GUARANTEE OF QUALITY
In 1853 OTIS created the first safety elevator in history;
ever since then, right up to today, it has always been the
world leader in vertical transport. A benchmark for quality
and service throughout the world, Otis employs more
than 60,000 professionals worldwide, who continually
strive not only to meet all your expectations but to exceed
them.
Past, present and of course future, a future of constant
innovation and development of new technologies,
in order to offer you the best products imaginable:
elevators that are safer, quieter, more comfortable and
environment-friendly. Quality elevated to the highest
level.

RESPECT FOR
THE ENVIRONMENT
Environment-responsibility is one of the fundamental
pillars of OTIS philosophy. We are determined to make
a green future a reality and to set a benchmark for
the elevator industry by developing clean, low-energy
consumption technologies.
This philosophy is materialized in the OTIS GeN2TM
range of elevators that do not produce hazardous
waste and are up to 50% more energy efficient than
conventional elevators, achieving substantial energy
savings and significant reductions in CO2 emissions.

COMFORT

THE ELEVATOR REIMAGINED

The OTIS GeN2TM Comfort is an environment-friendly, machine-roomless elevator with unsurpassed
levels of comfort, reliability and safety. It uses an exclusive system of flat, polyurethane-coated steel
belts, a technology invented and patented by OTIS.
It is a highly efficient and functional elevator, ideally suited for residential and commercial buildings
and offices, and offers architects greater freedom of design as a machine-room is not necessary.
General contractors benefit from the minimal construction requirements and the reduced costs of
hoistway construction.
For developers, the OTIS GeN2TM Comfort means increased space for sale or rent. Owners benefit
from lower operational costs and users can enjoy unsurpassed ride comfort.

Flat, coated-steel belts:

Technology that re-invents
an industry
In the year 2000, the GeN2TM drive system an
innovation developed and patented by Otis
transformed the elevator industry by replacing
conventional traction ropes with flexible,
polyurethane-coated steel belts.

Otis GeN2TM Comfort system: The benefits

Using flat, polyurethane-coated steel belts in place of conventional
wire ropes provide a smoother and quieter performance.
The gearless machine and the variable frequency drive with vector
control technology provide a comfortable ride and outstanding
stopping accuracy.
The reduced inertia of the gearless machine with a synchronous,
permanent-magnet motor leads to energy savings and reduced
operating costs.
Both the belts and the machine with sealed-for-life bearings are
lubrication-free, thus contributing to environmental protection.
The flat, coated-steel belts have more surface area at the point of
contact which significantly reduces wear on the sheave, and thus
increases the lifespan of the components.
The flat belts make it possible to use a more compact machine
thereby removing the need for a machine room and reducing
building costs.
The PULSETM system, patented by Otis, continuously monitors the
status of the steel cords of the belts 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
As the machine is located on the rails, loads are transferred to the
pit, thereby reducing structural building costs.

and last up to three times longer than
conventional ropes. Their superior
flexibility allows for a much smaller
bending radius.

CONVENTIONAL MACHINE
The old geared machine has more
movable parts, resulting in lower
energy efficiency due to friction and,
thus, higher energy consumption.

TRADITIONAL SPEED CONTROL

Traditional two-speed systems do not give a smooth ride due to the sudden changes of speed, poor
levelling accuracy and longer travel time.

CLOSED-LOOP SPEED CONTROL

Consistently smooth acceleration and deceleration, a faster and more comfortable ride experience and
exceptional levelling accuracy are some of the many benefits of the closed-loop speed control.

TRADITIONAL SHEAVES
The greater bending radius of
traditional wire ropes requires a
machine with a sheave of more
than 600mm in diameter.

GEN2TM SHEAVE
The sheave of the GeN2TM system
is only 80mm in diameter and
has allowed Otis to design a
machine that is 70% smaller than
traditional machines.

TRADITIONAL INSPECTION OF
WIRE ROPES. Traditional inspections
of the wire ropes are only carried out
periodically and require passenger
service to be interrupted for elevator
maintenance.

PERMANENT MONITORING OF THE

BELTS. The PULSETM system continuously
monitors the status of the steel belts 24
hours a day, 7 days a week.

SAFETY FEATURES
For elevator users and maintenance technicians.
Door restrictor
Prevents passengers from opening the car doors when the elevator is stopped
between floors, and from exiting the elevator without following the safety
procedures.
Hoistway access detection
Protects the maintenance technicians, by stopping the elevator from
operating when a landing door is opened, unless the car is on that floor.
Entrance protection (optional)
An invisible screen of infra-red beams that acts as a safety net. If an object is
detected, the door entrance protection system immediately reopens the door.

Entrance protection (optional)

Outstanding levelling accuracy

The reduced stretching of the flat belts compared with conventional ropes, as
well as the use of a closed-loop variable frequency drive, provides outstanding
levelling accuracy (+/- 3mm).
Machine brake system
The VF system prevents the machine from operating while the brakes are
applied.

Levelling accuracy: +/- 3 mm

PROVEN RELIABILITY
Designed to be reliable and built to last
Wear and tear has been significantly reduced and the durability has been increased, thanks
to the strength of the flat, polyurethane-coated steel belts, the crowned sheaves and the
reduced number of movable components in the gearless machine.
Otis has improved its reliability and safety with its patented electronic PULSETM system that
continuously monitors the status of the steel cords of the belt: 24 hours a day, 7 days a
week. Contrary to what occurs with the current visual inspections of conventional wire
ropes, the PULSETM system automatically detects any anomaly and communicates it to our
technicians, thus improving the reliability and safety of the installation.

OTISLINE Centre

REM (optional)
The REM system is the most advanced in its class and
ensures the reliability of the elevator.
The REM system continuously monitors elevator functions
24 hours a day, detecting deteriorating components,
intermittent anomalies and small operational defects that
might otherwise go unnoticed. It also provides immediate,
two-way voice communication between passengers inside
the car and trained Otis personnel at the OTISLINE

SUPERIOR RIDE COMFORT

Using flat belts instead of wire ropes
ensures smooth, quiet performance.
The improved overall comfort is achieved
by a combination of various factors: the
flat polyurethane-coated belts eliminate
the metal-to-metal effect, resulting in a
much quieter operation.
At the same time, the gearless machine,
together with the variable frequency
closed-loop motion control, ensures a
remarkably smooth ride and outstanding
levelling accuracy (+/- 3 mm).
With appropriate hoistway walls, and the
gearless machine mounted on rubber
blocks, the vibrations transmitted to the
building are notably reduced, resulting in
an exceptionally quiet system

LUBRICATION-FREE AND ENERGY EFFICIENT
Neither the belts nor the machine with sealed bearings require any type of lubrication.
The low-inertia, gearless machine has a variable frequency, closed-loop motion control that achieves:
Substantial energy savings compared with conventional machines that are much larger.
Reduction in power supply installed, and thus, lower operational costs
Reduced currents during acceleration and normal run, resulting in further savings in the electrical installation.

SAVINGS OF UP TO 70%
Otis GeN2 Comfort elevators can save up to 70% of the energy consumption of the motor. The table below compares the
nominal power and consumption of the motor of different types of elevator, as well as the car lighting consumption, according
to whether they have automatic car lighting or not:

A further 240 annual savings can be added to the above for the reduction in the power supply contracted.
Otis GeN2 Comfort elevators require less current during acceleration and normal run, resulting in savings when measuring
up the installation.
We calculate that if all the existing elevators in the world were replaced by Otis GeN2, CO2 emissions in the elevator industry
would be reduced by 50% each year.
NOTE: The savings in euros may vary according to the tariff applied by the electric company.

New times, new solutions

The times are continually changing at a
very fast pace. Users are more and more
demanding, and thus our elevators are
now safer, more comfortable and more
environmentally responsible than ever.
Otis has led these changes and become a
benchmark for the sector. Thus we have
gone from one-speed elevators at 0.6 m/s
to two-speed elevators at 1 m/s, we have
incorporated automatic car and landing
doors as standard in all elevators, we have
introduced variable frequency motion
control... Always improving passenger
comfort and reducing travel and waiting
times.
The faster, the better
Otis is leading a change with the GeN2
Comfort at 1.6 m/s, which is now available
for the residential market.
In residential buildings with 8 floors or more,
the speed of the elevator is particularly
important. Not only does it improve floorto-floor time, but it also reduces passenger
waiting times.
The Otis GeN2 Comfort at 1.6 m/s can also
offer a solution for buildings with heavier
traffic demands, such as offices and hotels,
by improving traffic flow within the building
and moving the passengers more efficiently.
If you have any doubts about which type
of elevator to install in the building you
are designing, contact us and we will
recommend the most appropriate elevator
by means of a traffic analysis.

Aesthetics

COMFORT

Car Aesthetics: Widest range of

choices available
The Otis GeN2TM Comfort is not only the
most technologically advanced elevator in the
market, but it also has the widest range of
car panels, floorings, ceilings, handrails, hall
buttons, displays, doors and mirrors.

Optima
The Optima perfectly illustrates the principle that
elegance can be achieved through simplicity provided its based on an inspired idea. With the
Optima design, that idea is embodied by the
car operating panel actually illuminating the car.
Important to the cars refined appearance are
the panels themselves. In three finishes, they are
cheering to the eye and easy to maintain. In fact it is
the balance between the aesthetic and the practical
that defines the Optima car.

14

gen2_portadilla interior1.indd 16

16/6/10 14:43:23

Selecta
The name unequivocally defines the design. The
Selecta car is about choice. Again illuminated by
the car operating panel, it satisfies the most diverse
requirements. There are five car wall designs, various
flooring types together with different car operating
panel designs and handrail types. The possibilities are
indeed endless. Demonstrating that the Selecta car
has been conceived by us to be designed by you.

15

16/6/10 14:43:29

Lumina
The Lumina car is distinguished by its range of ceiling
lighting arrangements. Each offers a different level
of illumination, from the discreet to the sumptuous,
and in combination with a choice of four wall
types, a host of decorative effects can be achieved.
Painstaking detail can also be found in the quality of
the car fittings which cumulatively help establish the
prestige of the Lumina car.

Other car aesthetics available include Resista with vandal resistant

equipment, Medica with all around protection barriers and Panorama
with glass panels. Consult your Otis representative.

Options

OTIS provides a full range of options to satisfy the most demanding requirements. The
following array of choices can be combined to create a unique look and to meet your
specific needs.

COMFORT
Energy efficiency

ReGen (Regenerative Drive)

Produces energy for the building

The GeN2 Comfort can be equipped with the ReGen
drive, a new energy-efficient technology that can
deliver savings of up to 75% compared to conventional
elevator systems*.
When the car is heavily or fully loaded, it utilizes gravity
to descend and the machine creates energy instead of
consuming it, just like a generator. The same occurs
when the empty or lightly loaded car ascends; the
counterweight descends by the effect of gravity and the
machine generates energy.
The ReGen Drive, exclusive to Otis, is able to make
use of this energy and feed it back into the building
grid, where it can be used to power other electrical
components.
Regenerative drives produce clean power which
reduces the harmonic distortion of the incoming line
current, resulting in less pollution of the buildings
electrical power system and helping to protect sensitive
building equipment.
The ReGen drives robust design can withstand
significant voltage fluctuations and can operate with all
standard voltages from 170 to 528 volts, making them
the ideal choice for a broad range of applications. The
ReGen drive is another example of how Otis is leading
the way towards a greener and more energy efficient
future.

The car lighting remains on 24 hours a day, 365
days a year, even when the elevator is not in use
and remains stopped for hours and hours.
The solution in order to avoid this useless
waste of energy is car lighting that switches off
automatically. After the elevator is not in use for
a certain time, the car lighting is turned off and
remains off until the doors are opened when it
returns to service. In this way, up to 70% of the
energy consumed by the car lighting can be saved.
