Staying put and creating beau-
ty where you are is in.
Julie Smith, of Julie Smith
and Associates in Granite Bay,
says her clients, who a few
years ago would have built a
new house, are now upgrading
what they have.
She says if they are building
a new home, they’re doing less
square footage. Whether it’s
new construction, a remodel
or redecorating, Smith
believes a designer can help
homeowners pull their look
together.
“It’s important to ensure all
of the elements match. It’s
what makes the project sing,”
Smith says.
Local interior designers have
insider tips on how to get the
livable look you want in the
home you’re in.
David Leinberger, owner of
Launch Design in Granite Bay,
says, “There are no hardcore
trends this year. People want
comfort and a more casual
look. Everything and anything
goes.”
“Warm, inviting and com-
fortable,” is how Bob Hag-
mann, of House2Home
Design in Roseville, describes
the current look people are
trying to achieve.
Designer Lisa Smith, daugh-
ter of Julie Smith, says the
home design trend this year is
“not to be trendy.” She says the
look should be classic.
Her mother describes a clas-
sic look as “timeless instead of
trendy.” She believes that
choosing a classic style pro-
tects a homeowner’s décor
investment.
Hagmann says “casual ele-

Each of the designers express dis-
may over what television shows and

“People see things in home maga-

Smith says.
Leinberger says the television
shows on interior design give viewers
some bad advice.
“A lot of what they show is not
good design. It is design that looks
good on television, not in real life,”
he says.
On the topic of paint, the designers
agree that painting only one wall in a
different color is not good design.
They recommend painting the entire
room in that color, including the ceil-
ing.
“A white ceiling looks unfinished,”
explains Julie Smith.
Leinberger advises against creating
an “Easter egg village” look by paint-
ing every room a different color.
“Choose one color for the entire
house and then use a light, medium
and dark shade of that color,” he
says.
Lisa Smith claims “white is the new

kitchen cabinets, trim, or even walls.
