Series and Parallel Resistor, Inductor and Capacitor Circuits
Two common forms of RL Circuits were introduced in the laboratory: The Series and
Parallel RL Circuits. Weve been given a circuit where the capacitor, inductor and resistor are
connected in series and in parallel.
In the Series RLC Circuit experiment, a circuit with the inductor, capacitor, and resistors
are connected in series, and a signal generator was connected to the circuit to serve as the
input source. An oscilloscope was connected parallel to the circuit. The first channel was
connected parallel to the loads, and the second channel was connected parallel to the resistor:
the capacitor and the inductor. Different values of frequency was introduced into the circuit, and
the input and output frequency at channel 1 and 2 were obtained by getting the reciprocal of
measured time at one period. The phase angle was also obtained at different sets of frequency,
and also the magnitude of the voltages were obtained. From the values, there is a frequency
value where the response of the circuit is purely resistive. Going below this given frequency
makes the given circuit capacitive, and the going above the given frequency makes it inductive.
An RLC series circuit can be used as band pass filter, as the obtained values from the table
have a frequency wherein the output is at maximum, and going up or down from a certain range
gives an output voltage where it is decreasing.
In the Parallel RLC Circuit experiment, the capacitor, inductor, and resistor were
connected in parallel. A resistor connected in series to the parallel components was used to
regulate the current in the circuit and a signal generator serves as an input source to the circuit.
An oscilloscope was connected to the circuit, where the channel 1 probe was connected in
parallel to the parallel components of the circuit, and the channel 2 probe was connected to the
resistor in series with the parallel components. The same procedure from Series RLC Circuit
experiment was applied, and the output voltages at different frequency inputs were obtained.
The theoretical impedance was calculated and compared to the measured impedance by
dividing the obtained input voltage peak with the current flowing through the resistor in series.
The current with respect to the resistor in series is obtained by dividing the voltage peak by its
resistance. From the values obtained, the RLC parallel circuit can act as a band stop filter.
When the circuit is resistive in response, the output voltage is approaching 0 based on the table.
When the input frequency decreases, the voltage output increases. When the input frequency
increases with respect to the resonant frequency, voltage output increases.
RLC Circuits can act as filters, depending on the configuration of the connections of the
LC components. They are useful in signal applications, where the filtering and screening of
frequencies are an integral part of maintaining a quality output involving frequency.
Ive learned from this experiment that an alternative to using filters is the addition of
inductor and capacitor in the circuit. Inductors are also more useful in filtering a given set of
frequencies than the resistor, as the impedance of the inductor is dependent of the given
frequency, whereas for the resistor, the resistance of a resistor is constant and independent to
the given frequency.
The experiment is fun for me, as the time spent when during the two experiments has
been an exciting event for me. The challenges we have experience, the clashing of opinions

over the varying answers obtained over a single problem, to the epic fail moments where our
jokes were not conveyed to the other members. Also, Ive learned some of the properties of the
inductor and capacitor in series and parallel. These thing will serve me greatly, as there are
circuit that involve capacitor and inductor configurations, and these experiments have made me
understand greatly how these components behave when they are in series or in parallel
configuration.
