Phase I: August 17-18

Welcome to the GTA Workshop! Since 1991 Virginia

Tech has conducted the Graduate Teaching Assistant
Workshop (GRAD 5004). It is a mandatory pass/fail
course required of all new GTAs, designed to
provide recommendations and advice from
dedicated faculty, staff, and experienced
graduate students and to assist GTAs in developing
as teachers. The covered topics and material also aim
at the development of the knowledge base and skills
of future faculty members and aspiring professional
practitioners.

August 17: 1-4:30pm

Colonial Hall, Squires Student Center

This course can also be used towards the Future

Professoriate Certificate for students intending to
become university educators.
(see: graduateschool.vt.edu/gs/tge/fp_courses).
The GTA workshop has two phases (schedule for each
phase follows within this brochure and is on the courses
Canvas site):
Phase I: Two four-hour workshops, mandatory for
all GTA workshop participants, held in Squires
Student Center and the Graduate Life Center.
Phase II: Several sessions of 1.5 h (you will select
three), typically late afternoon, mostly in the
Graduate Life Center, throughout the semester.
Participants are required to attend one session on
Ethics and two other sessions on Teaching Techniques
and Skills to complete this phase.
The course communication, resources, assignments,
and grading will occur via the Canvas website. Students
enrolled in the course will be automatically enrolled into
this site in mid-August. All students are expected to use
the Canvas site to view announcements, assignments,
