Abstract
This section should be a concise summary of the entire paper. It should briefly
address what was done experimentally and the results obtained. The abstract is
written last and should be complete enough to be read separately from the
remainder of the paper.
Introduction
This section should explain the project and why it is being studied. Pertinent background
information, including the history of the compound, outlining previous research should be
included along with the relevance of the work you completed. Include balanced equations for all
reactions in the experiment. The basic theory of all analytical techniques used should be
explained. Most of your references will be cited in this section.
Experimental Method, Calculations, and Yield
Begin this section by identifying the materials used and any hazards associated with
them. Continue by giving a brief summary of the procedure followed by any observations. The
procedure should be written as an experimental record, not as instructions. Conclude this section
with theoretical and actual yield calculations. This section should be written so that another
scientist could follow your method precisely.
Results and Discussion
This section should be a summary of the completed experiment. Interpret your
experimental results and explain how the stated problem was solved, what questions have been
answered, and what could have been accomplished better. Also, be sure to suggest further
research in the area of study. Provide a detailed analysis of any spectra and answer thoroughly
in paragraph format (no numbers, lists, or bullet points) any of the discussion questions at the
end of the experiment.
Conclusion
Base your final statements on the experimental data. Do not include any irrelevant
material or repeat the discussion.
References
List all references cited in the text in ACS format at the end of the report. A minimum of
3 literature references must be given. Do not cite Wikipedia.
