San Andreas
Summarization: Ray is a LAFDA rescue pilot, who saves a girl, Natalie, whose car was
stuck on the side of a cliff. In the midst of a divorce with her wife, Emma, he calls his
daughter, Blake, to discuss their upcoming trip to San Francisco. On the other side of
the story, seismologist Lawrence Hayes and his colleague Dr. Park are at the Hoover
Dam talking over the phone discussing a breakthrough in earthquake prediction when
an unknown fault nearby shifts, triggering a 7.1 magnitude earthquake. The Hoover dam
collapses killing Dr. Park in the process when he stopped to save a little girl. Back to
Ray, when he was called to work, Blake reluctantly decides to go with Daniel, her
mothers new boyfriend, to San Francisco where he is completing a downtown high-rise
building.
Hayes discovers that the San Andreas Fault is starting to shift, triggering a 9.1
magnitude earthquake that starts destroying major cities along the fault line. Emma was
currently having lunch with Daniels sister, Susan when it hit Los Angeles, destroying the
major part of the city along with Susan being killed in the process. Emma was talking to
Ray on the phone when the quake happened and was able to cry for help. Ray was
onboard in his helicopter and was able to save Emma. Much of Southern California was
destroyed by the 9.2 magnitude earthquake. Meanwhile, in San Francisco Blake was
waiting for Daniel in the lobby of the building where she meets her love interest, Ben
along with his little brother Ollie. Daniel attempts to leave with Blake, but the earthquake
hits San Francisco when they were inside the car leaving the parking lot partially
collapsed. They were stuck in the car and Daniel leaves Blake to search for help, but
terror took over Daniel and he leaves Blake in the car alone to run for his own life. Ben
and Ollie finds Blake stucked in the car and helps her out. Together, the trio finds a
working line and Blake calls her dad, Ray, to ask for help.
Ray, together with Emma, goes to San Francisco to save their daughter. Meanwhile,
Blake, Ben and Ollie try to find a spot in the city where Ray and Emma can save them;
seeing that their planned rendezvous point, Coit Tower, is already engulfed by flames.
With help from news reporter Serena, Hayes is able to warn others of a much bigger
earthquake in San Francisco, just in time before it hits; becoming the largest earthquake
ever in history, recorded as a 9.6.
Ray and Emma eventually arrive in San Francisco, abandoning their aircraft and
parachuting into AT&T Park just as the aftershocks continue to destroy the city. They
commandeer a boat and hear a warning over the radio that a tsunami is approaching

the city. Along with other evacuees with boats of their own, they are able to get over the
incoming wave near the Golden Gate Bridge. Daniel, who is on the bridge, is killed
when a cargo ship slices the bridge in half and a loose shipping container crushes him.
The tsunami floods the city, causing massive casualties and knocking over several
buildings. Blake, Ben, and Ollie manage to run into Daniel's building moments before
the water hits. They move up floors and manage to signal Ray and Emma, who are
searching nearby for Blake. As they see the trio, the building starts sinking into the
ground, causing water to flood the building. Ben and Ollie are able to escape, but Blake
becomes trapped in the rising water, runs out of air, and, losing hope, nearly drowns
herself before Ray can get to her. Emma crashes the boat through the building's thick
window panes in an attempt to get everyone on board before escaping as the building
completely collapses. Now aboard the small boat, Ray performs CPR on Blake and
finally revives her after several minutes.
Generalization: The earthquake in the film was ignited by the transform boundary
where the San Andreas Fault line is associated with. Transform fault boundary is the
third type of plate boundary where two tectonic plates rub against each other slowly but
continuously and can ignite a massive earthquake in the process. While the movie was
supposed to be a fun disaster flick, its title suggests a scary real-world tie-in. San
Andreas is likely derived from the San Andreas Fault line, which cuts The Golden State
in two. The sliding land boundary separates the state into the Pacific plate and the North
American Plate. According to Geology.com, the fault line runs thorough many populated
areas of California and accounts for many of its earthquakes. The plates shift only a
couple inches a year. However, these shifting rates are only an average.
