Windows
The principle behind these windows is the same, but there are some variations:
The syntax of the window titles is as follows:
B XTEL
Title: TOOL NAME / MINI
If the working field is blank, MINI X-TEL will display its own logo.
The menus accessed through the action bars are specific and specially designed for the
features of each tool.
The PL7-X Functions Windows are not Presentation Manager windows but do support
the ease of use provided by OS/2.
Window titles:
Title: TOOL NAME / MINI XTEL
These windows do not have action bars but use the same presentation as the present
range of PL7-3 and PL7-2 programs. They do support the mouse.
The system menu is more detailed than those of other windows. Actions available there
are described separately.

Note:
Font size with OS/2 1.3 and higher:
OS/2 proposes a choice of 5 fonts (8x8, 10x8, 14x8, 16x8
and 18x8).
The Font Size action changes the size of the characters and graphics displayed in the
windows. The display always defaults to the Font Size 14x8.
Font Size 8x8
Selecting this action reduces the size of the help window while maintaining the same
display contents displayed in a smaller character font.
This lets the user display multiple windows with as much information as possible
displayed in each of them.

On-line help is based on the Microsoft QuickHelp system and its user interface.
The system menu called-up with the help windows is similar to those of all other OS/2
B the Small Font/Large Font choice that lets the user display
PM windows. It comprises
as much text as possible in a reduced size window.
When the on-line help is called-up, the user can use the keyboard or the mouse to:
Select menus,
Move within the text,
Move from one topic to another.
The help screen that is displayed is that of the current context. The user has a number
of options for accessing additional information:
Categories menu in the action bar,
References menu in the action bar,
Reverse video highlighted key words that call-up a specific help screen (click on the
right mouse button to return to the original screen).
There are two types of help screens:
General interest help screens that describe Software Workshop functions,
Specific help screens that describe a window or a function.
The specific help screens are divided into two parts:
A general description of the screen and its function,
The possible actions.

Via the programming port
Use of the driver (TSXPC01) supplied with MINI X-TEL. This mode is selected by
default.
Via a UNI-TELWAY bus
The terminal must be equipped with the driver that is supplied in the form of a diskette
with the TXT L BJR V5 software package. The installation and use of this driver are
described in Divider C, Section 4.
Depending on the configuration of the driver, the terminal switches to:
- Either a UNI-TELWAY bus,
- Or to a telephone network via a modem (internal or external), which permits the
remote maintenance of an installation over a long distance.
Via a FIPWAY network or a FIPIO bus
The terminal must be equipped with the driver that is supplied separately in the form
of a diskette and interface board to install in the terminal. Installation and operation of
this driver are described in the dedicated TXT DM FPC 10M manual. Depending on
the configuration of the driver, the terminal switches to:
- Either a FIPWAY network,
- Or to a FIPIO bus.

selected.
Note 1
The programming port driver is common to all TSX Series 7 PLCs, whether the connection is made
using RS-485 or current loop.
When FTX 417 or FTX 507 terminal is used:
Connection is automatically established via the dedicated Telemecanique PLC port.
The hardware connection is established directly without the need for any other connection
interfaces:
Modular PLCs: Use a T FTX CB 7 4 (FTX 417) or T FTX CB 7 5 (FTX 507) cable,
Compact PLCs: Use a T FTX CB 17 5 cable.
When an IBM PC-PS/2 or equivalent compatible microcomputer is used
Switch over is automatic. The user must however change the actual connections. It is recommended that cables always be connected or disconnected with the microcomputer powered-down.
TSX 27 to TSX 107-420 PLCs: Use the TSX TAC03 conversion package,
TSX 17-20: Use the TSX17 ACC PC package.
Note 2
As the MINI X-TEL Software Workshop cannot access a MAPWAY network, the MAPWAY driver
MAPWAY01 cannot be installed under the MINI X-TEL Software Workshop.

The Telemecanique programs are delivered with a software key module (the original key
module) containing the rights of use.
The MINI X-TEL Software
B Workshop itself is not protected, but certain basic tools such
as XTEL-MEM, and XTEL-TRANSFER require the presence of the MINI X-TEL right of
use installed in the software key module.
The original key module lets the user access the basic tools of the Software Workshop.
However, each optional tool or PL7-X function is individually protected with its own
original key module.
In order to access a number of programs simultaneously on the same machine, the
various rights of use must be combined into a single key module. The Key Manager tool
supplied with the MINI X-TEL Software Workshop permits this operation.
The KeyMngr menu gives access to the Key Manager tool.
The primary window of the Key Manager tool shows the characteristics of the software
key modules in the software key support (number and type of key, access rights, etc.).
It allows the user to select the required function on one of the two menus proposed in
the action bar.
The functions and use of the Key Manager tool are described in Divider C Section 2 of this manual.

Presentation
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The Key Manager program is a standard function that is accessed from the main window
in the MINI X-TEL Software Workshop.
The X-TEL or MINI X-TEL Software Workshops are not protected and in X-TEL, the
various directories and storage layout paths can be created without a software key
module actually being fitted to the system.
However the programs supplied with the Software Workshop such as XTEL-CONF (for
TSXV5 or PMXV5 stations) or XTEL-MEM (for TSXV4 or PMXV4 stations) and
XTEL-TRANSFER require presence of the X-TEL right of use installed in the key module
present on the terminal.
The original key module lets the user access the basic functions of the Software
Workshop. The various optional programs are individually protected with their own
original key modules.
In order to access a number of programs simultaneously on the same machine, the
various rights of use must be combined into a single key module. The installation
procedure handles the various steps that ensure that the user has a usable work key
module.
A key module can take six different states:
Original key module:
The key module supplied with the program contains the original right of use.
Work key module:
The key module comprises the rights of use after the backup key has been made.
Backup key module:
A copy of the rights of use available for backup purposes.
Help (emergency) key module:
A key module that lets the user continue to use the program for a limited amount of
time after a work key module failure.
Empty key module:
A key module after its rights of use have been transferred.
Temporary pass key module:
A key module with a limited service life that lets the user continue to use all
Telemecanique programs in X-TEL or MINI X-TEL.
Incremental key module:
A key module that is used to upgrade the rights of use in an original key module to the
latest version.

2.2-1 Station Configuration
Telemecanique programs are supplied with a software key module with a right of use.
This key module is called the original key module.
Before using the software key module, the user must perform the steps described in this
section.
Transfer the right of use
To use a number of different programs simultaneously, combining their rights of use into
a single software key module is recommended. This operation comprises transferring
the rights. A right of use can only be transferred from an original key module.
Once a transfer has been completed, for as many rights of use as required, a single work
key module contains all of the rights of use. The original key modules have become
empty key modules.

2.2-2 Using the Station
Once the rights of use have been transferred to a single original software key module,
it is strongly recommended that a backup key module be made.
The backup operation creates a backup key module that the user should be sure to store
in a safe place. It is now possible for the user to start using the workstation with the work
key module just created.
Preliminary operations
Original Key
Work Key
Empty Key
Work Key
Backup Key
Reversible operation
Normal operation of the workstation is only possible with a work key module that
contains the rights of use for all of the programs that are installed on the workstation.
A program can only be started if its right of use is present.
During program execution, a regular check is made to ensure that the correct right of use
is present in the work key module.
If the work key module fails or is removed, the program informs the user that any work
in progress must be saved immediately and the workstation correctly and completely
shutdown using the Shutdown action(*). After approximately 10 minutes, the program
stops execution making it impossible to save any data on the application if it is still open.
(*) Under OS/2, all open tasks should be closed before powering down the system.
The backup key module should be kept in a safe place. It does not allow the user
to use the rights it contains directly, this is only possible with the work key, but it does
let the user:
Create an help key module that provides approximately 200 hours of operation,
giving time to procure a replacement for the failed work key module.
A means of proving the rights of use that were originally transferred to the work
key module should the latter fail.
___________________________________________________________________________
2/4
___________________________________________________________________________
2.2-3 Running the Application after a Key Module Failure
Despite the care taken during production of the software key modules, it is always
possible that a failure may occur occasionally.
To ensure that the user can continue to use their programs while a replacement is being
obtained, a help key module can be created.
The help key module supports approximately 200 hours of operation, equal to approximately 25 eight hour working days.
The time base retained is 15 minutes. This means that the working life of the help key
module is reduced by 15 minutes each time one of the programs that it contains a right
of use for remains in service for 15 minutes.
When the 200 hours available are used up, the help key module can no longer be used.
Its service life cannot be extended.
As soon as a failure is detected on a workstation, the user should:
Save work in progress,
Retrieve the backup key previously stored in a safe place and along with the failed
work key module and an empty key module, proceed to create an help key module,
Create an help key module (Create action). When this action is complete, the backup
key module will become an inhibited key module, no longer able to generate help key
modules and the empty key module becomes the help key module that allows
operation to proceed,
Return the failed work key module and the inhibited key module to Telemecanique for
replacement.

In both cases, all the functions of the MINI X-TEL Software Workshop are available:
transfer, debugging, programming, etc.
The MINI X-TEL station behaves as a UNI-TELWAY slave and can be logically
connected via the master to any other device within an X-WAY architecture, providing
that the communication does not pass through any other UNI-TELWAY slave (i.e. within
the normal limits of X-WAY transparency).
Once the driver and the bus master have been correctly configured, the communication
is completely transparent to the user, apart from the question of performance which
naturally depends on the amount of traffic on the UNI-TELWAY bus.

Connection via modems
- PLC side:
The reference numbers of the modules that can be used are as follows:
C
C
Remark
The UNI-TELWAY module can be equipped with either the RS232 6-signal
adapter (SCA1), or the RS232 9-signal adapter (SCA3). The additional signals
handled by the SCA3 adapter are as follows:
- DSR (Data Set Ready): indicates that the modem is powered-up (forced in the
SCA1),
- RI (Ring Indicator): indicates that the modem has received a call,
- DSRS: bit rate selection.
The use of automatic response modems, which is generally the case (V25
standard), allows the user to ignore these signals and to use either the
TSX SCM 2111 module or the TSX SCM 2113 module.
- PC side, two modes of connection are possible:
- The use of external modems (cased); in this case the RS232 port of the PC is used
(COM1 on FTX 507)
- The use of a built-in modem card; in this case the connecting cable to the
telephone socket is supplied by the manufacturer of the modem.
Remark
Telemecanique does not sell modems, but can advise its customers concerning
their selection and use.

Principle of operation
C
C
During installation (see Divider B, Sub-section 5.6), a certain number of slave data link
addresses are assigned to the driver, which must also be configured in the master of the
UNI-TELWAY bus.
The number of data link addresses defined corresponds to the maximum number of
X-TEL tools that can be simultaneously used in the connected mode.
1st case: Direct connection to UNI-TELWAY:
After the X-TEL station is connected to the bus, as soon as the user runs a tool in the
connected mode, the driver will reply to the pollings transmitted by the master to all
the addresses configured (refer to the following diagram). The communication of
tool 1 with the remote device will use the first data link address defined in the driver.
If the user runs a second tool in the connected mode, the second data link address
will be used, and so on.
Similarly, when a tool is shut down or when the local mode is selected, the
communication will be interrupted on the corresponding data link, the driver then
merely replies to the polling of the master on this address. When the last tool is shut
down, the driver stops replying to all the addresses with which it is concerned and is
then considered as disconnected by the bus master. The master then polls these
addresses periodically (once every 10 cycles), as it would for any slave station.
IMPORTANT
If the master does not poll all the data link addresses configured in the driver, the
latter goes into the fault mode. It is therefore essential to configure all the addresses
of the UNI-TELWAY driver in the bus master.

4.1-3
Performance
Some of these factors are common to any use of the UNI-TELWAY bus. The installation
procedures are therefore described in the corresponding reference manual
(TSX D24004E).
Others are specific to the UNI-TELWAY driver and the user must take care not to disturb
the rest of the communication on the bus by an excessive use of MINI X-TEL in the
connected mode.
4.1-4
CC
___________________________________________________________________________
In the case of connection via modem:
- Configuration of the driver
C
C
- Basic parameters: the transfer rate and the communication port depend on the
type of modem used.
B Refer to the manuals of the manufacturers of the modem
and PC for information concerning these parameters.
- Data link addresses: the number of data link addresses of the driver should be
limited, due to the drop in the transfer rate caused by modems on the line. On the
other hand, at least two data link addresses should be configured so as to be able
to pass from one tool to another without the calling modem hanging up the
telephone line. When the second tool is run, the first one must be shut down; which
is impossible if only one data link address is defined. As the MINI X-TEL station
is connected to the PLC in the point to point mode, it is recommended to use data
link addresses 1 and 2 to obtain optimum service.
- Modem parameters: the call number must be to the following Hayes standard:
P for pulse dialing,
T for touch tone dialing,
W for await tone.
Example : T011W2125551234 for the touch tone dialling of subscriber 1234 in the
New York area from outside the country.
IMPORTANT:
The entry of a new number is immediately taken into account by the driver,
without it being necessary to reboot the PC. However, the modification of any
other installation parameter does not become effective until the PC is rebooted.
- Configuration of the master
- Since the master/slave data link is point to point, two addresses to be polled must
also be defined in the master: data link addresses 1 and 2.
- The Time Out of the data link level must be selected according to the transmission
speed.
In the Programming and Installation
Manual of the TSX SCM 2116 module
(Ref. No. D24005E), the recommended
Time Out is more than the transmission
time of 10 characters, to which must be
added the delay due to the modems. In
practice, the values shown opposite
give satisfactory results.
Speed
Time Out
300/600 bps
1000 ms
1200/2400 bps
500 ms
4800/9600 bps
200 ms
___________________________________________________________________________
4/10
___________________________________________________________________________
Tests have shown that there is little disadvantage in having a long Time Out, in so far
as only one address at the maximum is not polled, this Time Out will occur only once
every 10 successful pollings of the other address.
4.1-5
IMPORTANT:
Experience shows that different behavior can be observed among modems that
conform to the same standards. It has also been observed that certain modems
operate correctly with certain PCs, but not with others (limits of compatibility, etc.)
We therefore advise users who do not have the appropriate means of investigation (line
analyzer in particular) to ask their local Telemecanique office for the list of approved
modems before choosing their equipment.
___________________________________________________________________________
4/11
CC
___________________________________________________________________________
4.1-6
On the calling side (PC & MINI X-TEL), the driver takes care of configuring certain
parameters of the modem by sending it the appropriate Hayes command sequence, in
particular the subscriber's number of the remote device.
B
On the called side, the configuration of the modem is the responsibility of the user.
Depending on their type, the modems can be configured in different ways: by switches,
by programming on the front panel, or by programming from a remote terminal by means
of the Hayes commands.
The minimum parameters to be configured are described below, together with the
corresponding Hayes commands.
C
C
Parameters common to both modems:
The following parameters must be configured in the same way in both modems:
- Environment
- Type of modulation: V22, V22bis,... (certain modems recognize the type of
modulation automatically) [ATB and ATF],
- Data transfer rate,
- Asynchronous mode [AT&M0],
Number of bits per character: 11 bits comprising 1 start bit, 1 stop bit , 1 odd parity
bit and 8 data bits [configurable by register],
- Quality of the line: specialized or RTC [AT&L],
- Signal management: all the signals are managed in a standard way
- DTR (108.2), Normal. In line mode, the change from the DTR to the OFF state
forces the modem into the controlled mode and interrupts the communication.
When the DTR is ON the modem is ready and connects if a call arrives [AT&D2],
- RTS, Normal. The CTS (106) follows the RTS (105) without delay [AT&R0],
Depending on the modems, the RTS/CTS delay can be defined in a register, or
by another command [AT*DL0],
- CD (109), Normal. ON when connected and follows the carrier in normal
operation. OFF when the modem is disconnected [AT&C1],
- DSR (107), Normal. ON during communication [AT*MR0].
Parameters specific to the calling modem:
- It must be configured in the calling mode [AT*CA0],
- Selection of pulse or touch-tone dialling [the character P pulse, or T tone is
transmitted by the driver to the modem during the dialling command phase],
- Selection of the unit of time for pulse dialling [AT&P1],
- The call number is transmitted to the modem by the driver.
Parameters specific to the called modem:
- It must be configured in the called mode [AT*CA1].
