LHP Eco Fair and Plant Sale

On Saturday, January 23, the Lighthouse Point Environmental
Committee sponsored an Eco fair and Plant Sale at McDonough Park.
The Lighthouse Point Environmental Committee, Chaired by Taryn
Palo, is a collective committee made up of The Lighthouse Point
Beautification Committee, Community Wildlife Habitat Project, Master
Gardner Mobile Extension Office and the Lighthouse Point Sprouts
youth organization.
These groups, joining with the Lighthouse Point Garden Club
organized this event to provide local companies with a venue to
display what products and services their companies provide, sell
plants and other items, and how their products and services are used
to help improve and/or protect our environment. In addition, local
community groups attended to raise awareness regarding their efforts
to help protect our environment.
Vendors displayed items like rain barrels,
a car that runs on used cooking oil, green
lawn services, solar energy for your home,
and many other environmentally conscious
products and services. Our Red Fox Diner
brought the food and Vince Alessi provided
the music and, aside from a little rain, it was
an all around good time for everyone.
We plan to bigger and better in 2011!

Teacher Arrested at
John F. Kennedy Airport
A teacher was arrested today at John F. Kennedy
International Airport as he attempted to board a flight
while in possession of a ruler, a protractor, a compass, a
slide-rule and a calculator.
At a morning press conference, the Attorney General
said he believes the man is a member of the notorious Al-
Gebra movement. He did not identify the man, who has
been charged by the FBI with carrying weapons of math
instruction.
“‘Al-Gebra is a problem for us,” the Attorney General said.
“They derive solutions by means and extremes, and
sometimes go off on tangents in search of absolute values.”
They use secret code names like ‘X’ and ‘Y’ and refer to
themselves as “unknowns,” but we have determined that
they belong to a common denominator of the axis of
medieval with coordinates in every country.
As the Greek philanderer Isosceles used to say, ‘There
are 3 sides to every triangle.’
When asked to comment on the arrest, President Obama
said,“If God had wanted us to have better weapons of math
instruction, he would have given us more fingers and toes.”
White House aides told reporters they could not recall a
more intelligent or profound statement by the President.
It is believed that the Nobel Prize for Physics will follow.

AN TI-AGI N G
Ken Rubin and Susan Mosley
Enjoy Fighting the Clock!
By Marla Schwartz

Lighthouse Point residents Kenneth Rubin (born and

raised in Jacksonville) and Susan Motley (a denizen since
1978, hailing from Long Island, NY) are shining examples
of fellow community members who have taken their anti-
aging regimen to an admirable level. Basically, anti-aging
refers to attempts to slow down or reverse the processes
of aging to extend both the maximum and average
lifespan. And these two do it with such grace and
aplomb that when you meet them in person, you’ll
be motivated to do the same.
Personable, humble, decent, considerate and
charming are all good ways to sum up Kenneth and
Susan, a married couple, who met in the early ‘80s
in law school at Nova Southeastern. “There was a
group of students that ran together while we were
in law school and this where we met,” said Ken.
Being someone who came from a familial
background where weight gain seemed to be the
norm, Ken is a person who always took initiative in
taking care of himself. It hasn’t been easy for him,
but he keeps an open mind about his anti-aging
regime and does a splendid job in maintaining it.
“I’ve always had a battle with weight but when I
began to work out with a trainer and began
participating in a nutrition program, this made a big
difference in my anti-aging strategy. I also used to run in you’re assigned a trainer and

of this lovely couple.

Ken started to get
a little nervous, not
wanting people to
think he’s some
nutrition guru,
although Susan, on
the other hand definitely loves the fresh taste of
vegetables.“Don’t tell them about the dinners.”Then they
both laughed. “We do occasionally enjoy pizza, but
otherwise we make healthy eating choices. It’s important
to eat well to stay well.” Susan agreed with this statement.
“We like to go out to dinner with our friends,” Susan said.
“Although over the years we’ve really gotten smarter about
what we eat, once a week, on Sunday, we
enjoy eating real eggs.”
The idea of anti-aging is a simple one in
that it involves taking care of our physical
beings. Nutrition, stress reduction and
exercise such as cardio-vascular condition-
ing and resistance training make for a
first-rate anti-aging environment. Not only
does exercise help your cells stay younger,
there are a whole range of exercise benefits
that will have you feeling younger while
you fight aging. It does seem that Ken and
Susan have mastered an anti-aging
technique that is good for them individually,
as a couple and as responsible citizens of
Lighthouse Point.
The good news is you can stop the clock
because the loss of strength, endurance, flexibility and
balance isn’t inevitable. The National Institute on Aging
believes that, when older people lose their ability to do
things on their own, it doesn't happen just because they’ve
aged. More likely it’s because they’ve become inactive.
Therefore, don’t let inactivity happen to you and if it has,
do something about it now!
Say Fitness is located at 801 S.E. 10th Street, Suite 1 and 2,

Exchange Club of Pompano Beach Child Abuse Prevention

At the January 27, 2010 weekly Exchange Club
meeting, here in Pompano Beach, the club made a special
contribution of $80,000 to be used by the Institute to
reduce debt and provide additional funds to continue
operations and keep existing services available. Larry
Crismond, Board Chair of the Institute and Exchange
Club past President, said that “by reducing the Institute’s
debt, we free up more money to continue offering the
high level of services we provide to the community at
large. We can help more families.”
In addition to child abuse prevention programs, Dr.
Sandy Munoz, Institute CEO, has added pediatric health
services and support to the Institute’s already broad list
of family services. She says that “family health and
prevention of child abuse and neglect go hand in hand.”
Contributions are always welcome. Should you wish Bob O’Conner, Jim Davis, Dr. Sandy Munoz, Lou Perone,

Exciting Innovations at Norcrest School

By Dr. Robert D. Parks

It is my pleasure to share with you some important

news about the educational gem located in our backyard
— Norcrest Elementary School.
Beginning this fall, Norcrest will offer a new, exciting
and innovative Liberal Arts Programme for the Primary
Years that will stress strong academics and high
expectations. This is the first step in Norcrest’s application
process to become a part of the International Bacca-
laureate Primary Years Programme (IB PYP). When
approved as an IB school, Norcrest will join schools in 40
countries in offering students a truly global, real world
education. IB schools are recognized and highly respected
internationally by colleges and universities as unique in
providing a challenging academic program. IB schools
educate the whole child so that every student becomes an

inquirer, both in the classroom and in the world.
Norcrest students, at each grade level, will explore six
projects focusing on themes of global importance.
• Who we are
• Where we are in place and time
• How we express ourselves
• How the world works
• How we organize ourselves
• Sharing the planet
Each project will incorporate language arts, mathe-
matics, science, physical education, foreign language,
health, music and art. Students will complete each theme
through hands-on experiences and will be
given ample time to reflect on what they learn.
