Career inCriminal Justice

The career that would interest me if I was to go into a criminal justice field would be a
criminologist. I chose this because I am the type of person who loves to find out why things
happen and took place. This is what a criminologist does he or she investigate why the
crime was committed, they study how criminals are arrested, also they do an examination
on the court system, correctional institution and law enforcement entities as well as explore
the reasons and motivations why societies perceive and respond to criminals in certain
ways. These scholars seek ways to more effectively deal with crime and criminals.
There are three parts to being a criminologist. The first branch, referred to as the sociology
of law, involves the history and types of criminal laws and how they are applied or modified
to suit the dynamic shifts experienced by societies.Secondly, Criminologists study criminal
etiology. This is the study of the causes of criminality. Criminologists endeavor to explain
how people come to engage in criminal acts. They research such questions as: What makes
people commit a certain kind of crime? Why does crime happen more often in certain
neighborhoods? Why would someone join a gang? The third main branch of criminology is
penology, in which Criminologists study how criminals are arrested or detained.
Criminologists are employed as professors in the criminology and criminal justice
departments of colleges and universities. Criminologist can also work as an Academic
Criminologists that teach courses to undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students. Their
curriculum would include such subjects as criminal law, police ethics, and
criminalinvestigation, juvenile delinquency, victims, and gangs. These academicians also
work on research projects. They probe into such areas as drug addiction; the psychological,

physiological, and sociological factors that contribute to criminality; and theories of

criminality. Many of these academicians often conduct their research in conjunction with
government and law enforcement agencies as well as various criminal justice programs.
Academic Criminologists may also be responsible for revising their institutions
criminology curriculum, participating as members of various academic committees, or
being involved with campus and community programs. So this is what a criminologist does,
but he or she cannot do the duties of a lawyer, officer, judge, or defense attorney.
Being a criminologist he or she has to also follow all the ethic codes of the law. They have
to be honest, trustworthy, to succeed at their work; Criminologists must have excellent selfmanagement, organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills. Being objective,
diligent, detail-oriented, inquisitive, fair, and flexible are some personality traits that
successful Criminologists share. There ethical codes are just like all of the other criminal
justice careers codes. In some cases a criminologist can be called as a witness on the stand,
so that is why some lawyers hire them to investigate the case and evidence that the other
side has gather up the present to the judge and the jury. So I decide that a dilemma could
be that they have to gather up enough evidence in a case to see why it was committed. Say
that a person has killed another person due to it being a self-defense case. They have to go
out to the scene collect evidence, talk to the witness, talk to the accused person, and get
everything that they can for the defendant attorney so that their case can be proven as a
self-defense case, and that the accused person can get the appropriate time they would need
to serve, if any time at all. Another dilemma could be they need to prove that a person was
in a mentally ill state of mind and that they have no nature of what they did at the crime
scene. Once again they have to get all of the evidence and information needed to help out

the case they have to talk to witnesses, doctors, family members, do a research on their
history of their parents, childhood life, see if they were on any type of medication, and
much more so that the attorney can have all of this information need for this trial, or the
attorney can call them up as a creditable witness. So being a criminologist you have to be
able to really do a very good research for important information, because someones life is
really depending on what you can come up with in his or her case.Attorneys generally hire
Criminologists who have an established reputation in their area of study. They have many
years of research experience and have published articles and books about their
specialties.Criminologists generally measure success through job satisfaction, professional
recognition, and higher incomes. Those in staff positions can advance to supervisory,
administrative, and managerial positions. Academicians also advance by rising through the
ranks from instructor to full professor, as well as by gaining tenure at their institution.
Tenured professors are assured a teaching job for life. They cannot be fired without just
cause and due process. A typical day for a criminologist would be like an detective, or a
daily teacher teaching a professional day in school to his or her students. They may have
learned different tricks or found different types of things to find evidence for cases, so they
teach these techniques to the students. A criminologist is always updating their education to
stay up with teaching today.
Advancement in the field of criminology depends on education and experience. Doctoral
degrees are generally required for professors, directors of research departments,
administrators of large social agencies or crime prevention projects, and police
commissioners.Comparatively few positions exist for criminologists. The number of new

jobs in the field depends entirely on public funding for crime prevention projects and
Criminologists in social agencies generally work in offices. Those involved in casework may
counsel or interview criminals in prisons, while professionals in the field of criminalistics
work in laboratories. Administrators, such as police commissioners, usually have highprofile jobs and must respond to the public's concerns about crime. Criminologists
generally work more than forty hours per week. The salaries of criminologists vary
according to the responsibilities of their jobs and the size of the population served. Both
training and experience affect their earnings. Beginning criminologists earn about $28,000
per year, while those with experience can earn up to $50,000 per year. Police
commissioners, prison administrators, and others who administer public or private
agencies or crime prevention projects earn higher salaries. Those who work as consultants
on special projects are paid on a fee basis. Retirement plans, health insurance, and paid
holidays and vacations are generally available. I think that this is an easy job to do due to
having to just get the best evidence need for a case or teaching new comers as police
officers, seem to be a very fun job also an interesting one also do to find the evidence
needed, so if you wanted to be a detective or someone who likes playing the I spy game
would be a good job for someone who wants to go into that field of work. This job does not
require you much but it does require your time and patients you will have to have a very
good attitude to work along with people and clients, you really have to know the law and
always do an research on the law as a daily bases due to the law is always changing, or
things is add to the law. The education and the training to become an criminologya

applicants need masters or doctoral degrees in subjects related to criminology, such as

juvenile delinquency, abnormal psychology, and statistics. So in the job of criminology you
must do a very good job in all that you do and work very hard at it. So yes this would be
something that would interest me do the type of work and games I like I also like to watch
that type of show because I find them very interesting to me in seeing how they are shovel
the case I love watching CSI, and First 48 hours they really have a lot of interesting cases
and sometimes the people gets off on them not having enough to prosecute them and a
murder goes with only a slap on the wrist, and is set free isnt that something to do all of
that hard work and the person you want to put behind bars goes free.So you have to dot
your Is and make sure you cross all of your Ts to make sure the job is done right, and
