1. Deduce the current I in the circuit shown in figure1. All the resistances are in ohms.

2. (a) Derive an expression for measurement of power and p.f. in 3-φ system with
balanced load using two wattmeter method.
(b) Two watt meters are connected to measure the input to the balanced 3-φ
circuits indicate 2500w and 500 w respectively. Find the p. f . of the circuit.
i. when both the readings are positive
ii. when the latter reading is obtained after reversing the connection to the
current coil Draw the connection diagram and phasor diagram of the cir-
cuit. [6+10]

3. (a) With neat sketches, explain the construction and functions of the various parts
of a d.c. machine.
(b) Calculate the emf generated by a 6 pole lap wound armature with 65 slots and
12 conductors per slot, when driven at 1000 rpm. The flux/pole is 0.02 Wb.

4. (a) A 460V dc series motor runs at 500rpm taking a current of 40A. Calculate
the speed and percentage change in torque if the load is reached so that the
motor is taking 30A. The total resistance of the armature and field circuit is
0.8V. Assume that flux is proportional to the field current.
(b) a 250V, 4 pole series motor has 2 circuit wave wound winding with 105 slots,
each containingg 12 conductors. The gap flux pole is 0.02 wb when the motor

is on full load and taking a current of 45A. The armature and field resistance
are 0.02 Ω and 0.12 Ω respectively and iron and frictional losses total 700W.
Calculate
i. shaft torque
ii. B.H.P. [8+8]

5. (a) How do you classify the transformers based on constructions and why the
Transformer core is laminated.
(b) A250/500V transformer gave the following test results:
Short circuit test : 20V; 12A, 100Watts on HV side
Open circuit test: 250V, 1A, 80Watts on LV side
Calculate the efficiency when the output is 10A , 500V and 0.8 power factor
lagging. [6+10]

6. (a) Explain the rotating magnetic field developed in an Induction Motor.


(b) A12 pole 3- phase alternator coupled to an engine running at 500rpm. It
supplies an induction motor which has a full load speed of 1440rpm. Find the
% slip and the number of poles of the motor. [9+7]

7. (a) Explain Pessimistic method of finding regulation of a given alternator.


(b) The effective resistance of a 2200V, 50Hz, 440KVA, 1-phase alternator is 0.5
Ohms. On short circuit a field current of 40 Amps gives the full load current of
200Amps. The EMF on open circuit with the same field excitation is 1160V.
Calculate
i. Synchronous impedance
ii. Synchronous reactance
iii. % regulation at 0.707 PF leading [8+8]

8. (a) Sketch and describe the construction of a moving coil ammeter and give the
principle of operation.
(b) A moving coil instrument gives full scale deflection with 15mA and has a
resistance of 5Ω. Calculate the resistance of the necessary components in
order that the instrument may be used as
i. a 2A - Ammeter
ii. a 100V voltmeter. [8+8]

1. (a) Deduce an expression for star to delta transformation.


(b) In the shown figure1Find the equivalent resistance between A and B using

2. (a) Voltage of V=Vm Sin ω t is impressed across R-C series circuit. Give the
expression for current and power.
(b) A tungsten filament bulb rated at 500W, 100V is to be connected to series
with a capacitance across 200V, 50Hz supply. Calculate
i. the value of capacitor such that the voltage and power consumed by the
bulb are according to the rating of the bulb
ii. the power factor of the current drawn from the supply and
iii. draw the phasor diagram of circuit. [8+8]

speed when loaded and taking current of 50A if armature reaction weakens

1. (a) Derive the formula for magnetic force of a long straight conductor.
(b) A current of 15A is passing along a straight wire. Calculate the force on a
unit magnetic pole placed 0.15 m from the wire. [10+6]

2. (a) Two Voltage shapes are expressed by,


i. e = 300 Sin θ
ii. e = 300 Cos θ
Determine their instantaneous values at the following values of
θ; 300 , 450 , 600 , 1200 , 2700
(b) Three voltages represented by the following equations:
e1 = 15Sin̟t; e2 = 5Sin(̟t+π/6); e3 = 10Cos(̟t);
act together in an a.c. circuit .Represent these voltages by phasors and cal-
culate an expression for the resultant voltage. Check the result so obtained
graphically. [6+10]

4. (a) A dc motor takes an armature current of 110A at 480V. The armature cir-
cuit resistance is 0.22 Ω . The machine has 6poles and the armature is lap-
connected with 864 conductors. The flux/pole is 0.05 wb. Calculate the gross
torque developed by the motor.
(b) A 100H.P 500v shunt motor has 4 poles and a 2 circuit wave winding with
492 armature conductors, the flux is 50 mwb/pole and the full load efficiency
92%. The armature and commutating field winding have a total resistance of
0.1ohm. The shunt field resistance is 250 Ω. Calculate for full load
i. the speed
ii. the useful torque. [6+10]

5. (a) Derive the emf equation of a I-ph Transformer.

(b) In 25KVA, 2000/200V, single phase Transformer, the Iron and full-load copper
losses are 50 W and 400 W respectively, caluculate the efficiency at unity power
factor.
i. full load and
ii. half full-load [8+8]

6. Explain about Delta/Delta connection of Transformers in detail A500 -KVA, 3-


phase 50 Hgs Transformer has a voltage Ratio (line voltages) of 33/11 KV and
is Delta/Star connected. The resistances per phase are : High voltage 35Ω, low
voltage 876 Ω and the Iron loss is 3050 W. Calculate the efficiency at full load and
one-half of full load respectively

(a) at unity PF
(b) 0.8 PF. [16]

7. (a) Explain the calculation part of %regulation after conducting OC and SC tests
using EMF method.
(b) 100KVA , 3KV, 50Hz, 3-phase star connected alternator has effective arrma-
ture resistance of 0.2 Ohms . The field current of 30Amps produces SC current
of 180 Amps and an OC volts of 1060V (line value). Calculate the full load
voltage regulation at 0.707 PF lag and 0.8PF leading. Draw the phaser dia-
gram. [8+8]

8. Two wattmeters connected to measure the input to a balanced three phase circuit
indicate 2500W and 500W respectively. Find the power factor of the circuit.

(a) when both readings are positive and

current coil of one instrument. Draw the phasor and connection diagrams.[16]

1. Calculate the unknown resistance R and the current flowing through it when the

2. (a) Deduce the relationship between the phase and line voltage in a 3-φ
i. star and
ii. delta connected circuits.
(b) A 3-φ , 400 V, star connected alternator supplies a 3-φ , 112 Kw mesh- con-
nected induction motor of efficiency and p.f. 0.88 and 0.86 respectively. Find
the current
i. in each phase
ii. in each generator lphase and
iii. active and reactive components of currents in each case. [8+8]

5. (a) Explain the principle of operation of a 1- phase transformer


(b) A single phase transformer has 400 primary and 1000 secondary turns. The net
constructional area of the core is 60 cm2 . If the primary winding is connected
to a 50Hz supply at 520V. Calculate
i. Peak value of flux density in the core.
ii. Voltage induced in the secondary winding.
iii. Transformation ratio.
iv. EMF induced per turn in both the windings. [8+8]

6. (a) How do you classify the induction motors. Give the constructional details of
them.
(b) Define slip and give an account of the quantities which vary with slip. [8+8]

7. (a) Discuss the construction, and principle of operation of a 3-phase synchronous


generator.
(b) A 3-phase, star-connected, round-motor synchronous generator, rated at 10
KV A, and 230 V has synchronous reactance of 1.2 ohms per phase, and an
armature resistance of 0.5 ohms per phase. Calculate the percentage voltage
regulation at full load with
i. 0.8 lagging p.f.
ii. 0.8 leading p.f. [8+8]
