Samplingofpowertransformers,tanksandrelatedequipment.MethodDerivedfromASTMD923StandardPracticesfor
SamplingElectricalInsulatingLiquids

1. Ensureareaissafeandtakeallnecessarysafetyprecautionsregardingworkingona
transformerandhandlingoil,useofPPEismandatory.Keepourenvironmentcleanby
disposingofwastethoughtfully.
2. Beforecommencing,checkoillevel,ifoilcannotbeseeninlevelgaugedonotproceed.
Identifysamplingpointeg.BottomTankvalve,TapChangervalveetc.EnsureValve/Tapis
closedandgiveareaawipedownifoilyanddusty.
3. Placeadriptrayunderplugthenremoveplugfromsamplingportandagaincheckfordirt
andwater,wipecleanifnecessary.Attachasuitablesamplingfittingatthesamplingport.
4. CutasuitablelengthofclearPVCtubing(normally3050cminlength)andattachto
samplingfitting.Disposeofthistubingforeveryunitsampledtoavoidcrosscontamination.
5. CheckunitforPOSITIVEpressureorifunderVACUUMasfollows:Takeextremecarewhen
performingthisprocedure.Placeasmallamountofoilinplastictubingattachedto
samplingport,holdinaUshapesooilsitsatbottom,openvalveslowly,ifslugmoves
towardselectricalapparatusquicklyshutvalveoffanddonotsampleunit,UNITISUNDER
VACUUM,recordthisonpaperworkandinformsitepersonnel.Iftheslugmovesawayfrom
theelectricalapparatus,apositivepressureexistsandsamplescanbeobtainedsafely.
6. Allowatleastonelitreofoiltodraintowastebucketordrum.Ifthereareanyvisible
contaminantsintheoil(particles,sludge,water)continuetodraintowasteuntiloillooks
visiblyclean.Stopprocessifmorethan10litresofoilisneededtobedrainedandnotifysite
personnel.
7. Inasparebottle/jar,fillfullwithoilandmeasuretheoiltemperaturewithathermometer,
recordthisonpaperworkimmediately.
8. Runsomeoilinto1Lsamplebottle(1/3full),replacelidandgentlyrinsetheinternalsofthe
bottleandlidbyrotatingbottleatanangle,thenemptyoilintowaste,takingcarenotto
contaminatelid.Dothistwomoretimes.
9. Bottleisnowsufficientlycleantotakesample,runoilintobottlebykeepingendoftubingas
highaspossibleinbottleandfilltobrim,dothisstepslowlysoastoavoidairbubbles.Cap
tightlybutdonotovertighten,thenwipebottleclean.
10.Repeatsteps8and9withthesmaller100mlsamplebottle(forDGA/Moisturetesting).
11.Closeallvalvesandsecuresamplingportafterremovingsamplingfitting.
12.Tagbottlesappropriatelysotheycanbematchedwithpaperwork,thiscanbedonewith
paintmarkersonthelidandbottlesideeg.AonthebottlesandAonthepaperworketc.
Fillinasmanydetailsaspossibleonpaperworksuppliedensuringtheserialnumberofthe
unitisrecorded.
13.Packageallbottlessecurelywithragstoavoidtransitbreakage.Sendtolaboratory.
