VALENTINE’S DAY WE LOVE YOU LIKE... FLAT MAIL FOR ZOEY!

P I O N EE R DAY
On Monday, March 8th the first grade will be participating in a Pioneer day. The
children in all four class will be experiencing what life was like as a child living in the
1800’s. In each first grade classroom the children will have an opportunity to participate in
activities, such as making butter, square dancing or singing songs, just as the pioneers did.

On this day, Please allow your child to dress as a pioneer. (Please have your
child wear these clothes to school.) DO NOT BUY something to wear. Boys could wear
long sleeved button shirts with dark pants (navy school pants or jeans) and a large
brimmed hat or cowboy hat. Girls could wear a long skirt with an apron, a long sleeved
shirt, and a sunbonnet (if you have one!). Be creative! I have included pictures on the next
page of what children wore last year!

PION E ER L U NCH
To help the children really experience what life was like, we would like to have a
Pioneer Lunch. Since all the first grades will be participating, our lunch will be in the Arts
Entrance, down close to the gyms, from 11:25-11:50. Listed below are many of the possible
choices of pioneer foods. If you are willing to make one of these dishes, or you have a recipe
of your own we would greatly appreciate your help. We also need parents to volunteer to bring
plates, plasticware, or cups. Please contact Leslie Leis if you are able to volunteer. I do have
many of these recipes so if you need me to send a copy home with your child, please let Leslie
or myself know (many of the recipes for this time period can also be found online). Leslie will
be sending updated emails regarding food and items that parents have volunteered to make or
bring. Thank you in advance for your help in making this lunch a success for our kids!
