Colores de sabores/Tasty Colors
Materials  index cards, food magazines, construction paper, glue, scissors, miscellaneous
canned vegetables and fresh fruits

30 minutes, Days 1–3

Build Background
Activate Prior Knowledge  Tell children: Today, you will learn about foods of
different colors./Hoy aprenderán sobre alimentos de distintos colores. Tell children that
foods come in all colors, shapes, sizes, and tastes. Ask: What’s your favorite food?/
¿Cuál es su alimento favorito?/What color is it?/¿De qué color es? Then ask children
what they ate for breakfast that morning and what color it was.

Introduce the Focus Skill: Describing Words  Tell children that

describing words tell how something looks, feels, and tastes. Explain that in
English, describing words go before the object they describe, and in Spanish,
they go after the object they describe (Ex: red tomato/tomate rojo). Generate a list
of describing words in both languages. Write the words on index cards and on
the board. Then distribute the index cards to the class. Say a sentence frame
out loud and have children raise index cards with the appropriate words. For
instance: The apple is ___. La manzana es ___. (Children may hold up index
cards with the words: red/roja, tasty/sabrosa, round/redonda.) Guide children to
form complete sentences: The apple is red./La manzana es roja./The apple is tasty./La manzana es sabrosa./The apple is round./La manzana
es redonda. Then combine all of the describing words in one sentence and have chidren repeat after you: The apple is red, tasty, and
round./La manzana es roja, sabrosa y redonda.

Acquire New Vocabulary  Introduce the following describing words from the book: enormous/enorme,
little/pequeño(a), delicious/delicioso(a), refreshing/refrescante, and dry/seco(a). Explain that in Spanish, some
describing words can end with “e,” “o,” or “a.” These words need to match the objects. For example: calabaza deliciosa (not delicioso).
Write the describing words listed above on index cards. Then distribute index cards, food magazines, construction paper, glue, and
scissors to the class. Have children glue the index cards to the construction paper. Tell the class that they will make a collage by cutting
out and gluing magazine pictures that the word on their card could describe. Then have them share their collages with the class.
Review colors in both languages.

Read and Respond  Display the book. Read the title and author name aloud as you track the print. Point out the colors
in the book as you read. Pause after reading the questions in English and Spanish and ask volunteers to find the answers using
picture and context clues. Discuss the answers as a class. Then have children repeat the color name on each page and count the
items for each color.

60 minutes, Days 4–5

❤HEALTH
Curricular Enrichment: Health  Tell children that today they will do a taste-test of different healthy foods. Provide
canned vegetables, such as peas, carrots, and corn, and fresh fruit, such as bananas, oranges, and grapes. Make sure children
thoroughly wash their hands, then have them taste each food. Ask children to tell you which food they prefer and what its
color is. Encourage them to use complete sentences when giving their answers (My favorite is the yellow banana./La banana amarilla
es mi favorita.).
