STEPH SAVES THE DAY!
‘The Town Crier’ is pleased
to announce the new Editor
of the popular weekly paper
is local girl Stephanie Ellis.
Steph, who is 21 years old,
attended St. Johns C of E
Aided Primary School in
Jubillee Road, before going
to King James I Community
College in Bishop Auckland.
She later studied Law at the
University of Northumbria
in Newcastle, before joining
the team in October of last
year as Assistant Editor.
Originally, the plan was for
Steph to learn the ropes from
John Smith, the Editor, and
gradually take more
responsibility, making his life
easier and also to enable him
to have a proper holiday, as
John had not had any real
time off for 7 years and was
planning to go to Eastbourne
in May for a week.
Unfortunately, John died on
April 1st of a sudden heart
attack, throwing Steph right
in at the deep end.
She was left with a mammoth
task on her hands because,
not only had we lost our
Editor, we also experienced a
major breakdown in
communications, losing
access to the internet and
telephone lines all in the same
week.

Local taxi drivers protesting
about a new advanced driving
test have decided to ban all
Labour Borough Councillors
from their cars.
T.A.S.D. - the Taxi
Association of Sedgefield
District – are up in arms
because new drivers in the
Sedgefield Borough are the
only new drivers throughout
the area who are forced to sit
the Driving Standards Agency
(D.S.A.) tests.
Members of the Association
maintain that the Sedgefield
Borough Council has placed
their operators at an
unnecessary disadvantage,
with Councillors ignoring an
opportunity to “level the
playing field”.
The Chairman of the
Association, Ricky
Matthews, stated that the
Council's
Committee
Licensing
had an
opportunity to revoke the
decision concerning the tests
at the beginning of this
month, however Labour's
majority on the Committee
served to push it through.
Mr. Matthews added that the
decision to uphold the tests
was a wrong one, stating:

 SHILDON'S HISTORIC RAIL
TUNNEL SHAFTS DEMOLISHED BY
RAIL OPERATOR
The 'Town Crier' can
report that a significant part
of the railway heritage of
the town of Shildon has
been demolished by rail
operator Network Rail,
with many people believing
that the pioneering railway
town, where the world's first
passenger journey began,
has been stripped of some
of its heritage.
It is understood that
Network Rail has capped
and demolished four brick
ventilators which run along
the Prince of Wales Tunnel
in Shildon.
Although they are believed
to have been rebuilt early in
the life of the tunnel, the
shafts were sunk when the
tunnel, which is still used
today, was built way back in
the 1840's.
Up until recently, the brick
ventilation shafts, which
are cylindrical in shape and
range in size from that of a
shed to that of a small house,
were the only evidence of
the tunnel beneath.
A local historian, Chris
Mills, stated : “ I just found
out in passing that they were
going to be demolished and,
by the time that I went to
take some pictures, two of
them had gone.”

FOOD FESTIVAL A SUCCESS
DESPITE SLIGHT REDUCTION IN
ATTENDANCE FIGURE
Around 21,000 people made
their way to Bishop
Auckland's Auckland Castle
last weekend for the fifth
annual Wear Valley Food
Festival and, despite the
attendance figure being
slightly down on that of
2007, the organisers hailed
this year's event as another
success.
Last year, when glorious
weather resulted in visitors
to the Festival taking time
out to sit on the grass to
drink wine and to eat ice
cream , the attendance
figure was a record 23, 000.
Sue Snowdon, the
Chairwoman of Bishop
Auckland's Marketing and
Promotions Group, stated
that it had been a
tremendous day despite the
fact that the weather was
not as good.
Mrs. Snowdon added : “ At
the first Festival in 2003,
around 6,000 people
attended and now, with the
tremendous amount of
support from partners and
sponsors, we are able to host
a wonderful event for the
area.”
She added : “ Everybody
involved gives 150 per cent
to make it work and, looking
at the television and
newspaper coverage, the
distances people travelled
and how well the stalls did,
I would say we cracked it
again!”
The event brought
producers from across the
Bishop Auckland area and
the Durham Dales and there
was also a Craft Marquee as
well as entertainment in
Bishop Auckland town
centre.

the town and surrounding
area. I am grateful to the
people who make it happen
for supporting local
businesses and promoting
the area.”

oriental tastes which was
provided by staff from the
Tokyo Kitchen Company
– the self-styled Noodle
Ninjas, who demonstrated
Oriental cooking with more
than a certain amount of
flair!
Entertainment was provided
by a juggler and by
escapologist Rob Roy

their first season in the
Sunderland Catholic Club
over 40's League, are
heading for promotion to
Division 2, last week
reached the final of the Billy
Lorraine Cup.
To achieve this feat, the
'Horse' were up again fellow
Division 4 side, Southwick
Social Club from
Sunderland, a match which,
thankfully, was played on
the Horse's home turf.
After a thrilling encounter,
the Shildon lads came away
with a 4 – 3 win after extra
time.
The Horse took a while to
settle, but still had two or
three chances to open the
scoring.
Playing with a 3 – 4 – 3
formation and kicking into
the sun, they were hoping
the goalkeeper would be
blinded by the severe light.
Alas, it was not to be, as
Southwick scored the only
goal before half time.
In the second half, Shildon
got a deserved equalizer.
