Assessment for Cogeneration

This unit will be assessed on the completion of a project design of a cogeneration

system suitable for an application determined by the student.
Students are to complete the following assignment by the completion date stated in
the program handed out at the commencement of the class.
Students are required to prepare a design brief for a cogeneration system for a
specific application.
The system design must be based on sound design principles and meet the selection
criteria for the specific set of parameters.
Part 1 Where is it going to be used?
Students are to decide on an application for a cogeneration system. The application
may be any of the following:

Residential from a small single residence to a communal or cluster housing

complex. In these complexes the heat and power is most likely to be used on
site to offset running costs or contribute to the green power.
Community small community building such as a Hospital, aged care facility,
sport or recreational facility. Like the residential system heat and power are
most likely to be used for economic reasons but may also contribute excess
power to the grid.
Industrial Small to medium industrial applications where the heat and power
contribute to the production system or may be sold as energy

Your first task is to describe the facility and explain what features it has that makes it
suitable for a cogeneration system.
In your explanation document the power usage that you can expect. (These figures
will be used to select and justify the size of the co-generation plant in Part 2). Present
this information in a chart, with an estimate of the peak demand.
Part 2 What generator and prime mover are you going to use and why?
Using the data collected decide on the most appropriate cogeneration system. Use
the internet and other available resources to obtain promotional literature of a
cogeneration system, and if possible a cost.
Present a brief overview of your reasoning for the selection of the particular size and
type of cogeneration plant.
Some of the points to consider should include:
Environmental effects
Fuel
Type of prime mover
Type of generation system (e.g. Turbine, direct drive)
Issues of connecting to the grid

Part 3 - What are the broader installation issues?

Considering the size of the cogeneration plant and the location and type of
application. Present a description of the considerations that will need to be made
when installing the plant.
This may be done in either:
a written report format,
or
as a plan of the building that has been suitably labelled
Draw up an installation specification to identify the main components of the
installation.
The main specifications should include at least:

Cogeneration plant
Location and foundation details
Additional plumbing, heating and cooling requirements (keep this simple)
Fuel storage requirements
Grid connection details
Control system to use (how is it switched on and off?)

Part 4 How much will it cost?

Prepare a costing sheet for the system.
The costing sheet should include the cost of all materials and resources. For this
exercise cost the installation of the cogeneration plant only. Heating and cooling and
their related installation does not have to be included.
Some ideas on what to include are:

Cost of cogeneration plant

Cost of fuel storage (if applicable)
Cost and installation of foundations and sundry buildings to house the plant if
applicable. (show estimates of labour etc)
Cabling to and/or from power grid
Gas connection costs (if applicable)
Cost of controller if separate from the cogeneration plant
Estimate of the cost savings for power usage.
Estimate of running cost of the unit.
Others as applicable

Presentation
Your report should be prepared on A4 paper and typed wherever possible. Use the
headings I have used above. If preparing plans please fold them to fit the size of an
A4 sheet. (Do not roll up or present in a cylinder) Please staple the assignment on
the top left hand corner or fix in a plastic display folder. Please do not put individual
sheets in plastic pockets.
