A
celebration of the late great Artist
Raul Anguiano's 100th Birthday is
occurring in Sunset Beach and Long

great Mexican muralists of the 20th Century.
He lived in Coyoacan, Mexico and Huntington Harbor the last three decades of his life.

the longtime former art teacher, whose own
works are in the National Museum of Water
Color in Mexico City. "His appreciation of
this culture is apparent in the beautiful murals he created for the Bowers Museum in
Santa Ana, the Mexican Consulate in L.A.
and East Los Angeles College."
At his exhibits, there are some beautiful
new art books out on Anguiano and his
works, autographed by his widow, Brigitta.
The artist of more than 50 murals and
100 exhibits has had his work featured
in Cuba, Brazil, France, Germany, the
former Soviet Union, Mexico, Chile,
Japan and the United States. A former
art teacher, Anguiano's portraits were
even featured in Mexican school
books. One of the most famous paintings from the man, who was one of 10

Bill Anderson, Anguiano's brother-in-law,

has represented the master since the gallery
opened in 1995. The close friends painted
together for 32 years, including an incredible
mural at East Los Angeles College, which
depicts Mexican art history At the present
time, Anguiano also is having an important
exhibit at the Museum of Latin American
Art in Long Beach. The talented man, who
started drawing at 5, was born in 1915 and
died in 2006.
Anguiano was best known for his murals,
along with his portraits, figure drawings,
etchings, lithographs, pastels, block prints
and watercolors, with an emphasis on the
Mayan Culture. In 1949 he was selected as
the official artist for the expedition to
Bonampak, the jungle that was the home of
the Mayans. This trip discovered the Mayan
fresco murals. "Raul was very affected by
his experience with the Mayan people and it

her foot with a knife. Some of his local
paintings, including the Huntington
Harbour Boat Parade and the Sunset

Coast Highway, Sunset Beach, California.
"His artwork has such a dramatic
sense to it," said amazed recent exhibit
spectator, Patrick Brenden, Huntington
Beach Planning Commissioner and
Chairman of the HB Chamber of
Commerce. "You can really see the
personality and motion of the subjects
he illustrates. It draws you in and makes me
think of what the person is thinking."
HB City Councilwoman Barbara Delgleize, the council's liason to the HB Art
Center, said she was in awe of Anguiano's
spectacular work. HB Planning Commissioner Lyn Semeta, an artist and member of
the HB Art League, loves his style on exhibit
at Anderson's Gallery. "It's something special and I recommend others come and admire it," she said. For more information, call

report..."According to various reports After a gunman killed four Marines and a sailor
at a Navy Reserve Center in Chattanooga last month, the Navy plans to station armed
guards at all of its reserve centers across the country, NBC News has learned.
An email sent to Naval Reservists nine days after the attack, and obtained by NBC
News, says "VOLUNTEERS NEEDED IMMEDIATELY!" to provide 45 days of
"armed sentry watchstander duty" at 53 "NOSCs," or Navy Reserve Centers, beginning
Aug. 17, and also asks for volunteers to provide a full year of armed sentry duty at 70

The Navy confirmed to NBC News that it plans to station armed personnel at all 70
reserve centers that are not located on military bases. The guards would be reservists

methamphetamine daily and the coroner's

report said testing found the level of
methamphetamine in his blood was in the
"toxic range."
"Methamphetamine is a known cardiac
central nervous stimulant," said the report,
which was made final on June 12 and obtained by The Associated Press on Tuesday.
It was first reported Tuesday by TMZ.com.
Methamphetamine, prescription drugs
and drug paraphernalia were found in the
home.
The reclusive Getty had said in recent
court documents that he was
battling a "serious medical conAndrew dition" that could endanger his
life. He obtained a restraining
order earlier this year against
his girlfriend, Lanessa DeJonge, noting her behavior and
arguments between them, and
expressing concern that "heated
arguments can cause my blood
pressure to rise dangerously."
Getty wasn't the first heir of
the oil tycoon to die in middle
age. His cousin, J. Paul Getty
III, was kidnapped in Italy in
1973 and the kidnappers cut off
the 16-year-old's ear. The oil
baron eventually paid a ransom
reported to be $3 million. Once
released, the teenager resumed
a jet-set lifestyle of abusing drugs and consorting with rock stars until he suffered a debilitating stroke in his 20s. He died in 2011
at age 54.
His stepmother, actress Talitha Pol, who
had lived her own jet-set life, died of a
heroin overdose in 1971.
"The story of the famed Getty family is
one of the most obvious examples that
money, cold hard cash, doesn't buy happiness," Forbes Magazine reported in a profile
last year when it listed the combined family
fortune at $5 billion - 54th highest on its list
of America's most wealthy."

shares a heartbreaking story of
how wealth, fame and lifestyle can
be a quick path to death..."This undated

dead in his Los Angeles home on March 31,
2015. (AP)
Andrew Getty, an heir to Getty oil fortune, died from an ulcer-related hemorrhage
but he also had a toxic level of methamphetamine in his body, according to an autopsy
report obtained Tuesday.
Getty, 47, was found dead on the bathroom floor of a
bedroom in his
Studio
City
hillside home
on March 31,
several days
after he was
last seen alive.
His body and
the area were
bloody but investigators said
there were no
signs of foul
play. Getty's
personal assistant told investigators
that
Getty had complained
of
stomach pain for the past two months and
the assistant had scheduled a doctor's appointment for him on April 1 one day
after his body was discovered.
The death was ruled accidental by the Los
Angeles County coroner's office. An April 2
autopsy report concluded that Getty died
from a gastrointestinal hemorrhage due to
duodenal ulcers but "acute methamphetamine intoxication" and atherosclerotic heart
disease hardening of heart arteries
were contributing factors.

California Republicans are reacting
to GOP debate, hosted by the Fox
News Channel.
Jim Brulte, California Republican Party chair
I was pleased with the depth and
breath of the experience of the candidates on the stage. Almost all showed
they would be strong leaders and we
are fortunate to have top tier candidates.
George Runner, Vice Chairman,
State Board of Equalization
Carly deserves to be in the next
main event. Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL)
and Ben Carson had the best overall
responses. Trump is all about Trump
and is gaming conservatives frustrated
with the Washington hypocrisy.
Cynthia Bryant, Executive Director, California Republican Party
Rubio had the line of the night for
me when he said the Republican Party
is blessed with so many great candidates and the Democrats don't have a
single one.
Shawn Steel, Republican National
Committeeman, California
Trump flaming out faster than I
thought he would. Surprise performances from Kasich, Huckabee. Bush,
Rubio, Christie performed well. Underperformed: Walker, Paul, Christie,
Carson.
James Lacy, ACU Board Member
and Author, Taxifornia
Trump stumbled, Bush and Walker
were just OK, Rubio, Carson and
Huckabee surely gained ground,
maybe Cruz and Christie too. Kasich
was better than OK. Biggest loser was
Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) though Trump
close. I could see Fiorina eclipsing
Rand Paul in future polling.
Dave Gilliard, California Political
Consultant
Marco Rubio looks and feels like
the future. He's a winner. Rand Paul's
navet on world issues disqualifies
him. He was a loser last night.
Bill Whalen, Fellow, Hoover Institution
What a shocker: the Trump-centric
field produced a Trump-centric debate.
Trump was, a various times, surly, impudent and condescending toward his
fellow candidates and the Fox News
moderators. Add that he squinted,
rarely smiled, played fast and loose
with the facts, didn't offer much in the
way of concrete solution sand in no
way was statesmanlike and we can rest
assured: his poll numbers will probably go up.
I thought it was a good night for
John Kasich, who's been on the national scene for a long time but rarely
the national stage. He was personable,
energetic and talked problem-solving.
Aaron McLear, California Political Consultant
Senator Rubio, Governor Kasich,
and Ms. Fiorina gained the most
ground while Senators Cruz and Paul
disappointed. Governors Bush and
Christie were solid and the others were
unremarkable except Trump, who
might have disqualified himself by
threatening to run as an independent.
Diane Harkey Member, State
Board of Equalization
Trump, our spoiler, was "Obamaesque"-if it's not about him on his
terms, he doesn't want to play. Rubio
was polished and presidential, Christie
defended himself and made Paul look
a bit off the mark, Bush didn't hurt
himself and is in for the long haul.

John Thomas, California Political

Consultant
Bush's do no harm strategy was effective. Every answer appeared to be
reflective of a general election position. He's waiting for
Trump to implode
and pick up the
pieces to secure the
nomination.

Jeff Corless, California Political

Consultant
Fiorina won, Trump lost big especially with women the way he berated
Megyn Kelly. Jeb handled the tough-

Rubio had the best

opening speech that
captivated
the
essence of his campaign - inspirational.
Was there an earlier debate? Those
other candidates will
remain irrelevant except for Fiorina who
might have gained a bump.
Scott Baugh, Chairman Emeritus, Orange County Republican
Party
The beautiful thing about debates is
that true colors come out. Trump is not
presidential. Walker and Rubio looked
like they want a better America, and
could lead us into a dynamic new future.
Tim Clark, California Political
Consultant
Kasich was engaging and knowledgeable; he likely gained the most
tonight. Bush held his own on tough
immigration and education questions.
Bush also looked the most "presidential." Walker fared well in substance
and connected to the GOP base.
Harmeet Dhillon, Vice Chairman,
California Republican Party
Kasich and Rubio outperformed at
the debate, while Rand Paul and Sen.
Ted Cruz (R-TX) did not live up to
their expectations. Trump came off
pretty much as self-advertised, except
he really reinforced an image of misogyny with his personal attacks. I did
not care for the format, and did not
think it did justice to our mostly fine
candidates. To call this a "debate" is a
misnomer. We should have had Fiorina on the stage, and Jindal, or had a
different format giving more time and
weight to all of them, in rounds.
Arnold Steinberg, Californiabased Political Pollster
As I had predicted, Carly won the
earlier debate, the spin should bump
her numbers. Trump and Paul, and
possibly Huckabee and Christie, were
hurt. Everyone else held their own.
Tom Del Becarro, U.S. Senate
candidate and former CA GOP
Chairman
Despite a terrible job by Fox, we
began to hear and see the depth of the
Republican field. It will only be finished by the Republican who offers a
clear plan not only winning but also
about governing.
Reed Galen, California Political
Consultant
Rubio, Kasich, Bush and Christie.
Each either exceeded my expectations,
surpassed them or held steady. Trump
loses on GOP nomination and
women's issues. Rand Paul was the
clear loser. Short air time and two
body blows from Trump and Christie.
Michelle Steel, Orange County
Supervisor
Fiorina and Rubio were the big winners tonight. I was disappointed with
the performances of Cruz and Paul.
Trump is still a clown. All that said, it's
clear that any of the Republicans are
better than any of the Democrats.

est question of all-regarding his last

name being Bush-extremely well, arguing he has his own record of accomplishment upon which he should be
judged.
Joe Justin, California Political
Consultant
As a Detroit Republican, I'm interested in a leader who can expand our
party into communities Republicans
are afraid of and I saw Senators Marco
Rubio or Rand Paul do well.
Joel Pollak, Editor-In-Chief, Breitbart California
I did not enjoy the Fox News debate. It seems better in retrospect, because there were some memorable
moments. But though I prefer hardhitting questions, I think the moderators went too far. Some of their
questions were personal-especially to
the frontrunners, Donald Trump and
Jeb Bush. Megyn Kelly owes viewers
an apology for referring to the Iraq
War as "your brother's war" in a question to Bush.
Other questions were more appropriate to a one-on-one interview than
a debate. The winner was Ted Cruz,
who gave calm, conservative answers
and avoided getting into self-destructive fights with other candidates.
The overall winner, though, is Carly
Fiorina, who shone in the undercard
debate. There, too, the moderators
were also unduly harsh. They spent the
first round of questions essentially
asking each candidate why he or she
hadn't dropped out yet. If you're going
to stage a debate for the lower-tier candidates, don't insult the participants.
But Fiorina made the most of it and
got more air time than she would have
in the larger forum. Paradoxically, by
missing the cut, she was the biggest
success of the night.
Finally, my short take-aways:
Fiorina got the biggest bounce of
the night, "winning" the second-tier
debate. I didn't see much in the debate
to change the status quo. I thought
Rubio and Kasich turned in solid performances. I wanted Cruz, who did
well, to take the gloves off more.
Walker under-performed. Trump was
Trump, albeit I was surprised he
wouldn't pledge to support the eventual GOP nominee.
The loser of the night was FoxNews
- instead of mixing up all of the contenders into two equally featured
rounds, they set it up so that many potentially great contenders were shoved
into the obscurity of
an early "loser's
round."

for West Nile virus.
In 2014, Orange County

West Nile virus in the nation with 280, including
nine deaths. OCMVCD

from 21,754 in May and up 18.1 percent from 20,635 in June 2014.
The median price for a Southern California home was $442,000 in June, up
2.8 percent from $430,000 in May and
up 5.7 percent from $418,000 in June
2014.

said Andrew LePage, a data analyst for

CoreLogic. Continued job growth, low
mortgage rates, more confident consumers and other factors have put more
wind in the housing

to the words and music of Elvis Costello on
"Beyond Belief: A Tribute to Elvis Costello,"
a CD compilation co-produced by Fountain Valley resident John Borack and released in 2015 on SpyderPop
Records.
When the project began to take shape about three
years ago, Borack and co-producer Olivia Frain decided that they wanted 100% of the funds raised from
the sale of the CD to go to a music-related non-profit
organization. Thanks to the amazing folks at SpyderPop Records and to 50 equally amazing artists who
contributed their time and talents to the cause, this
dream has been realized.
In July, Borack and SpyderPop Records' Lannie
Flowers presented a check for $5,000 to the Mr.
Holland's Opus Foundation. This money will go directly to an under-funded school music program in
need of instruments. (The school will be chosen this
fall.) Borack, Frain and SpyderPop are hoping that
this is only the beginning and that there will be an

opportunity to present another check to Mr. Holland's Opus in the not-too-distant future.
The Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation keeps music

If They Would Only Kobritz

Focus Their Anger On on
Each Other - Game Day! Sports
M

ost NFL players who violate the

leagues
personal conduct policy get
By Jordan Kobritz
a second chance or more.
New York Jets backup quarterback Michael
Vick got a second chance after serving 18 months
in federal prison for running a dog-fighting ring
and abusing his dogs. Vick made his way back
to the NFL by proving he was truly sorry for his
actions. Former Carolina Panthers defensive end
Greg Hardy was convicted of assaulting his girlfriend. He was slapped with a 10-game suspension, reduced by an arbitrator to four games and
will suit up for the Dallas Cowboys in week five
of the season.
San Francisco 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith got
a second, third, fourth and fifth chance. Since
2012, Smith has been arrested for DUI, felony gun
charges and making a false bomb threat. Not until
his third arrest for DUI did the 49ers finally release
him. Defensive end Ray McDonald, Smiths teammate, also received multiple chances. After he was
accused of domestic violence and sexual assault in
separate incidents the 49ers released him. McDonald was then signed by the Chicago Bears but in May
they also released him after two more arrests.
Numerous other NFL players have been convicted and/or suspended by the
league for DUI, domestic violence and sexual assault, yet they received a second
chance, in some cases multiple chances. But Ray Rice is the exception. Prior to
the 2014 season Rice was suspended indefinitely for an altercation with his thengirlfriend, now wife, in which he cold-cocked her at an Atlantic City casino.
Rices crime mirrors that of Hardy and McDonald, but no team has signed him
after he was released by the Baltimore Ravens. So why hasnt he received a second chance?

Unfortunately for Rice, unlike the incidents mentioned above, the entire sequence was captured by an elevator camera and the video was released to the public. No one saw a video of Vick hanging his dogs, one of Hardy with his hands
around his girlfriends throat as she was pleading for her life, or one of McDonald sexually
assaulting his victim.
The Rice video was brutal. He has tried to
make amends and turn the incident into a positive, at least for others. In a recent interview
with ESPNs Jemele Hill, Rice said Domestic
violence is real My video put the light out
there. If you have never seen what domestic
violence looks like and you look at my video,
I could understand why some people would
never forgive me.
Rice completed counseling and has become a spokesperson against domestic violence speaking wherever and whenever
invited, including at his alma mater, Rutgers
University. Yet he sits on the sidelines while
the first NFL exhibition games are underway.
It may not be a popular stance, but Rice has earned a
chance to resurrect his NFL career.

CHP Director of Communications Fran

The fear is that we were losing qualified

Retired LAPD Detective

Finds Work
The RSM resident and retired LAPD detective
allegedly has a gambling problem as well as a storied
career handling notorious crimes.

Snowbird Bandit, he said, Im cooked. I

think I should have a lawyer, according to
Gicking.
According to Gicking, when Adair was
being arrested, authorities found $1,120 in
Del Mar race track betting receipts on the defendant. His arresting officers also found a
$300 cash deposit receipt in his wifes bank
account and a receipt for a $100 cash deposit
in his own account. All of the receipts were
dated July 22.
Investigators also recovered a tan fedora
and light-green, button-up shirt in a storage
locker of the defendants that matches what
the Snowbird Bandit is seen wearing in surveillance video, according to the FBI.
The FBI coined the Snowbird Bandit
moniker based on the suspects age and appearance.
Adair told the Orange County Register in
1998 that as a rookie cop, he was among the
officers who responded to the Ambassador
Hotel in Los Angeles following the assassination of presidential hopeful Robert F.
Kennedy, and witnessed the arrest of gunman Sirhan Sirhan.
He told the paper he helped control the
crowd while officers cuffed Sirhan. Relatives said Adair escorted Kennedys wife and
astronaut John Glenn to the hospital where
the senator was taken.
Adairs family members told the Register
that he rescued seven people from a burning
low-income home around 1970. They also
said he worked on the Freeway Strangler and
Night Stalker serial murder cases, and has
had a series of heart attacks in the past couple of years."

EarthTalk
Dear EarthTalk:
Theres a lot of talk
about the potential for
renewable energy sources
like solar and wind. But cheap, abundant coal is still
going to power the world for a long time. How can we
harness the energy from coal without emitting our way
into a much warmer future? ~ Sally Ristau, Erie, PA
Today coal still accounts for some 40 percent of
worldwide electricity generation. The International
Energy Agency (IEA) predicts that global demand
will continue rising to record levels, topping nine billion metric tons annually by 2019. And despite efforts
by China to moderate coal consumption, China still
accounts for threefifths of this shortterm
demand
growth. Meanwhile,
India and other countries in Asia are also
ramping up their coal
use, offsetting declines in Europe and
the U.S.
The world is not
going to stop using
coal ... so we have to
change how the
world does use it,
says Eric Redman, an outspoken advocate for realistic
clean energy solutions and co-chair of the Seattlebased Summit Power Group. He says that the key is
in teaching the world how to utilize carbon capture
and sequestration (CCS) technologies, which take
carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions out of smokestacks
and reuses them or stores them in forms so they wont
enter the atmosphere and exacerbate climate change.

In October 2014, Canadian utility SaskPower

launched the worlds first full-scale clean coal plant
in Saskatchewan. Named one of National Geographics 10 Energy Breakthroughs of 2014 that
Could Change Your Life and winner of the 2015
POWER Plant of the Year award, the Boundary
Dam Power Station Unit 3 CCS project has now exceeded expectations, capturing 135,000 metric tons
of CO2 in less than a year. The plant is on target to
absorb as much as a million metric tons of CO2 annually.
And in June 2015, SaskPower opened its Capture
Test Facility, a lab that lets researchers test equipment, chemical innovation and engineering designs
in a highly controlled environment. Other companies
are also using the facility to develop and test
CCS technologies for
potential use in their
own power plants.
Other promising CCS
technologies in the
works include coal gasification, whereby energy from coal is
converted into a gas that
can be burned as CO2 is
removed, and the Polaris Membrane System,
which uses a speciallydesigned membrane to capture 90 percent of the CO2
emitted from a coal-burning power plant.
These technologies are indeed promising, but cost
still remains the main obstacle to making CCS mainstream. It is obviously cheaper to dump something
in the atmosphere (for free) than to pay the capital and
operating costs of capturing and sequestering it, says
Summit Powers Redman. There are very few mech-

he says, adding: Globally weve so far spent on carbon capture and sequestration less than one percent
of what weve already spent on renewable energy, so
naturally we are not yet very far down the CCS cost
curve.
And while many environmentalists shudder to think
that we will continue to burn coal at all, we may not
have a choice. I think most climate experts would
agree that the maximum realistic deployment of renewables, efficiency and nuclear power will not, by
themselves, allow us to limit atmospheric concentrations of CO2 to 450 parts per million by mid-century, says Redman, adding that CCS is both
necessary and ultimately inevitable. But we need to
move more rapidly.

Affordable Burgundy
Isnt An Oxymoron

f any grape demands contemplation, it's

Pinot Noir.
The great bottles are able to translate time
and place, clearly expressing the characteristics
of their vintage and the soils and climate in which
they're grown. The greatest examples almost always
come from Burgundy, Pinot Noir's birthplace.
But prices for Burgundy's storied wines have skyrocketed. So many wine enthusiasts sim-

ply avoid the entire region, assuming that its wines are
priced beyond reach.
It doesn't have to be this way. Many compelling
wines from Burgundy don't break the bank. And finally, some vintners are making an effort to spread this
gospel.
Amaury Devillard, who helps oversee the vineyards
and winemaking at five estates with his sister Aurore,
is one of them.
"Today, you can easily find wines that offer a classic

&&&

"

expression of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir at a very

fair price," he explained. "The lesser-known appellations are a hidden gem and represent a tremendous
price-to-quality ratio. More than ever, you have beautiful wine for the money."
Devillard, who was chatting with me as a representative the Bourgogne Wine Board, a trade
group, had the most praise for the value offered
in Rully, Mercurey, and Givry, three villages in
the Cote Chalonnaise, a sub-region in Burgundy that's often overlooked by oenophiles.
Wine enthusiasts have always looked to Burgundy for wines of consequence. In the Middle
Ages, Cistercian monks began observing different sites and the quality of the resulting
wines, isolating specific vineyards over time.
An informal classification of vineyards soon
emerged, and by the end of the 19th century,
the local agricultural board had created a
three-tier system for rating the various sites.
The French government formalized this
ranking in 1936. Today, Burgundy's vineyards are classified as "Grand Cru," "Premier Cru," and "Village." Wines from unclassified
sites are bottled by their regional designation.
Just 32 vineyards are classified as "Grand Cru," and
together, the resulting wines comprise less than 5 percent of Burgundy's total production. Oenophiles worship most of them -- and prices have reached epic
proportions.
According to Wine-Searcher.com, which aggregates
retail wine prices from across the globe, 40 of the 50
most expensive bottles of wine now come from Burgundy. Every wine on that list sells for over $1,000
per bottle. In the auction market, where top Burgundy

One could argue that top
Burgundy is still worth the
tariff. Experiences where
Pinot Noir achieves the David White
grape's higher purpose -translating both time and place -- are few and far between, but always spiritual.
The wines that Devillard and I were chatting about
can't really compete with the ones that sell for thousands of dollars per bottle. But they do give a sense
of Burgundy's aspirations. I'd liken it to touring a gorgeous, perfectly manicured garden on a foggy day.
You get a sense of how stunning it would be if the
skies were clear.
Devillard sees a silver lining to Burgundy's rising
prices. "Now that these wines are more expensive then
ever, consumers have the opportunity to discover
lesser known appellations," he said.
In addition to Rully, Mercurey, and Givry, Devillard
highlighted the wines from Santenay and Marsannay.
"When I was 10 years old," Devillard continued, "I
remember my grandfather telling me about a vineyard
that would 'never make good wine.' He was right because the resulting wines weren't very good. But he
was wrong because it wasn't a question of terroir -- it
was a question of quality. And quality has never been
as impressive as it is today.

Raising Teenagers... Perhaps

the Cats Meow...

The Local News, August 15, 2015 hbnews1@aol.com 714.914.9797

or all of you with teenagers or who

have had teenagers, or are a
teenager, you may want to know
why they really have a lot in common
with cats: Neither teenagers nor cats turn
their heads when you call them by name.
No matter what you do for them, it is not
enough. Indeed, all humane efforts are
barely adequate to compensate for the
privilege of waiting on them hand
and foot. You rarely see a cat
walking outside of the house with
an adult human being, and it can
be safely said that no teenager in
his or her right mind wants to be
seen in public with his or her parents.
Even if you tell jokes as well as Jay
Leno, neither your cat nor your teen will
ever crack a smile. - No cat or teenager
shares you taste in music. Cats and
teenagers can lie on the living-room
sofa for hours on end without moving,

26

barely breathing. Cats have nine lives.

Teenagers carry on as if they did. Cats
and teenagers yawn in exactly the same
manner, communicating that ultimate
human ecstasy - a sense of complete and
utter boredom. Cats and teenagers do not
improve anyones furniture. Cats that are
free to roam outside sometimes have
been known to return in the middle of the
night to deposit a dead animal in your
bedroom. Teenagers are not above that
sort of behavior. Thus, if you must raise
teenagers, the best sources of advice are
not other parents, but veterinarians. It is
also a good idea to keep a guidebook on
cats at hand at all times. And remember,
above all else, put out the food and do
not make any sudden moves in their direction. When they make up their minds,
they will finally come to you for some
affection and comfort, and it will be a triumphant moment for all concerned.

of its 1960s and 1970s-era ancestors, which
were equipped with low pipes.

3. Harley-Davidson Sportster
($8,399 - $11,799)

he modern day Harley-Davidson Sportster is a tried and true descendant of one

of the longest continually running models
in motorcycle history, which was originally
launched in 1957. Though it still retains its
signature architecture and air-cooled v-twin
configuration, the Sportster now
adds electronic fuel injection and
available ABS to its repertoire.

but the Scout does a solid job of straddling

historic styling and modern convenience.

6. Moto Guzzi V7 ($8,490 $10,490)

oto Guzzi's rich history is recalled in

many of their models, including the
V7 (seen here in Racer trim). This elemental naked bike's calling card is its transversely-mounted v-twin engine, which
delivers Moto Guzzi's signature wiggle (ie,
torque shift) effect when you roll on the
throttle.

4. Honda CB1100 ($10,399)

7. Star Motorcycles Bolt ($8,290 $8,690)

aking a cue from the Harley-Davidson

Sportster playbook, Star Motorcycles'
Bolt is a retro style ride that features a
942cc air-cooled v-twin. The C-Spec version adds caf racer cues for a cool, armsstretched riding posture.

8. Suzuki TU250X ($4,399)

uzuki's TU250X looks like a classic

standard, though it adds fuel injection.
California residents, however, don't get to
experience this small 250cc bike's
charms: the TU250X is not available
there.

9. Triumph Bonneville ($8,099)

onda's old CB-series bikes

were evocative expressions of
Universal Japanese Motorcycles,
the sort of standard you could "see
through." The revitalized CB1100
packages that formula with an
1,142cc air-cooled engine and retro
styling.

he Triumph Bonneville was so cool

that Steve McQueen and Arthur
Fonzarelli rode one. Maintaining its
classic styling but adding fuel injection
and more available accessories, the
modern day Bonneville manages to be
both appealing and practical.

5. Indian Scout ($10,999)

hough it's graced with a few

modern touches, the Indian
Scout convincingly recalls the brand's
Harley-challenging heritage. Purists might
scoff at the liquid-cooled 1,133cc v-twin,

amaha's SR400 is essentially the

same bike they've sold for
decades; though it adds fuel injection,
this standard still has a kick starter, offering
a nearly completeretro experience for those
wishing to re-live the past.

Motorcycles Expert Basem Wasef revs
his engine to spark our interests to fuel our
dream..."When it comes to motorcycle history, nostalgia isn't just a romantic notion-it's a feeling that's captured in several models you can buy straight from the showroom.
These ten motorcycles may be inspired

direct descendants of decades-old platforms), but their reliability and factory warranties make them alluring alternatives to
classic motorcycles.

Good News
For Real Estate
Investors

reddie Mac recently changed a

guideline that will allow real estate
investors to secure more favorable
rates on their investment properties.
Until now, both Fannie Mae and Freddie
Mac had the same limitations on the number of
properties an applicant could own in order to
be eligible to receive agency backing. Obtaining this backing is important as it provides the
bank lending the money with additional assurances, thereby lessening the
risk associated with
the loan. A lower risk
for the bank equates
to a lower rate for the
applicant.
For years, the rules
on maximum number
of properties had remained unchanged.
Those financing or refinancing a primary
residence were allowed
to own up to 10 properties and still be eligible
for Fannie or Freddie
backing. By contrast,
those seeking financing
for either a second home
or an investment property were limited to only owning 4 properties.
This means someone owning 5 or more properties was not able to secure the same low
mortgage rates that available to someone who

owns 4 or less units. Until now.

Freddie Mac has increased the maximum
number of allowable properties from 4 to 6
units (Fannie Mae has remained at 4 units).
This opens the door for real estate investors
who own 5 and 6 properties to seek improved
financing

terms on the
units they own. Securing a lower rate on these
mortgages creates the opportunity for a lower
monthly payment on the mortgage, thereby increasing the monthly cash flow from the investment properties. All in all, this is very good

Arnaud Dufour

news.
One important
detail in this guideline is that the Fannie and Freddie only count
the number of financed properties, not the total
number of properties owned. For example, take
someone who owns 8 properties but owns three
of those properties free and clear. They only
have mortgages on five properties. According to Fannie
and Freddies guidelines,
this individual would have
five properties and would
be eligible for financing according to Freddie Macs
new guidelines.
Its also important to understand that commercial
buildings are also excluded from this count.
Fannie and Freddie are
only concerned with residential buildings of 1-4
units. Apartment complexes of 5 units or more
are also excluded from
the tally.
For a real estate investor owning multiple properties, this as an opportunity
to reduce their mortgage rates and increase the
cash flow from their investment units. Simply
contact your mortgage professional to determine the details on how much could be saved
as a result of this guideline change.

Did You Know

They Were Spies

The espionage game is a thankless racket the

sign of being good at your job is that nobody can
ever know. Thats what makes the people in this list
so surprising. They were well-known in other walks
of life but managed to fit in some undercover work
for the military on the side. So lets blow the cover
of people you didnt know were spies.

JOSEPHINE BAkER
One of the biggest sex symbols of the 1930s, the
Bronze Venus became a worldwide star on the basis of
her exotic good looks and dance ability. Josephine
Baker would perform African dances with her pet cheetah and became the first African-American woman to
star in a major movie.
In 1940, Baker was recruited by the French Chief of
Counterespionage to become an informant. When the
Axis took France during World War II, Baker performed
for the occupiers, but kept her ears open for sensitive
information, which she would pass to the Resistance in
invisible ink on her sheet music.
