Project Description:
The Moving Here: Refugee Heritage Programme is carried out by four London museums and partners from five
refugee organisations or collectives that are working together on a range of projects. In 2005, they created their
own short films, exhibitions and cultural events. Each gives a rich flavour of living heritage through collective
cultural knowledge and individual lives.
The main objectives of the programm are to:
overcome barriers to the direct involvement of minority ethnic groups in recording and documenting their
own history of migration
ensure this history is passed on to the next generation through schools
In March 2007, the programme will launch a new section on its website devoted to new school resources for
history and geography courses which are part of the national curriculum. The resources will feature interactive
lessons, audio and film clips, a gallery, stories of migration, downloadable activities and teacher notes. Tips for
Teachers will also be provided.
A gallery of artworks depicting various aspects of migration to the UK is provided on the Moving Here website
with extracts of their stories.
Lessons to be Learned:
The Moving Here: Refugee Heritage Programme is developing an open conversation about museums as places
to share diverse voices and encourage cultural exchange. It is an interdisciplinary project combining history,
geography, culture and the arts, education, politics. Users can add their own stories to the website or download
videos, sound recordings and text which have - until now - not been available to the public.
The Moving Here: Refugee Heritage Programme opens up new fora for dialogue and understanding of
the history of England by adding new information, visual documentaries, figures and stories of persons from
different waves of migration.
Target Groups:
General population, school teachers, students, migrants to England
