Rememberthatthestandarddeviationandvariancecanonlybeusedwhenthemeanis
usedasthemeasureofcenter.
Thevarianceistheaverageofthesquaresofthedeviationsoftheobservationsfromtheir
mean.Therefore,thevariancedoesn'thavethesameunitofmeasurementastheoriginal
data.However,sincethestandarddeviationisthesquarerootofthevariance,itdoeshave
thesameunitofmeasurementastheoriginaldata.Thisiswhyweoftenprefertalking
aboutthestandarddeviationasopposedtothevariation.Thestandarddeviationcanbe
thoughtofas"theaveragedistanceofeachdatapointfromitsmean."Althoughthisis
somewhatimprecise,it'sagoodwayofthinkaboutthestandarddeviation.
