The purpose of this report is to estimate the amount of rainfall due to the August 7, 2012
Habagat at the Pampanga River Basin. To do this, point rainfall data estimation was performed to the
points with unknown rainfall depth by the Reciprocal Distance Method. Areal precipitation estimation
was, then, performed to the Pampanga River Basin to determine the average rainfall depth by the
Isohyetal method.
Grid lines were drawn onto the map of the Pampanga River Basin (Appendix A) to standardize
the measurements. The lines have 5-km intervals. The coordinates of the station points were determined
(Appendix B). All rainfall depth values, P(x,y), of all the grid points and midpoints with unknown rainfall
depths were determined, i.e., where x, y = 0, 2.5, 5, . . . , using a program that calculates by Reciprocal
Distance Method(Appendix C). The input of the program is a text file which contains the known
precipitation and coordinates of points in the map. The output of the program is an Excel file containing
the rainfall depth of all points defined by the grid lines. The rainfall depth at the Pampanga Sub-Center,
with coordinates (30, 115), was determined to be 120 mm.
An isohyetal map (Appendix D) is drawn using Excel by the contour map graph option given the
rainfall depth values of all the points on the map. The boundary of the Pampanga River Basin was drawn
in the contour map produced by plotting the points where the boundary intersects the grid lines and
connecting these points. To determine the area bounded by two successive isohyets, the grid squares
bounded by these isohyets were counted. The areal estimate of rainfall depth was then determined by the
Isohyetal Method. The average rainfall depth estimate of the whole Pampanga River Basin is 74.19622
mm.
Errors in calculation may have been brought by drawing of grid lines, drawing of basin boundary,
misreading the station coordinates, and counting of grid squares. Nevertheless, the output produced
presents a good estimate of the rainfall depth at the Pampanga River Basin.
