ANCIENT LITERATURE EVIDENCE OF THE TRIBALLI

Mirena Slavova
Summary
The paper reviews the ancient literature evidence of the Triballi, their interpretation being based on several fundamental methodological principles:
1. Taking into account the chronology of the evidence.
2. Taking into account the genre specificity of the ancient literary source
which contains the evidence.
3. Taking into account the internal context of the evidence.
4. Taking into account the external literature fate of the evidence quoting,
epitomizing, paraphrasing.
The author ponders over the objectivity of the data about the Triballi in
the various genres of the Ancient Greek and Latin language literature, about
the literature clichs regarding the barbarians and the barbarianism in them,
as well as about their actual image in the notions of the ancient people. Is the
image of the barbarian created by the set of certain non-Hellenistic traits such
as excessive eating, drinking and sexuality, treachery, cruelty and anthropophagy,
which break the fragile peace between society, individual and gods? Are there specific traits, used by the ancient authors to characterize the Triballi that differ from
those of the barbarians as a whole, and in particular of the Thracians?
As a result of the analysis of the literature texts, separated in ten genre
groups, an attempt was made to distinguish at least three different truths about
the Triballi the objective historical truth about this tribe, their image in the
notions of the authors contemporaries and the traditional genre prisms through
which this information is interpreted.
