ASYNCHRONOUS MOTORS

CONNECTION
Direct starting

Y - starting

Connection diagrams

Direct starting is the simplest method of

starting a three-phase motor and is
obtained by connecting the terminals of the
winding directly with the power supply. This
system is normally used for low power
motors, whereas for more powerful motors
it is necessary to check the features of the
system, which must withstand the starting
current of the motor (from 4 to 8 times the
rated current), without problems. If the
starting current of the motor is higher than
what is allowed by the mains, it is possible
to make use of the Y/ start.

This system is widely used for medium and

high power motors. Y/ starting starts a 380
wound motor with the Y connection of the
winding. Using this system, the starting
current and torque are reduced by approx.
30%. The inconvenience of this system is that
power supply is interrupted during passage
from the star to the delta connection, which
can provoke very short current peaks with a
very high magnetic value. This phenomenon
increases notably if a load with a high
resisting torque is applied to the motor at the
start.

Normally, asynchronous three-phase

single-speed motors are supplied with six
terminals in order to allow the star or delta
connection. If a direction of rotation is
specified in the order (view shaft side), the
terminals of the winding phases are
mounted in such a way that the direction
of rotation is clockwise, when a triad of
voltages in the L1-L2-L3 order is applied.
If the connection is L2 - L1-L3, the direction
of rotation will be the opposite
(counterclockwise).

There are also other types of starting, which we deemed unadvisable to describe here. Please contact our engineering department
for further information.
