H olidays in Austria. We are delighted to present you with our Destination Austria Travel Manual 2010. It is the most comprehensive and complete reference guide for
travel to and within Austria. This publication incorporates a detailed listing of Australian and New Zealand travel companies selling a large product range of Austrian
holiday experiences – from city stays to Danube cruises, musical/cultural packages and walking or cycling tours – all designed to exploring Austria’s diverse landscapes
and unique cultural offerings. It also includes flight information, travel tips, accommodation guides and features handy listings like a website directory, distance charts and
chapters on rail travel as well as a coloured map of our country.
The year 2010 marks Gustav Mahler’s 150th birthday. The composer, director of the Vienna Court Opera and musical genius will be duly celebrated with performances
throughout the year.
Do you know what makes Austria so special? Visitors love travelling around the country for many different reasons. One of them is certainly this special mixture of
tradition and innovation, which you encounter at every corner. Especially in Vienna, the capital, and the larger cities like Graz or Salzburg, cultural treasures from many
centuries face modern art and architecture.
The Habsburg monarchy, which reined the country for about 600 centuries, left a wealth of palaces, government buildings and parkways in Vienna. And Salzburg, the
Baroque town, is famous for its magnificent Residence of the Prince Archbishops, the Residence Gallery and, of course as birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. In
spite of all this history, which can of course be encountered in many more places, Austria’s sense of modernism and open-mindedness is reflected in a great number of
pieces of architecture and a rich offer of state-of-the art museums. While focusing your attention to all these highlights you should not forget about Austria’s music and
theatre scene - and here again you will be amazed at the immense number of festivals and performances - from medieval to classic and avant-garde.
Throughout the manual we also take you on a journey dedicated to your tastebuds. Exploring local culinary delights has become a favourite activity for many travellers
and with this in mind we are introducing you to a selection of dishes and beverages that are matched with a cultural experience. This unique combination will literally give
you a special taste of Austria.
I cordially welcome you to my home country and your next holiday – experience this exciting tension and let yourself be carried away into a world where past and present
have merged into a perfect blend.

A fresh
view of art
In terms of sizable history, Austria’s major architectural
attractions are an open invitation to travel back through
the ages.
The medieval city of Innsbruck has a great deal to offer in terms of emblematic
contemporary architecture. The Olympic city boasts with Zaha Hadid’s Bergisel
ski jump, a futuristic structure that has become known as the cities lighthouse,
or the new, contemporary Hungerburgbahn, the imposing mountain railway that
goes right from the city centre up to 2,000 metres above sea level.
2 3 Although famous for its music, Salzburg now demonstrates the coexistence
of baroque buildings and modern simplicity. The marble-clad building of the
Museum of Modern Art is perched atop the Mönchsberg and Hangar-7 with its
imposing aircraft collection is synonymous for avant-garde architecture, modern
art and exquisite cuisine.

Waltzing the
Blue Danube
Danube so blue, so bright and blue…no wonder that Johann
Strauss’ most famous waltz became the nation’s secret anthem.
N othing introduces you better to the delights of Austria like a trip down the Danube, where
its banks are rich with history, cultural treasures and sunlit vineyards.
On the way through the enchanting river valley you pass ancient castles perched up on high
cliffs, historical villages - some so small you need to walk as cars aren’t allowed – and green
2 grapevines ripening under a baking sun.
You cruise along the 900-year old Benedictine Abbey of Melk at the entrance to the World Cultural
Heritage Region Wachau before you go ashore in Dürnstein where you walk through medieval
cobblestone streets and discover the magnificent blue façade of the baroque Stiftskirche.
When you stand still and close your eyes you can observe and enjoy the aroma of the well
known Wachau apricot. From the fruit gardens along the river, locals produce tempting goodies
such as jams and fruit-jellies, Schnapps, or cakes and sell them in their little shops or at the
local farmers markets.
Winemaking can be traced back in the area around the river Danube to the Celtic times. Try one
of the famous Austrian wines produced in this area such as the Grüner Veltliner or Riesling in
one of the inviting wine-taverns or on board of your vessel whilst the scenery is passing by. •

JOIN THE ARTISTIC DIALOGUE.
“Sphere” is thought-provoking work of art by sculptor Stephan Balkenhol. Creating a post-modern perspective in a world cultural heritage
site, a mysterious figure stands on a golden sphere, at eye level with the historic old town, challenging the onlooker to take a view from a
fresh perspective.
