Attempt all questions.

Paper 1 has Two Parts I and II. Each question of Part I carries 2 marks and each
question of part II caries 4 marks.

Calculators and log tables are not permitted.

PART I
1.

An electric bulb rated 220 V and 60 W is connected in series with another electric bulb rated 220 V
and 40 W. The combination is connected across 220 volt source of e.m.f. Which bulb will glow more?

2.

A uniform chain of length L and mass M is lying on a smooth table and one-third of its length is
hanging vertically down over the edge of the table. If g is acceleration due to gravity, calculate the
work required to pull the hanging part on to the table.
A long straight wire carries a current of 10 Ampere. An electron travels with a velocity of 5106 m/s
parallel to the wire 0.1m from it and in a direction opposite to the current. What force does the
magnetic field of current exert on the electron?

3.

4.

A ray of light falling at an angle of 50o is refracted through a prism in minimum deviation position. The
o
o
angle of the prism is 60 . Calculate the refractive index of the prism. Given that sin 50 = 0.766.

5.

A block of mass

3 kg is resting on a horizontal plane

(coefficient of static friction = 1 2 3 ). A force F is applied to

the block as shown in the figure. Find the minimum magnitude
of F for which the block begins to slide. (g = 10 m/s2 )

6.

Figure shows a square loop made from a uniform wire. Find the
magnetic field at the centre of the square if a battery is connected
between the points A and C.

7.

Gravitational force between point masses m and M separated by a distance F. Now if a point mass
2m is placed next to m, what will be the (a) force on M due to m. (b) total force on M

8.

A man is running with constant speed along a circular path of

radius 22m. He completes 1 round in 10 second. Find
(a) average velocity in first 2.5 sec.
(b instantaneous speed at 2.5 sec.
(c) average velocity in 20 seconds

9.

A ball is dropped on a floor from a height of 2.0 m. After the collision it rises upto a height of 1.5m.
Assuming that 40% of mechanical energy lost goes as thermal energy into the ball. Calculate the rise
in temperature of the ball in the collision. Specific heat capacity of the ball is 800 J/K. (Take g = 10m/s2)

10.

A person sitting on the top of a tall building is dropping ball at regular intervals of one second. Find
the positions of the 3rd, 4th and 5th ball when the 6th ball is being dropped.

PART II
11.

An empty plastic box of mass m is found to accelerate up at the rate of g/6 when placed deep inside
water. How much sand should be put inside the box so that it may accelerate down at the rate of g/6?

12.

A ball is thrown vertically upward with a velocity 20 m/s. Find the distance covered by the ball is 3sec.

13.

A student performed the experiment of determination of focal length of a concave mirror by u v

method using an optical bench of length 1.5 meter. The focal length of the mirror used is 24 cm. The
maximum error in the location of the image can be 0.2 cm. The 4 sets of (u, v) values recorded by
the student (in cm) are: (42, 56), (48, 48), (66, 33), (78, 39). Find the data set(s) that cannot come
from experiment.

14.

A block of wood floats in a liquid in a beaker with half of its volume (V) submerged under the water. If
the beaker is placed in lift which is going down with deceleration g/2. Find the fraction of volume of
wooden block in water.

15.

Half of a thin convex lens of focal length f and a plane mirror are in contact

as shown. A point object is placed at point O. The real image and virtual
image of the object coincide. What is the distance of the object from the

plane mirror?
