because labor workers were needed for agricultural ventures

4. Automobiles

a. 1896 Duryea brothers produce a commercially available car


b. Mainly a toy for the rich they were too expensive and most people
worked for so long that they did not have the time to use them
c. 1914 Model T Ford Touring
i. A car for the masses starting in 1908
ii. The assembly line changes manufacturing in the U.S
1. Ford did not invent it, but was the first to utilize it for
manufacturing
2. Workers did not like the monotonous work and Ford had a
hard time keeping workers
3. In order to keep workers, Ford doubled their wages and
gave them an 8 hour day
a. This was criticized by many other big businesses
4. Ford stabilized his work force by doing so and after two
years, doubled his profits
5. Any other companies follow suit and adopt the assembly
line form of manufacturing
iii. Ford kept the prices low and manufactured automobiles so that
they would be accessible for more people
iv. Only one color because it kept the prices down
5. Automobile Culture
