Indian store owner foils robbery bid

Swati Sharma

Although what Patel did was a brave act

it could have turned into an unfortunate
incident. Patel says, I knew that and that
is why I didnt want to fight with him. I was
ready to give him the money or whatever he
wanted. I didnt want to risk my life.
But when he climbed up the counter,
I was sure that I can fight and be safe at
the same time, considering the distance
between the gun and me. I did it because I
knew I could do it.
He was holding onto me and we went
flying down, Patel says.
The wrestling that ensued ended in
Patel pulling the rifle from the man. The
offender lost his mask and ran outside the
store where his other mate was waiting for
him in a silver-coloured car. He jumped
into the car and it sped away.
Patel said that he has moved to Hamilton
just three to four months back and has lived
in Auckland before. Although his family
was at home, they werent aware of what
was happening in the store. They were a
little scared to know about the incident but
now they are fine. This area, they say, is one
of the safest and the neighbours say that
such incidents have never happened in the

n Indian-origin businessman in
Hamilton foiled a robbery attempt
at his store when he wrestled a
masked gunman and chased him away.
Indian Weekender spoke to the brave
man and asked him what was going
through his mind.
Rupan Patel was working alone at his
convenience store in Hamilton towns
Hukanui road when the incident took
place. It was a quiet day and I was sitting
in the corner. Suddenly a man with a big
gun ran into the store.
The man entered Patels shop and
ordered him to put all the money in a bag.
The moment I saw him with a gun, only
one thing was in my mind Ill do whatever
you want. I didnt want to fight him
because when it comes to safety, money
doesnt matter.
Patel said while he was struggling
to open the till containing money, the
impatient offender first tried to get inside
the counter from the entrance on the side
and then tried to climb over the counter.
I wanted to grab the gun and that was
when I saw a chance, says Patel.

Love, light, festivities and the controversy

While the Auckland Diwali festival is growing in strength and numbers every year, why is it being targeted?
Is it the opinion of the larger community or self-proclaimed community leaders with hidden agendas?
iwk bureau

he Auckland Diwali website states,

Tens of thousands of Aucklanders
of all ages turn out each year for the
Auckland Diwali Festival. The festival is a
celebration of Aucklands ethnic diversity
and a chance to enjoy and experience
traditional and contemporary Indian
culture in its many exciting forms.
This alcohol-free, smoke-free festival is
family friendly. It offers festival goers the
chance to see live dance, music, puppet and
theatre performances, see exhibitions and
attend workshops, including workshops for
kids, along with storytelling, amusement
rides and games. This is Aucklands largest
vegetarian festival, where people can
sample the flavours of India fresh from a
host of street food stalls.
The event is rounded off with a fireworks
display on Sunday evening.
As a migrant Indian, when I read this,
I am filled with pride at the thought of
my culture being celebrated by tens of
thousands of people in a land away from
my home country. My heart is also filled
with pride to be a part of a country that so
willingly embraces the different cultures
that make up the fabric of this land.
Speaking to a large number of members
of the community, I realised that this is
exactly how most people felt. However,
there seem to be certain self-proclaimed
community leaders that are trying their
best to jeopardise this for everyone.
The general consensus from the

community seems to be that

the festival that is called the Auckland
Diwali Festival is actually two whole days
of celebrating the Indian culture at a large
scale. Where else do you see Indian artists
being showcased on a stage so big? Where

else do you find

Indian
culinary
artists
being
showcased at this
scale? When else
do you hear of
Queen Street in
the heart of the
city, being closed
off to savour the
flavour of Indian
street food and
street performances? What
better way to integrate the Indian diaspora
into the mainstream?
The festival has become a way for all
family and friends to spend time together
while immersing themselves in their
culture. We have seen scores of Indian
families bringing along their friends from

other cultures to come and share a slice of

our culture.
Auckland has seen this festival grow
from strength to strength, year after year
and the participation of ATEED and the
Council get stronger and stronger.
Nowhere in their own description of the
festival does ATEED refer to this festival
as religious. None of the thousands of
people participating in the festival attend
this in the name of religion. While India
itself boasts of being a secular state, history
has it, that some power hungry people have
used religion to divide the country. It now
seems that such influences are beginning
to surface here in this peaceful land of
Aotearoa. This needs to be checked. Also,
the aggressive path all this bickering and
complaining is beginning to take could
lead to Auckland losing its biggest and the
much-loved Indian showcase. It may be
pertinent to remind such self-appointed
leaders that this festival has now, for years,
brought people of all religions, cultures and
ethnicities together and it is the thread of
our culture that keeps the entire festival
together. Creating a rift in this celebration
of the Indian culture creates a blotch on the
entire community.
The festival this year has been
announced on October 17 and 18. This falls
almost at the end of Navratri and right in
the middle of the festival season. Indian
Weekender took this aspect of the festival
to the community and we also asked what
they thought of the festival in general and
here is what people had to say:

ATEED does a fantastic job in organising Auckland Diwali
each year. Some issues has been raised regarding dates of
celebrations for 2015 Diwali. ATEED has responded positively
to these issues and assured increased consultation towards
future events. I hope all of us living in Auckland will enjoy
Diwali celebrations as always organised by ATEED.
Vinod Kumar
President - HOTA Forum
ATEED have agreed to work with us from here on. They
have also asked us to respect what they have done so far and
will not be easy to change this year but more than willing to
allow our input next year. Remember this has been going on
for last more than 10 years. ATEED has got NO intention to
damage our culture, they have AGREED to include us in the
decision process. Also, this is the only event that I know of
where part of Queen Street is closed. What does that tell us?
Auckland Diwali is huge and takes months to plan. Having worked with Auckland
Transport, they ask for traffic plans and H&S and input by traffic police. It is NOT a
small task and I have been there and done it. It takes a lot of meetings. It is not an
overnight thing.
Only 20 years ago Diwali used to come and go. And we would not know it has come
and gone. Today non-Indians remind us. At least those kids NOT born in India have
started to know Diwali. Although it is NOT how and what we want but we have made
this aware to nearly all the people of Auckland.
Roshan Nauhria
President, Bharatiya Mandir
The Auckland Diwali festival is an excellent opportunity to
showcase the Indian Community and our culture to the wider
community. ATEED do a great job in organising it and the
festival has grown before our eyes becoming widely popular.
They have never referred to it as a religious festival and
people gather together irrespective of religion, caste, creed
and colour. While the Indian community needs to be able to
participate in its organising and planning, it is incorrect to
try and raise controversies and demolish the hard work that
they do in organising the festival. We hope that this festival
continues to grow and develop year after year.

Auckland Councils initiative is very welcoming.

Celebrating Diwali is one way of promoting Indian culture and
acknowledging the contribution of the Indian community in
New Zealands society. It hardly matters when and what day
it is celebrated as long as it is celebrated. There is no need to
bring politics into the celebrations.

It is nice to see Auckland Council celebrating our Indian

festival. In a multicultural society, when an event relating to our
culture takes place, it becomes easy for others to understand
us better. Last year many of my non-Indian friends, who came
to the event, enjoyed themselves. Rather than pointing out
mistakes or errors in the event, people should come out in open
and be a part of the celebration. Date and time of the event
hardly matters.
Jitinder Singh

Karthik
It is really heartening that such an event is being held in
Auckland. Being far away from home, I thought I will miss
Diwali this year but this celebration hopefully will make me feel
at home. Whoever is opposing this event, I think is doing it to
get cheap publicity.

Sai Ram
Being this far away from home, any opportunity to socialise
with our own people is something to look forward to. Festival
is only an alibi for coming together and enjoying. I feel politics
should be kept strictly away from this event. Opposing for the
sake of opposing will show our community in poor light.

Orange

This kind of event really helps people understand our

culture. It will be easy for people from other culture and
nationality to identify us through such events. It is not just
an advertisement for our culture but also a way to strengthen
the bonding between Indians in New Zealanders. People who
generally would associate themselves with different states of
India will come together and be identified as only Indians on
that day. All I can say to people who are opposing this event
is not to politicise the issue and make Indians look divided in
front of others.
Govind Singh
First of all we should all thank Auckland Council for
organising an event for our community. On Diwali, we have a
public holiday in India and everyone gets together to celebrate
but here in New Zealand, Diwali is just any other day in the
office for everyone. Therefore, it doesnt matter to me if the
event is taking place on the actual day of Diwali or not. The
only thing that matters is that someone is spending time and
energy to organise this event for us.

Annie
Auckland Council cant celebrate all Indian festivals. It
has chosen Diwali and has been celebrating it in a big way for
many years now. We should be thankful to Auckland Council
for taking such an initiative. I dont care what day the event is
celebrated as long as it is on the weekend when all can go to the
designated place and be a part of the event.

Sandeep Singh Minhas

Joy
This event reflects the multicultural mindset of Auckland
Council. To people who are opposing this event, all I want to ask
is how many countries or cities around the world celebrate our
festivals? Does India celebrate any of New Zealands festival or
event in this grand fashion? Being a spoilsport is just a way of
seeking attention and publicity.

Black

Suppose the event is held on a weekday, who would be able

to attend it in the first place? Auckland Council is a responsible
organisation and they would have thought about pros and cons
before finalising the dates. I wonder if people opposing this
event even understand the real essence of Diwali because if
they really did, they wouldnt be obstructing this event.

I stay in North shore where Indian community is not
big. When events such as these take place, you dont feel
left our culturally in the society. Auckland Council is
being generous and we should definitely thank them for
conducting this event year after year.
I feel there is no need to bring politics into such
matters, and I hope people who are opposing this event
show maturity and responsibility. If they feel that by
opposing an event such as this will make them bigger
personality in the community, they are wrong.

This event shows that this country cares for us
and respects our culture. Auckland Council should
be congratulated for holding the event. To be honest,
they really dont have to be doing it in the first place. If
they dont organise this event, no one will blame them.
Rather than disrupting them we should thank them and
celebrate with all the communities in the city.

Harsh Rami
Every other flight that lands in Aucklands airport
has at least one Indian in it no matter where it is coming
from. With so many Indians living in Auckland, its a
nice gesture by Auckland Council to hold such an event.
Diwali is one festival that is celebrated by all Indians.
I see no reason why it cant be celebrated earlier
keeping in mind the convenience of people of the city.
Politicising the issue will show a lack of understanding
within our own community.

The Wellington branch is located in the

capitals busy Lambton Quay. The building
is rich in history and is a popular stop on
the itineraries of walking tours of the city.
Its shopping arcade has a variety of stores

Though weve had requests from

out, says Relianz Forex Director Giri

offer our same high standards of service

Relianz has six branches throughout the

$20,000 grant to study AngloIndian diaspora in NZ

PICTURE STORY

researcher has been awarded a

$20,000 grant from the Asia New
Zealand Foundation to study the
Anglo-Indian diaspora in New Zealand.
Anglo-Indians, an Indian minority
community, have been migrating to New
Zealand since at least the early 20th
century, yet they continue to be almost
entirely overlooked in accounts of Indians
in New Zealand, Scoop Independent
News quoted social anthropologist Robyn
Andrews as saying. Andrews research
project, The invisible Indian: The AngloIndia Diaspora in New Zealand, seeks
to contact as many Anglo-Indians in New
Zealand as possible to build up a picture of
this Indian minority.
Andrews from Massey Universitys
School of People, Environment and
Planning said that although only 327 New
Zealanders were identified as Anglo-Indian
in the 2013 census, there are likely to be
many more.
Some may not even know they have
Anglo-Indian origin, or they may choose
to identify as New Zealander rather than
Indian, she added.
Andrews is also the author of Christmas
in Calcutta, a book of Anglo-Indian stories,
memoirs and essays that portray the diverse
lives and socio-economic positions of the
Anglo-Indian community in Kolkata.

Indian students arrival in NZ on the rise

growing number of Indian

students arrival in New Zealand
has bolstered the countrys annual
net migration figure to a new record.
According to Statistics New Zealand, the
countrys annual permanent and long-term
migration showed a record net gainthe
number of arrivals over departures
of 59,600 migrants till July this year,
resulting from 1,17,100 arrivals and 57,500
departures, Xinhua reported. The figure was
boosted by students from India and China,

according to stuff.co.nz. The website said

that after Australia, the next biggest group of
migrants was from India, with three-quarters
on student visa.
The arrival of Indians increased 56 per
cent to 13,800, with 75 per cent having
student visas. The growing number of Indian
students reflects a stronger Indian economy
and visa rules allowing students to work
while studying in New Zealand, stuff.co.nz
cited Wellington Institute of Technology
chief executive Chris Gosling as saying.

Indian students often applied to stay on

but they still had to meet the immigration
skills shortlist, he added. July also set a
record with the highest ever monthly net
gain in migrants at 5,700, surpassing the
previous record of 5,400 migrants set this
year in January.
The influx of migrants would put a strain
on all public services, including hospitals,
and demand for housing, especially in
the overheated market of Auckland, the
opposition New Zealand First party said.

Graduate nurses find jobs sooner

New 10-year NZ
passports to come early
IWK Bureau

iwis will now be able to

apply/renew for their
10-year passports from
November 30, the Government
Administration Select Committee
said in its report on 10-year
adult passports.
Subject to legislation passing
in Parliament, adults planning
for their Christmas holidays will
be able to apply for a 10-year
passport at the end of November,
one month earlier than originally
planned, said Internal Affairs
Minister Peter Dunne.
The increase in the validity
of the passport came about
earlier this year when the cabinet
approved the return of 10-year
passports. Kiwi passport holders
can visit approximately 170
countries without applying for a
visa, and the increased validity
will offer more convenience to
adults, as passports will now
to have to be renewed less
frequently. However, a childs
passport will remain valid only for
five years, as a childs appearance
can significantly change over

time, stated Mr Dunne. He further

said, ...This will also result in a
reduction in the annual average
price of an adult passport for New
Zealanders. The 10-year adult
passport price will cost $180
(including GST), an average saving
of $90 over the 10-year validity
period (the average price of two
five year adult passports over ten
years including one renewal is
approximately $270).
We want 70 per cent of the
most
common
transactions
with government to be able to
be done online by 2017. Online
passport renewals are one of those
transactions, with more than 40
per cent of adult renewals already
submitting
their
application
online. We are looking to extend
the online service to child renewals
and first-time adult applicants in
the future.
Since the first day of application
is November 30, New Zealanders
with passports expiring before the
end of the month wont be able
to apply for a 10-year one. If they
apply before the date, they will
receive a five-year passport.

last year. The statistics show that
a year on from July 2014s ACE
round, a mere 13 of 482 graduates
are still on a search for positions

through ACE, a significant success

rate seen. New Zealand needs
more nurses over the coming
years, as more senior nurses will
begin to retire, and with a growing
and aging population, the skills
of nurses are needed more than
ever in our communities, said
Dr Coleman. The government

Highlighting work safety issues in NZ

David Shearer
Labour PM

ew Zealand has one of the worlds

highest work accident rates, twice
the death rate of Australia and six
times the death rate of the UK.
Every accident is a tragedy, involving an
individual, a family and a whole lot of worry
and disruption.
Its also expensive. New Zealand
taxpayers currently foot the bill for $3.5
billion in accident costs every year.
Everyone agrees our health and safety
legislation is well overdue for reform. And
it is being reformedwith one glaring
exception. One third of all workplace
accidents occur in agriculture. Its only
right then, that agriculture should have the
same regulations as every other industry.

But the government has bowed to

pressure from farmers and some small
businesses. Strong lobbying has seen beef,
sheep and dairy farming excluded from the
requirement to have a health and safety
representative on the team at work.
The extraordinary result is that wormfarming, butterfly-farming and curtainhanging are considered dangerous enough
to need a health and safety representative,
but sheep and cattle farming are not
considered dangerous and wont be
required to have one.
Its become a farcical situation.
Why is it important to have a health and
safety representative in every workplace
that requests one?
As Pike River and other accidents show,
if health and safety is left in the hands
of employers, some will prioritise their
bottom line over safe practice, potentially
cutting corners and pushing workers into
dangerous situations.
Research shows that having a designated
person who knows the risks of the job, can
ensure that staff do their jobs safely, with

the right equipment, follow the correct

procedures of the job, and dont put their
lives at risk.
The decision by the government to
change what could have been an otherwise
positive piece of legislation shows the splits
and factions within the National party.
Some wanted it to go ahead intact, while
the group led by Judith Collins opposed it.
So not only did farmers put pressure on the
government, but one faction was allowed to
dominate the National party, turning the

law around. I dont believe its acceptable

for New Zealand to continue having
one of the highest accident rates in the
Western world.
Nor is it sustainable for taxpayers to
continue footing the bill for a sector that
sees itself as above the law.
We should be able to expect better
from the National government than what
weve seen this week: they simply rolled
over when one of their lobby groups gave
the command.

An infrastructure plan to support a

growing economy
Kanwaljit Bakshi
National List MP

nfrastructure supports much of our

daily livesits the roads we drive on,
the schools our children learn in and it
delivers our electricity and water. It is a key
driver of the economy, and public services.
A solid infrastructure platform ensures
high-quality social services such as

education and health are fit for purpose,

inspires confidence that businesses have
reliable access to the right infrastructure,
and makes a difference in New
Zealanders lives.
New Zealand has a good national
infrastructure base, bolstered by investment
in recent years. But over the next 30 years
we face some big challenges. Some ageing
infrastructure networks will need renewing.
Our schools are 42 years old on average,
and parts of the water network are more
than 100 years old.
Demand for infrastructure will also
change. The population is ageing. Some
of our regions will grow as the population

increases by 1.2 million by 2045, but a

few are expected to shrink. Thats why
weve launched the 2015 Thirty Year New
Zealand Infrastructure Plan, which sets
out the Governments response to these
infrastructure challenges.
The plan outlines 145 initiatives to
strengthen how we look after our assets and
improve understanding of what services
the population needs, so we deliver the
right infrastructure programmes to meet
that need.
These initiatives include developing
national shared data standards for roads,
water and buildings. Common data then
needs to be turned into information that

Give our children a decent home

Barry Coates
Green Party

he governments refusal to set

minimum standards for rental
homes is causing New Zealand
children to get sick or die from cold, damp
housing. With a shortage of affordable
rental accommodation, families are having
to take whatever is on offer, even if it risks
making their children sick. No parent
should be put in this position.
The recent case of a child with lung
damage, Isiah Wensor, living in a mouldy
house has highlighted the poor standards

of many Housing New Zealand properties.

The house was so riddled with mould and
damp that one of the internal walls gave
way. The poor standard of the house had
been highlighted to Housing New Zealand
on several occasions but nothing had
been done.
This followed the tragic case of a twoyear-old child whose death was linked to
damp and cold housing.
The coroners report into the toddlers
death said the poor condition of the state
house in the South Auckland suburb of
Otara was a contributing factor to EmmaLita Bournes death.
The problem is not only state houses, but
all rental properties. More than one million
adults and 418,000 children (around one
quarter of all children) live in rental houses.
Currently when houses are rented, there
are no standards for adequate warmth

and dryness. The cost of retro-fitting a

standard New Zealand house with floor and
ceiling insulation and a heat pump would
cost only about $5,000 and would last for
1520 years.
Despite evidence of the links between
damp houses and health problems, the
government has refused to set minimum
standards for warm, dry and safe houses. The
Green Party is calling for a comprehensive,
transparent warrant of fitness system to
apply to all rental properties.
The governments argument is that
implementing a minimum standard for safe
housing would cost landlords money. But
the current costs of ill-health are far higher,
not only for those who suffer poor health,
but also school and work absenteeism, and
the costs to the public health system from
treating respiratory problems, infectious
diseases and rheumatic fever.

decision-makers can relate to and use to

make better decisions. These 145 steps will
drive better use of existing infrastructure
and better allocation of new investment.
Infrastructure is expensivecentral and
local government combined are expected
to spend $11 billion on infrastructure each
year for the next 10 years, including the
land transport programme and the rollout of Ultra-Fast Broadband and the Rural
Broadband Initiative. We need to get the
best value we can from this spend.
National is committed to supporting a
thriving economy with modern, sustainable
infrastructureand this plan will help us do
just that.

According to the New Zealand Institute

of Economic Research (NZIER) our rental
housing standards are amongst the lowest
in the world, but also tenants have few
rights and can be forced to move with little
notice. This contributes to renters moving
each two years on average, meaning that
children lack a stable and secure home. The
Green Party would strengthen the rights
of tenants for renewal of leases and limit
rent increases.
Home is important to all of us, but
especially to vulnerable children. Where
they live has a huge influence on their
health and well-being. They need a safe,
warm, secure and stable home. We can do
far better to give children the start in life
that they deserve.

Infrastructure
Plan
announced last week, Mayor Len
Brown says he supports the governments
desire to work closely together on this.
The $110 billion plan contains 145
initiatives designed to help the country cope

with ageing infrastructure, and increasing

pressures from a growing population,
and was unveiled by Finance Minister Bill
English at the New Zealand Council for
Infrastructure conference.
The ministers comments regarding
working together rather than in silos are on
the money. Central and local government
need to work in close collaboration to
deliver the best outcomes for Auckland and
New Zealand, says Len Brown.
He says that the suggestion tocharge
those who use infrastructure underlines his
call for a motorway toll in Auckland to help

Road pricing is not a revenue gathering
exercise but rather an essential tool
to help decongest Auckland roads and
fund infrastructure including road, says
the Mayor.
Im looking forward to the next step
which is the signing of an Auckland
Transport Accord with the government to
finally agree on our programme, timing and
delivery of funding.

is the natural hub of

desire to take a leading role in
multilateral forums to advance
the interests of the Pacific nations
at the Forum for India-Pacific

Jaipur, India.
Addressing the Indian Prime

Fiji is ideally placed to host the

the Pacific Islands Development

in our history, our doors are open
to the region and the world. And we
offer our services to help empower
all Pacific peoples and have their
voices heard. Prime Minister Modi,

you have the great honour to lead

the worlds biggest democracy and
a major power on the global stage.
We in the Pacific look to India to
take a greater lead in resolving the
great challenges of our time. Which
is why Fiji is strongly supporting
Indias bid to become a Permanent
Member of the United Nations

For our part, we have the
great honour to again engage with

which we can strengthen Indias
engagement with our region
and our people. To explore new
avenues of collaboration. To tap
Indias burgeoning expertise in a

Mr Prime Minister, of all the

branching into the realm of the
ancient tradition of Vedam chanting.
The founder of the organisation, Sri
Sathya Sai Baba had said, Vedas shall

Sathya Sai Service Organisation of

The root of the word Veda is Vid

into verses, chapters and volumes to
ease their remembrance by individuals

Vedas are chanted, individually and

Thought of the week

Hard times dont create heroes. It is during the

hard times when the hero within us is revealed.

Editorial

From the desk of the

Managing Editor
Life must be a challenge. Only then is it exciting. In an obstacle race, you are
forced to surmount all the obstacles: to jump over the hurdles, go through the barrels,
crawl under the rugs, climb over walls.
What would happen if, to avoid all that, you went around all the obstacles and
asked for the winners cup? Would they give it to you? No. They would say, You must
go back and face all the obstacles.
... Make your life as exciting as possible, but always think of it as fun. The
adversities, as well as the harmony, should be enjoyable. Dont become sober and
morose and have a castor oil face in the name of spirituality. Just be happy. Jump
with joy. Even if you make a mistake, say, Hey, I did this? Great! What a wonderful
lesson I learned! If you really want to, you can make everything fun.
~ Sri Swami Satchidananda from The Golden Present
This reminds me of our hero for the weekRupan Patel of Hamilton, who right
after foiling a robbery attempt at his store returned to work the next day. We were
more impressed when Indian Weekender spoke to him and he was calm and relaxed
and even able to laugh about it. So really what life had thrown at him was a huge
obstacle, and he has been able to jump right over it (quite literally). Had it been for a
faint-hearted, they would have used this as an excuse to give up. Read the complete
story in our issue and watch the CCTV footage of the attempted robbery on our
website.
While on one hand we are proud of Rupan Patel, on the other, a section is bent
upon casting a shroud over the Auckland Diwali Festival. Without going into too
much detail here, I would only like to say that this is the largest platform to showcase
Indian culture in the country and rather than trying to put obstacles in its path,
we must all support and help to make this the dream festival, especially when the
organisers ATEEDare open and forthcoming to take suggestions and inputs from
the community. Read more on what people have to say about this, in our issue.
The ANZ Migrant Expo is just around the corner, and we are very proud to be
associated with this expo this year that it has grown to almost double in size from
last year. We have planned some exciting activities around this and so we hope our
readers will come and visit us at our stall.
It is also that time of the year when we celebrate Raksha Bandhana time to
pamper and spare a moment for our wonderful sisters who in their own ways always
love and support us. For the sisters too, its a time to send out a prayer for their
brothers, who always care for them but dont always necessarily show it. However,
the bond between a brother and sister is one of the most beautiful bonds that could
be and it is great to be able to celebrate it, year after year.
It is the start of the festivities. So with wishes that this season is filled with good
health and cheer for everyoneuntil next time

Chinese Black Monday: The road to hell, and back

Red

SANDEEP SINGH

n Monday, August 24, Chinas

stock market collapsed to a nine
per cent fall, commencing almost
a global chain reaction of market fall
that resulted in loss of USD $1 trillion off
global stocks worst trading since 2008.
Such was the impact of this great fall of
China that Xinhua, the governmentcontrolled news agency, had to christened it
as a Chinese Black Monday. The following
Tuesday was no better and Shanghai
Composite Index (SSE) continued its
downswing and opened with another 6.41
per cent loss. Thus manifesting one of the
most dreaded phenomenon of the capitalist
worldthe market correction.
Only good thing about this market
correction was that the world was aware
that it was due, though everybody wished
it to be extended as further as possible.
Everyone was tempted to ask if this is the
beginning ofroad to hellanother Global
Financial Crisis.
What is happening in China is of
immense interest for everyone around
the world. The Chinese growth story is
undoubtedly the single most success story
of massive economic transformations of
our times where it has achieved a record
10 percent growth rate for three consecutive
decades in the period between 19802010.
The simple meaning of this statistical
figure is that this growth has been
generating a huge global demand of goods
and servicesthe lifeline of modern
economic system. In year 2014, it was
worlds largest exporter, accounting for
12.5 per cent of worlds total exports, and
was the second largest importer a record 10
percent growth rate for three consecutive
decades in the period between 19802010.
The simple meaning of this statistical figure
is that this growth has been generating a
huge global demand of goods and services

the lifeline of modern economic system. In

year 2014, it was worlds largest exporter,
accounting for 12.5 per cent of worlds
total exports, and was the second largest
importer, consuming in more than 10 per
cent of world imports. China today is first
or second ranked trading partner of more
than hundred countries around the world,
who are benefitting from this insatiable
demand. Chinese growth story has been
too good to be true. But as they say that all
good things in life must come to an end,
so would Chinese growth story be coming
to an end too? This is the single biggest
fear that animates economic planners and
policy planners across the globe today, and
New Zealand is no exception. Interestingly,
fear itself is the biggest enemy of financial
markets, as it has potential to generate
a panic, a frenzy of stock selling, that can
commence exactly the type of financial
crisis everyone was fearing at the first place.
The world of today is caught in this vicious
cycle related to Chinas growth and its
eventual slowdown.
Probably this is why policy planners
around the world are adopting confidence
as their best strategy to deal with
apprehensions of slowing down of Chinas

growth story and its possible impact on

their national economies. This explains that
why there was no hurriedly organized press
conference, or frantic calls of corrective
actions from Chinese government, from
any national leader or policy making
establishments around the world, post this
latest Chinese Black Monday. Everyone is
busy in collectively exuberating confidence,
in a hope to hoodwink market correction.
To put it in perspective, probably this
explains why in July 2015, ANZs Economic
Outlook has described New Zealands
current economic challenges as that of
just managing some unruly children,
as opposed to an economy heading off
the rails. Their confidence seems to be
emanating from New Zealands better
microeconomic foundations and a strong
construction pipeline.
But like everywhere else in life, the
truth is somewhere in between these two
far ends of scale of fear and confidence,
and lies in prudence. Although at this
stage New Zealands government seems
to be better placed than many of its
Asia-Pacific neighbours in handling any
crisis emanating from an unexpected (or
expected) halt in Chinese juggernaut.

Their confidence is emanating from better

financial tools available to NZ government
such as leverage in tax-cut, interest-rate
cut, and a weakening dollar, that will keep
their export competitive. But there is a
need for New Zealand to prepare itself
better from a possible further decline
in global commodity market, which can
directly affect our already strained dairy
and agriculture sector. It is important to
note that agriculture is one of our most
important sectors and any negative external
shock can potentially subtract an estimated
NZ$930m from forecast national income in
2015. It also remains to be seen if the latest
blood-bath in Chinese markets would affect
Chinese consumers sentiments towards
New Zealands products, in effect affecting
our exports to China. Moreover, any fall
in Chinese demand has a potential to hit
us with a double whammy as our other
major trading partners such as Australia
and South Korea are more dependent
on Chinese demand, and face the risk
of slowdown.
One important strategy of prudence
would be to further diversify our trading
partnership and start looking beyond
China. In this regard India offers a strong
potential of a growing middle class whose
appetite for consumer goods (and services)
is ever increasing. Although India is already
a priority relationship for New Zealand and
we are negotiating a Free Trade Agreement
(FTA), which has potential to expand trade
in textiles, clothing and footwear, industrial
manufactured goods, but some urgency
can be imparted in light of impending
slowdown in Chinese growth. It will be
prudent to keep this budding relationship
with India, shielded from any bullish
expectation to replace our relationship with
China. We have to understand that it is not
just the road to hell, but the road back from
hell, which also has to be made with good
intentions.

Improving Indias export competitiveness

Amit Kapoor

ndian exports have fallen for the

eighth
consecutive
month10.3
per cent from the July 2014 level of
$25.793 billion to $23.137 billion in July
2015. The fall, if taken out of context, would
call for a worrying picture. However, given
that imports have also fallen 10.28 per
cent from $40.068 billion in July 2014 to
$35.950 billion in July 2015 calls for an
interesting read.
Also interesting is the fact the crude oil
imports in July 2015 were almost 35 per
cent lower than in July 2014 when they
were valued at $14.574 billion to $9.487
billion. That is a whopping decline of more
than $5 billion.
Indias export basket similarly saw
interesting developments. Exports dipped
sharply for petroleum products by 43 per
cent to $3.03 billion, chemicals six per cent
to $1.21 billion, leather products 10 per cent
to $0.52 billion, rice 12 per cent to $0.5
billion and the like. However, the exports of
gems and jewellery in July 2015 increased
five per cent to $3.04 billion, engineering
goods one per cent to $5.82 billion,
readymade garments seven per cent to $1.55
billion and drugs and pharmaceuticals 11 per
cent. These developments show that there
are forces such as sluggish international
demand, commodity price crash, currency
devaluations and the likes at play in this
complex environment.

These are some of the steps that India

could take to make its exports competitive
in getting over the present predicament and
also tide over long-run concerns:
First, it is imperative that Indias
diversification of exports in products,
services and destinations continues. A
recent IMF working paper, Make in India:
Which Exports Can Drive the Next Wave
of Growth also lends credence to this view.
According to this view, India is a relatively
diversified export economy and going
ahead, should further diversify its product
and service basket, as also the countries to
which it exports.
This has been happening consistently
since the time of liberalisation when exports
constituted less than 10 per cent of the GDP.
Today, exports stand close to 25 per cent
of the GDP. Manufacturing and natural
resource exports constitute two-third of
the export basket while the remaining onethird comprises exports of services. India
does well on the services front with some
four of the global exports being from India.
In the manufacturing segment, the
country has low-value exports compared
to other emerging market economies and,
therefore, should look to improve both
their quality and complexity. Along the
destination dimension, the focus should
be diversifying exports, as this would help
India tide over downturns. The fact that
Indias percentage of exports to emerging

markets has increased in comparison to

the US and Europe points to the fact that
policymakers have taken cognizance of
the changing external demand. The Look
and Act East policy should be augmented
with a Look and Act West policy taking
into account the possibilities in the Middle
East and African regions. Going ahead,
trade agreements and greater export
diversification will prove to be helpful.
Second, in line with the improving the
complexity of manufacturing sector is
bettering the countrys MSME ecosystem.
The MSMEs contribute an estimated
more than 40 per cent to the export
segment. At present, the segment remains
informal and cluster-driven approaches
are mostly absent. Timely statistics, as
well as information pertaining to export
statistics, remains at best hidden from the
common people. Also, operating an MSME
enterprise is a cumbersome task due to
labour regulations, while access to finance
also remains a challenge. Technology
adoption and labour productivity are both
low, leading to inefficient outcomes. Going
ahead, all these factors should be addressed
for getting better value additions and
bettering export competitiveness.
Third, India should look to embrace
international competition. The infant
industry argument for trade protectionism
is outdated and needs to be replaced with
an open economic paradigm for economic

development. While there needs to be a

calibrated approach to trade liberalisation,
the movement towards this should
continue for greater economic good. It
means land, labour and capital markets
should be further reformed (with adequate
regulation) for greater domestic and foreign
participation. Hopefully, these would lead
to a greater ease of doing business and
make operating businesses easier. It could
also lead to entrepreneurshipcritical for
job generation. Even farmers doing value
addition constitute businesses and the
whole debate of farmer versus business
seems to be anachronistic.
Over the coming decades, India will
have to look at these aspects for export
competitiveness. The need is to provide
adequate facilities in terms of land, basic
infrastructure such as roads, and basic
services such as access to finance, education
and healthcare facilities et al to the people
to set up enterprises and create value.
Once these enterprises achieve scale, they
should be mentored and allowed to export
to markets where they face international
competition but also get adequate value for
their exports. This is the only lasting way to
achieve and sustain export competitiveness.

Making the crash work in your favour

Amit Dasgupta

he devaluation of the Chinese

yuan, coupled with anxieties
about Beijings ability to revive
the flagging economy, tasted first blood
with a massive global stock market slide
and a currency tumble. Worse is expected,
especially for countries that relied on the
Chinese economy as the main growth
driver. Rumours abound of the contagion
spreading, as indeed it did during the East
Asian crisis because of the interlocking of
economies
So far there is no indication of credible
policy interventions that might arrest the
Made in China rout. Investors have started
pulling money out of developing countries
that they invested in to fuel Chinas appetite
for raw materials and there is genuine fear
that the anticipated crisis could trigger a
full-blown global slowdown.
The Indian economy has so far
performed relatively better in local
currency and dollar terms. Dealers have
not been excessively worried at the current
depreciation of the rupee because they
see it as being over-valued in any case by
around 8-10 percent. Nor, indeed, was RBI
Governor Raghuram Rajan perturbed and
said he was willing to deploy the countrys
foreign exchange reserves, if necessary,
to shore up the currency. Sensing Indias
macroeconomic fundamentals to be
resilient, Prime Minister Narendra Modi
sensed an opportunity for India to fill in the

space likely to be vacated by China.

The crash, in other words, could
be converted into an opportunity.
With oil prices at an all-time low, a unique
opportunity presents itself for India to
make that long anticipated transition
towards growth. But for this to happen, the
government needs to undertake certain key
steps.
First, it needs to ensure non-interference
in the autonomy of the Reserve Bank of
India. The RBI governor has firmly ruled
out rate cuts, cautioning that without
sustained low inflation, a rate cut would be
inflationary.
Indeed, the rupee slide would make

it well near impossible for RBI to cut

rates. Reports that the finance minister
is at loggerheads with the RBI governor
are seriously damaging because they are
perceived to be true.
What is equally worrisome is the
governments aggressive foray into curbing
autonomy, whether in institutions of
higher learning or even the Supreme Court.
Will RBI be the next institution to fall?
Second, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and
his ministry need to concentrate on the
series of reforms they are tasked with.
Indeed, it would be a major
disappointment if Jaitley came up with
yet another non-budget. The focus on

curbing black money and corruption,

while laudable, cannot remain the finance
ministrys sole preoccupation.
Third, India needs to urgently initiate
reforms to improve its rankings on the ease
of doing business. As per the 2015 World
Bank rankings, India stands at 142 out of
189 countries.
Modi has been promising progress on
this front for over a year. Unless present
rankings and perceptions improve, India
will not be able to take advantage of Chinas
downturn and attract foreign capital.
Fourth, policy makers need to act with
a greater sense of urgency. The onion
shortfall, for instance, was estimated
several months ago but delays in import
resulted in the current crisis-like situation.
With the Indian economy on a growth
trajectory and not dependent on the
Chinese economy, even a conservative
Moody estimate of 7 percent growth
would be a useful plank to build upon.
But this requires consistency of purpose
and clear policy directives monitored by
PMO. Unless, the government seizes the
opportunity the crash has presented, Modi
would be criticized for presiding over UPA
2 in a new incarnation.

India has forex reserves to stabilise

currency volatility: RBI

s the rupee hit a new low

and the stock market
took a tumble, Reserve
Bank of India (RBI) Governor
Raghuram Rajan said this week
that India has sufficient foreign
exchange reserves to prevent
volatility in the currency market.
India has foreign exchange
reserves of around $380 billion and
these would be used if needed to
subdue the volatility in the currency
market, he said on the side-lines of
a banking conference here.
Speaking at the conference,
Rajan referred to his earlier
comments that the central bank
was not a cheerleader for the
economy and said it was not for
the RBI to lift sentiments unduly
to deliver booster shots to the
stock markets.
We do not have to look too
far beyond our borders to see
the consequences of such boosts.
Rate cuts should not be seen
as goodies that the RBI gives
out stingily after much public
pleading, Rajan said.
Instead, what is important
is sustained low inflation,
something the prime minister
emphasised in his Independence
Day speech, and rate cuts are a
natural consequence that the RBI
has no hesitation in delivering,

Rajan added.
He said there was much to be
optimistic about the economy.
The Indian economy is full of
possibilities, even as much of the
world is mired in pessimism.
Indeed, I have been arguing
that the fragility of the world
economy is precisely because it
has focused on quick fixes rather
than deep reform, Rajan said.
The question for us as a
society is whether we have the
discipline to do what is necessary
at a time when global conditions
are propitiouscommodity prices
look like they will stay low for a
time, helping the fight against
inflation, and there is plenty of
money around the world and at
home, looking for investments,
including in distressed assets,

that can help us clean bank and

corporate balance sheets, he said.
According to him, what sets
poor nations apart from the rich
was not people or resources or even
luck but good governance, which
comes from strong frameworks
and strong institutions.
A summary explanation of the
economic problems of the recent
past is that they arose because
India outgrew its institutions. A
summary of the government and
the Reserve Banks measures to
restore sustainable growth is that
we are building the necessary
institutions, Rajan said.
Referring to the falling global
trade, Rajan said the domestic
demand has to be increased while

that typically plague such efforts
by emerging markets.
According to him, structural
reforms will help strengthen
the domestic demand growth
and cited measures such as
Indradhanush of the central
government for the banking
sector, and licensing of payment
banks by RBI.
Rajan said new small finance
banks would be licensed next
month and two new universal
banks are launching next month.
According to the RBI governor,
the economy has come a long way
since the difficulties in 201213 though three areas are still
works-in-progress from the
RBIs perspective.
First, economic growth is
still below levels that the country
is capable of. Second, while
consumer price inflation has
moderated, inflation expectations
among the public are still high,
creating a gap between the real
rates that savers expect and the
rates corporations think they
pay. Third, stressed assets in the
financial system continue to be
high, which holds back growth
and new lending, even while
dampening bank incentives to cut
base rates, he said.
Rajan said the short-term

macroeconomic priorities of RBI

are: help bringing down inflation
and work with the government
and banks to resolve the issue of
distressed projects and cleaning
up bank balance sheets.
On dealing with distressed
assets, Rajan said the RBI had
ended the forbearance accorded to
restructured loans, which would
now be classified as non-performing
loans. However, RBI has made it
easier to recognise and deal with
distressed projects. In other words,
while ending forbearance, we have
introduced flexibility for those who
recognise and deal with stressed
assets, he said.
According
to
Rajan,
companies in some sectors were
in real distress and some could
survive with government help
while others were unviable, for
which too much help to unviable
firms could also cause distress
to spread to healthy firms.
In this regard, the country needed
rapid progress in the coming year
on the creation of institutions
necessary for resolution such as
the new Bankruptcy Code and
the Company Law Tribunals that
would administer it as well as the
Financial Resolution Authority
(for resolving financial institution
distress), the RBI governor said.

Indian-American doctor gifts new ears to boy

n a miraculous surgical feat,

an Indian-American surgeon
has gifted a pair of new ears
to an eight-year-old boy in the US,
media reported.
Elijah Bell, a second-grade
student at the Frazer Elementary
in Stark County, Ohio, was
born
with
bilateral
atresia
microtiaa rare birth defect where
the outer ears are undeveloped.
But thanks to Ananth Murthy,
director of plastic and reconstructive
surgery at the Akron Childrens
Hospital, Elijah got a new pair reconstructed from his rib cartilage,
Canton Representative reported.
The surgical feat has been reported
across the US as a miracle

because of the intricacies involved.

Besides five surgeries to create the
ears -- starting when Elijah was just
four-year-old -- Murthy had to use
a skin graft from the boys thigh to
create a gap between his ears and
his head.
The final surgery was done in
July when Murthy gave Elijahs ears
detailed hills and valle ys.
The body naturally wants to
smooth everything out as it heals, so
we always have to go back a couple
of times to help create the natural
curves of an ear, Murthy was
quoted as saying in a statement.
It is an artistic procedure, said
the
Indian-American
doctor.
For Elijah, the surgery has helped

develop a new confidence in him.

Hes just learning to love
himself the way he is, the
boys mother Colleen Bell said.
Becoming a more confident young
man is going to translate into his
education, its going to translate
into his friendships with others,
how he works with teachers, all
those things, Bell said.
Its going to make a
really big difference for him.
Murthy is described by his Akronbased hospital as our very own
Doogie Howser, who completed
his undergraduate degree at the age
of 19 and earned his medical degree
by the time he was 22 years old.

Herald quoted Devon Sullivan,

a student, as saying. Organisers
said they were thrilled with
the success of the festival,
which saw nearly 4,000 people
in attendance.
Were putting this event
together for the community so
that we can learn about each other
and build a long lasting, trusting
relationship, organiser Biren
Pathak said. The festival gives a lot
of information about the culture of
India, he added.

Indian restaurants in
Britain call for shortterm work visas

ndian restaurant owners in

Britain have called on the
government to introduce
short-term work visas in order
to plug the shortage of curry
chefs across the country, a media
report said last week.
The owners are preparing a
submission to Prime Minister
David Cameron and cabinet
members, which warns that
90 per cent of Indian curry
restaurants were under the
threat of a chef skills shortage,
The
Independent
reported.
It also reminds Cameron of his
promise of help to get the
skilled Asian chefs you need, that
he made to Indian restaurants at
the British Curry Awards in 2013.
There have been questions
on immigration and getting

chefs
with
the
necessary
experience, he acknowledged
at the 2013 awards function.
Indian restaurants in Britain
employ around 100,000 people
and earn 4.2 billion pounds a year.
Enam Ali, who founded the
British Curry Awards 10 years
ago, said hundreds of restaurants
could soon shut down as it
can take up to three years
to train a chef from scratch.
We urge the government to help
our industry.
We strongly recommend that
the immigration laws covering
bringing in chefs from abroad
be made, even on a temporary
basis, more adequately flexible,
the submission from Indian
restaurant
owners
reads,
according to the British daily.

life is to go back to a family that has
and will continue loving him irrespective of
his performances on the cricket field.
The great Sri Lankan batsman ended his
journey in international cricket in Colombo
at the P. Sara Oval ground on Monday,
August 24 as India clinched the second Test
by 278 runs.
The
three-match
Test
series is currently tied at 11.
Sangakkara failed to contribute with the
bat, scoring just 18 in his last innings,
but at the post-match presentation he
was almost in tears bidding farewell
to the sport he chose as a profession.
People ask me about the big achievements.
The hundreds, the World Cup win (T20),
but I just look up at the box, all my friends
over the last 30 years, have come up here on
a Monday to watch me play. To be able to go
back to a family that will love me whether I
win or lose.
That is my greatest achievement,
Sangakkara said. The prolific left hander
who has scored 12,400 runs from 134 Test
matches also lauded the efforts of the Virat
Kohli-led Indian team who were brilliant in
the match spoiling a perfect farewell.
To Virat and the Indian team. Thanks
for the kind words and more importantly
the quality of cricket you have brought here.
I couldnt have asked more anything more
than tough cricket when I am leaving. You
have been our toughest opponents. We had
planned to beat you.

cricket after the second test cricket match against India.

Sometimes
we
have
succeeded,
sometimes we havent, but thanks for being
there, he said.
The former Sri Lanka skipper
also said his biggest inspiration has
been his parents and thanked them
for their contribution over the years.
A lot of people have asked me what has
inspired me. I dont have to look beyond my
parent. I am sorry I dont want to embarrass
you but you have been my inspiration.
Thank you amma and appachi. I
felt safe at home. They say you cant
choose your family, but I am thankful
I was born your children, he said.
Sangakkara also thanked his former
coaches and team-mates and added the
current Sri Lankan team headed by all

My diet and fitness mantra depends on
what I want to achieve, whatever role or the

look, you want to look very thin for a role, or
you want just look normal like a soft woman

change the plan accordingly, Katrina said.
She said she shuffles between Pilates or

I pretty much try to follow a sensible

Aarushi murder case
to release in October

ctress Elli Avram, who essays

a love interest of comedianactor Kapil Sharma in his debut
Bollywood film Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon,
says he made her go through a laugh riot
while shooting for the film.
He made me laugh so many times that
I was getting teary and my make-up artist
had to come every time to do my touch up!
It was good fun and I loved it, Elli told
reporters of her experience of shooting with
the Comedy Nights With Kapil star.
She also recollected an instance when
while shooting a scene, she was supposed
to be a little upset with his character,
but all she could do was only laugh.
I had to hold that mood (upset mood) in
the beginning. Just before the shoot, he
suddenly started to make those (funny) faces
and said a line in a funny way... and I was like
Can you please stop it? Im going to laugh...
how will I come into the serious mode?.
Nevertheless, she finds Kapil to be very
talented, supportive, kind and has done a
great job.
The Sweden-born actress made her debut
with Mickey Virus, and she is especially
happy that she has worked on her Hindi
speaking skills.

the same time... shes still different. So that
is something that I hope to achieve in life if I
get the opportunity, said Alia at the launch
of the book, Sculpt and Shape: the Pilates
Way written by well-known fitness experts
Yasmin Karachiwala and Zeena Dhalla.
Asked by a journalist about the
importance of a hot body to get better
roles, Alia said, I feel nowadays there
are characters and were trying to fit into
characters. Just looking at my roles, for
Udta Punjab, I had to lose a lot of weight
because I was playing a particular character,
for Shaandaar I had to fit into a bikini and
look desirable as a woman, not as a girl.
Katrina and Sophie Chaudhry were
also present.
Alia and Katrina, who are trained by
Yasmin for their toned bodies said that
they blindly follow Yasmins instructions
and credited her for their fit bodies.
Alia feels monotony is a decisive factor which
can affect the popularity with fans. I feel it
becomes a bit boring to look a particular way
the whole time and you have to change it
up. Thats why its important to create your
own look, when it comes to a character. You
also have to be fortunate to get the different
characters that you are playing. But people
get bored seeing you the same way.
Alias bikini look in Shaandaar has turned
heads all over.

Making the shift

Health and wellness now

ranks high on peoples
priority. The World Yoga
Day got enthusiastic
participation from
thousands of wellness
enthusiasts across
the world.

way to the community. It was

very humbling.
I started getting feedback
from people on how yoga was
helping them heal from minor
issues. Having practised yoga
all these years, teaching came
natural to be. Later on, I ended
up leaving my full-time job to
be a full-time yoga teacher. It
has been three years since then.
Now I am a certified trained yoga
teacher. I have been doing some
community work and teaching
people of all ages from both India
and New Zealand.
My mission is to make the
shift with the help of these
beautiful ancient techniques. Our
nation should be stress-free and
disease-free, which is everyones
birth right.

ew Zealand celebrated
the World Yoga Day
with an impressive
number
of
people
who
participated in group yoga
sessions held to mark the day.
One of the coaches leading the
gathering at Manukaus Vodafone
Event Centre was Gurpreet Sidhu.
She has also been passionately
promoting the yogic way of living
within the community. Indian
Weekender is happy to feature
her as our Face of the Week,
here is a gist of our conversation
with her.

Yoga is quite popular in

India these days. But how
enthusiastic are people about
it in New Zealand?

Tell us something about you

and your profession.
I am an Indian-born Kiwi yoga
teacher and wellness coach.
How long have you been
practising yoga?
I have been a yoga practitioner
for more than 15 years now.
When did you start working
as an instructor and why
did you choose this as
a profession?
About six years ago, I started
teaching friends and colleagues

who always asked me to share

yoga with them. The hall we had
at my work place soon became
full. Even my manager asked me

to take few breathing exercises

before we began our meeting.
As I taught, I realised that I was
able to contribute in a small

The person who deserves to be

credited for reviving yoga in India
is Swami Ramdev. However in my
opinion Indians still have a long
way to go in adopting yoga at the
grassroots level. At present, the
percentage of people practising
yoga is highest in America and it
seems like a recent trend that is
being passed on to Australia and
New Zealand.
It is therefore my intention to
introduce yoga in New Zealand
in its traditional form rather
than it being commercialised or
distorted. This is why I try and

reach out to the community as

much as I can. It is therefore my
humble request to everyone to
follow me on Facebook and to
also further share with anyone
who you think can benefit. So
whenever I am organising any
event, I can reach out to everyone
with convenience. This summer,
I have a lot of plans of taking
community yoga to the outdoors
and enjoying yoga with the clean
and fresh environment we have
been blessed with in New Zealand.
Gym culture is quite popular
here as well, these days. What
do you think is betterGym
or yoga, and how?
According
to
the
U.S.
Department on Aging, there are
four components to good physical
health:
strength,
flexibility,
balance and aerobic capacity.
Yoga ticks all boxes. No fancy
piece of equipment is needed.
One can do yoga with your own
body and a yoga mat. Doctors too
are recommending yoga to their
patients these days.
How can people who are
interested in yoga reach you?
I have a yoga studio in Botany
Junction details of which are

Raksha Bandhan: the knot of protection

IWK Bureau

aksha
Bandhan,
a
special occasion in the
Indian tradition, is a
celebration of the bond between
a brother and sister. The Sanskrit
word raksha means protection
and bandhan means bond.
The roots of the festival lie in
mythological stories. In the epic
story of Mahabharata, Lord
Krishna hurt his index finger
while killing ShishuPal. To stop
the blood flowing, Draupadi tore a
piece of her sari and tied it to stop
the blood. That day, Lord Krishna
made a vow to protect her. He
kept his promise and came to
her rescue when she was being
disrobed by the Kaurava after
they won a gambling bet against
the Pandava. Indian mythology is
replete with such fables.
Raksha Bandhan is a festival
marked by a sacred thread
(rakhi) entwined with love and
responsibility. This sacred thread
symbolises the sisters prayers
for her brothers good fortune
and long life and the brothers
promise to protect his sister
from evil.
Siblings fight, steal stuff from
one another and accuse each
other. But petty things such

as these do not overpower the

underlying love they share. They
are your first friends, your first
rivals. They hold a special place in
our hearts, and Raksha Bandhan
in one day that symbolises
this love.
This year, choose the right
rakhi colour according to your
zodiac sign.
Madhu
Kotiya,
Spiritual
Healer at indiatarot.com, has
shared tips for choosing the right
coloured rakhis and gifts.

Aries: Choose a red-coloured

rakhi, which is red, orange or
yellow. An Aries is generally a
sport lover, so the best gift for
him will be sport equipment.
Taurus: Opt for blue- or
silver-coloured rakhis. While a
Taurus man is as stubborn as a
bull, he is also warm and open.
Hence the perfect gift for him
will include a gourmet gift basket
of delicious chocolates, plush
pillows or cashmere blankets.
Gemini: Choose a rakhi,
which is green in colour. Since
a Gemini is a highly intelligent
and
talkative
person,
gift
him something that would
complement his intelligence such
as a book or a journal or a unique
picture frame.

Cancer: Buy a rakhi made of

silk threads or pearls, as they are
soft from inside. Cancerians love
gifts that have a personal meaning,
therefore any handmade gift, or
something related to home will be
a perfect gift for them.
Leo: Your rakhi should be
in orange, pink or red colour. In
terms of gifting, an eye-catching
jewellery, cosmetics, fragrances
or a grooming kit will be a
perfect gift.

and sensuality. A basket filled

with scented soaps, lotions and
candles will be the ideal gift
for them.

Scorpio: Red should be

your colour. Scorpions
are discreet and extra
sensual
and

colour.
Libra is a
sign
of
balance
and
scale and they
love
beauty

related
to
adventure or
an outdoor picnic.
Capricorn: If you
have a Capricorn brother,
then your rakhi should be pink
in color. Capricorns are the most
ambitious zodiac sign, therefore
anything related to status, job
and success will be able to satiate
your Capricorn brother.

Virgo: A rakhi made of

silk threads or green or
white in colour should be
your pick. The best gift for
this organised sign will
be a magazine basket,
schedule-appointment
journal or a nice
watch.
Libra: For your
Libra brother opt
for a rakhi,
which
is
purple or
turquoise

or not. To avoid such an

embarrassment,

him
something

Aquarius: Any dark-coloured

rakhi will do wonders for the
strong bond with your brother.
A technical gadget will be an
apt gift.

concerned with their

appearances, so a bottle of
perfume or a pair of designer
shoes or sunglasses will be
a perfect gift.
Sagittarian:
You
should go for a yellow-coloured
rakhi. Sagittarian is outspoken,
therefore they will be honest
about whether they liked the gift

Pisces: White- or yellowcoloured rakhi

should be

for your
Pisces
brother.
This sign is sensitive
and compassionate therefore
anything to do with luxury or
beauty will be their ideal gift.
