ICT Information for Students

Conditions of use
In your contract as a student you have agreed to abide by the Conditions of Use of College
Computing Equipment, including access to the Internet and email. These conditions can be
found on the Library+ Moodle page.

IT Services
All students can take advantage of the following IT services:
Unique College username and password
Personal College E-Mail address i.e. (yourstudentid)@stockport.ac.uk
Personal network storage (U drive)
Shared network resources associated with your course (K drive)
Personalised College portal for useful information, links & advice.
Your Moodle - the Colleges VLE (Virtual Learning Environment) associated with your
course/s.
All learning Resources - PCs, Macs, print services, library and online research systems
and the latest Microsoft applications etc.

Your IT Account
All enrolled students are provided with an IT user account and password. The details of your
account are as follows:
USERNAME: Your student number, as found on your college ID card

Student ID number

PASSWORD: ScXXXXXX (XXXXXX being your date of birth in 6 digits)


Eg date of birth is 12 March 1994 so 120394. In this example, the password that must be
entered = Sc120394
IT Services recommend that you change your password the first time you use the IT
facilities.
Your unique personal password should be a memorable word or phrase.

To change your password:


Press ctrl +alt +del after login. Choose change password.

New passwords must:

Be 8 or more characters
Contain at least one capital letter
Contain at least one digit
Not contain any recognisable part of your name

Some notes about changing your password


Resetting your password
To keep your account safe, IT Services require you to change your password at regular intervals
during the year. You will be prompted via a system message about password expiration. Click
Yes to the prompt and enter/re-enter a new 8 character password.

What to do if you forget your password


You will need your ID card to obtain a new password from either your tutor, Library+ or IT
Services.

Email
All students are granted a college email address which takes the format of
(yourstudentid)@stockport.ac.uk
An icon for student email is found on the desktop of each college PC.
Message size restrictions are set at 10MB for both sending and receiving email. Your mailbox
size is limited. Messages will not be sent once your mailbox is 25MB in size; messages will not
be sent or received once your mailbox reaches 30MB.

Home directory
IT Services provide centrally backed up disk space via a Home Directory. This is commonly
referred to as the U: drive. It is intended for the storage of academic work and related material
only. Disk space is restricted to a quota determined by your course. Once your space is full we
ask that you make your own arrangements for saving work. Important data should always be
saved in more than one place eg network drive, memory stick, CD, email, home PC.

Wireless networking
Wireless network access is provided in many areas and coverage is being increased as
resources allow. Details of the wireless access service can be found obtained via Library+.
Before you use the College network with your own device we ask that it has an effective and upto-date anti-virus program and an up-to-date and patched operating system.
Protecting your computer is a requirement of the Conditions of Use of College Computing
Equipment, including access to the Internet and email. Computers which are compromised by
viruses will be banned from the College network.

Print Services

Printing and photocopying is provided throughout College. Devices vary and in some places
there is a charge for the service. Prepayment is necessary via cash loader machines situated in
the Library+.
