Editorial
In the present context, when based on the
basal Knowledge tradition, search for new
knowledge and researches are taking place,
physical and intellectual resources are felt quite
necessary. Karnataka Janapada Vishwavidyalaya
is busy with the motif of collecting, preserving
and developing the indigenous knowledge while
becoming a source in itself for such knowledge
systems. It is a known fact to you all that HANATE,
the news letter of the University is formed with an
intention of making the academic and research
activities taking place in the University reach the
common folk, scholars, and the Government. In
the period of first three months of the year 2014,
many special programmes have been organized.
The organization of the 21st National Conference
of FOSSILS, when the release of the calendar and
the diary of the University took place, is an
important milestone in the history of the
University. Equally important are the two other
National Seminars namely Higher Education and
Inclusive Karnataka and Higher Education and
Rural Development that were held on the
campus, threw new light on the aspects of
application of folklore to the contemporary
needs. This issue of HANATE consists of the
reports of various programmes along with the
photos there of. The programmes that took place
were: Welcoming of students of 2013-14 batch,
National Folk Dance Workshop, competition and
discussion programme on Rangoli and Hase,
Janapada Deeparadhane (Folkloristic Lamp
Adoration programme) in collaboration with
Vishwapratishthana of Uttara Kannada,
academic as well as cultural activities held in the
Regional study centres of the University, Ph.D.
research workshop, Pattanga and other
academic activities. Totally the University is
gaining confidence by formulating and executing
the ambitious projects and programmes. I would
like to bring it your kind attention that the cooperation of the public, associations, government
as well as scholars is instrumental in achieving
the expected level of success.
Sessions
Various technical sessions such as the following
were organized on the occasion: Native Knowledge
Tradition, Rural and Tribal Event Management,
Production in Rural and Tribal Cultures and
Sustainable Development and other Folkloristic
fields. In all these sessions there were serious
discussions and debates.
Innumerable scholars attended the conference.
The following specialists in their respective
areas presented their scholarly papers. Dr. T.
Satyanarayan, Sri Mani P., Dr. Jyotsna Chandrakant,
Dr. Gourish, Dr. Sujata Akki, Prof. Krishna Reddy,
L.Srinivas Dappu, Dr. P. Nazeemuddin, Deepesh V.K.
Dr. Rajalakshmi Achat, A.G. Arumkhan, M.
Somarajendra, Dr. G.Vijaya, Dr. C.T. Guruprasad, Sri K.
Balaji Nayak, Sri Ravi, Dr. M. Unnikrishnan, Smt Meera
H.N., Rajashri Patil, etc.
Senior Folklore Scholar Dr. Raghavan Payyanad
delivered a lecture on Applicability of Folklore Data
and Linguistic Analysis, Dr. O. Mutthaiah, Dr.
Purushottama Bilimale, Prof. H.M Maheshwaraiah,
Dr. N. Bhaktavatsala Reddy, Dr. Sujata Akki and many
other luminaries chaired many technical sessions.
Smt Arpana Hegde compered the programme.
Dr. Bharathi Maravanthe, Smt Vijayalakshmi
Getiyavar, Sri. Prakash Hosamani attended the
sessions.
Valedictory Function
Prof. N. Bhaktavatsala Reddy, Director, Institute of
Folklore Studies, Tirupati, who presided over the
valedictory programme opined that Karnataka
Janapada Vishwavidyalaya campus witnessed the
successful organization of National Conference of
FOSSILS which threw light on possibilities of new
searches and study in the field of Folklore. He added,
he enjoyed the unforgettable moments in the
conference.

Valedictory Programme
Prof. Ambalike Hiriyanna, Honble ViceChancellor presided over inaugural function and said
it is a matter of pleasure that the Siddi tribe is
identifying itself with the mainstream while retaining
their traditional art forms. Prof. D.B. Naik expressed
his concern that in contemporary days of
modernization, globalization and the influence of
modern media, folk arts are disappearing fast. Prof.
S.C. Ramesh, Registrar (Evaluation), addressed the
participants. Sri Y. Vidyanand Singh of Manipur a
renowned Manipuri dancer participated in the
programme as a chief guest and addressed the
assembly. Halakki harvest dance artist, Sri Ganapa
Gowda shared his views.
Sri N. Mohankumar sang the prayer song. Kumari
Shwetha M.B. Organizing Secretary of the Workshop
welcomed. Smt. Abhinaya H. Compered the
programme. Dr. K. Premakumara, Sri K.N. Chandu,
artist Sri Santhosh Siddi, teaching and non-teaching
staff of the University were present in the
programme.

Valedictory Programme
The valedictory programme of Traditional
Rangoli art and Panel Discussion was held on the 21st
March 2014. Sri Junjanna, District Publicity Officer
Haveri, was the chief guest.
Prof. Ambalike Hiriyanna, Honble ViceChancellor of Karnataka Janapada Vishwavidyalaya
presided over the function. Prof. S.C. Ramesh,
Registrar (Evln) opined that folk rangoli art increases
creativity.

Seminar
A Seminar on Folklore Museums was organized in
the campus. Sri U.S. Ramanna presided over the
function. The scholars delivered speeches. Dr. Kuruva
Basavaraju talked on the topic Folklore Museums:
Various Concepts. Smt Leelavati N.B. Jayasheela talked
on the topic Collection of Folkloristic Items: Some
Problems.
Award Ceremony
Valedictory Ceremony
Dr. Gayathri Devi, former professor of Institute of
Social and Economic Change, urged the researchers
to emphasise and concentrate on inter-disciplinary
and multi-disciplinary levels. She was the main
speaker at the valedictory function of the National
Seminar.
Prof. S.C. Ramesh, Registrar (Evln), presided over
the function and said, We may draw more morals
from the oral folk literature. He further said, We may
also learn the lesson of action and ways of the world
from folktales. Prof. M. Chandra Poojary was present
on the platform.

Commitment of artists is essential for the
preservation of folk culture Pichchalli Srinivas
Sri Pichchalli Srinivasa a famous folk song singer
of Malur of Kolar District said, The greater
responsibility of preserving the basic folk arts,
literature and culture and also the tradition is on the
shoulders of artists He spoke these words at
Nagandige auditorium as chief guest of the
programme Tingala Atithioandige Pattanga -15
organized by Karnataka Janapada Vishwavidyalaya
on the 31st January, 2014. He also said with a note of
sorrow, In the context of globalization basic folk arts,
literature, culture and traditions are disappearing
fast.

List of Programmes
On the 25th February 2014 the result of First Semester M.A. Folk
Literature, Folkloristics, Folk Tourism, Folk Arts, and Folk
Communication courses were announced. In the same way Third
Semester M.A. Folk Literature and Folkloristics results were also
announced.
From the 10th March, to the 19th March 2014 First Semester
Examinations of M.B.A. Department were held in the campus of the
university quite systematically and transparently.

words from his presidential chair of the programme
