it seemed like the two shared a secret.

A 1. The artist looked thoughtful for a moment and then shook his head and said that he was sorry, but he
couldnt take up the assignment because he had decided to retire and was not available for hire.

A 2 The artist wanted to explore the limits of his abilities. He did not want money, but food and a bed
instead. He did not even want the patron to pose because he had an excellent memory. As he could see the
patrons portrait in his minds eye he insisted that while he worked on his portrait no one must disturb him
and he must be private.
Q 3 Why did the artist insist on a privacy contract?
A3 In his career of forty five years, Monsieur I Abbaye had yearned to paint in his own way. He hungered
to break free of restraints. But the guild, his craft and livelihood, would never have allowed it so he followed
their rules although he was never proud of it. The artist gazed upon that twenty-foot wall and thought of all
that space to give imagination wings.

A 4 When the artist was eight years old he was an apprentice to the great Ambrogio Lorenzetti. He didnt
want to dishonour his name. He was taught the art of grinding pigment, laying plaster, sometimes slowly,
sometimes faster. He was taught how to draw and, not to hurry. He felt that a masterpiece took some time.

Ans. 1 Joseph was a large white horse. He was drawing the milk wagon used by Pierre. He did not have a
name when he came to the company first. He had a soft neck and his belly shone. He was a kind, gentle and
faithful horse. Joseph knew the milk route well.
2. How do you know that Pierre and Joseph grew old together?
Ans. 2 Pierre and Joseph both grew old together very slowly. Pierres huge walrus moustache turned pure
white. Joseph did not lift his knees so high, or raise his head quite as much. Pierre started carrying a heavy
walking stick.
3. What did Jacques suggest to Pierre?
Ans. 3 When Jacques noticed that Pierre was carrying his walking stick he thought he was suffering from
gout. So he told Pierre to teach Joseph to carry the milk to the front door so that he neednt strain himself to
get down from the carriage.

1. We read It was very bitter. What was bitter and why?
Ans. 1It was very bitter that Tom could not be more sympathetic towards Maggie First he laughed at her and
then he wanted to go down to dinner indifferent to her plight. She might have to forego dinner and be
scolded by everyone.
2. What did Aunt Glegg comment about Maggie?
Ans.2 Aunt Glegg used her loudest and severest tone of voice and said that little girls who cut their own hair
should be whopped and fed on bread and water. They should not be allowed to come and sit down with their
aunts and uncles.
3. She stood with a sense of freedom as if she had come out from a wood into the open plain. Freedom from
what? What is compared to a wood and to open plain?
Ans.3 Maggie felt free and light after cutting her hair. Her thick hair is compared to the wood and the lighter
mane left after chopping the locks is compared to the plain.
4. In paragraph 15, we read that Maggies cheeks began to grow pale and her lips trembled a little. What was
it that caused such a change in her?
Ans.4 Maggie began to regret her act when she saw that Tom was laughing at her. She suddenly realized that
she was going to be scolded for being naughty and that she would hardly feel any sense of triumph when she
faced her family.
