Please Note The description of the Colleges courses in our prospectus and on our website represents the Colleges aspirations as to what will be delivered. However, for various reasons, the courses actually delivered may be different. For example: funding for a course (whether from the Government or from the Colleges charitable donations or other sources of income) may be reduced or withdrawn; there may be insufficient interest in a course which means that it is uneconomic or unviable to deliver; there may be a change to the Colleges other resources, such as staff or accommodation, which affect the delivery of a course. A change could involve the replacement of a course with a new course, variations to course content or structure, the merger of courses, or the withdrawal of a course. The College may make a change to a course for the reasons set out above, or for other reasons where it is reasonable for the College to do so. If there is a change to a course about which you have expressed an interest, the College will let you know as soon as possible. a word from
the principal
In what are quite challenging times across Scotland and the UK, Angus College has proven itself to be an inspiring and resilient College in more ways than one. Academic year 10/11 proved to be one of the most successful in the College's history. There are many notable examples of this, such as record levels of student activity, the best educational participation rates in mainland Scotland, student performance rates were above national average and a record number of National Awards. The College continues to receive glowing reviews from Education Scotland inspectors, so when you come to Angus College, you can be sure that the educational experience you receive with us will be first-class in every way. Angus College really meets the needs of the diverse communities it serves, and in session 11/12 almost 10,000 people from across Angus and surrounding areas took the chance to learn something new at one of our five Learning Centres. One area often commented on by our students is that we listen to what they have to say, and we do our best to try and improve things on an ongoing basis. It is our students who form the heart of our organisation and we really do want to hear your views. Another aspect of College life which is particularly valued by students is the opportunity for many to be involved in international student exchanges or international fundraising and volunteering. The College's strong links with Don Bosco College in Malawi is a real focus for student fundraising where we are contributing to the building of a new girls hostel. Life as a student here at Angus is one which I know you will enjoy and also one which I'm sure will give you the stepping stone required whether your goal is to find employment or progress to university. We want you to look back on your time with us as a real milestone in your life when you realised that for you - anything was possible. I look forward to personally welcoming you to our College in August 2012.

I left school at 16 years old and never had the opportunity to go to university; this was something I always wanted to do. Id spent 30 years on the practical, hands-on side of my career and wanted an educational qualification to back this up. When the opportunity came along it was an offer I knew I could not refuse. Having a degree has given me the confidence to develop myself within the company and has confirmed that I am more capable than I thought. The course is very enjoyable and broken into manageable modules. Time passes very quickly, so enjoy it.

The degree appealed to me as I was keen to study at this level in a flexible way while still holding down a full-time job. Increased confidence is by far the greatest benefit from undertaking the qualification, not only confidence in my abilities, but also increased confidence to undertake more complicated tasks and roles. I would encourage others to undertake this qualification, although I would advise people to ensure that they have time to dedicate to the course work as it is difficult to achieve while working full-time but it is highly rewarding and well worth the effort!

I had an experience recently where a professor was giving a lecture to 2nd year Politics students on how to structure an essay and I can honestly say that there was not one suggestion that had not been made to me during my HND Social Sciences course at Angus College. This exemplifies perfectly the quality of the preparation for university life that this course provided. The structure of the course ensured that I am now able to work independently when necessary, research a topic thoroughly and effectively, understand how to reference my work properly and many other key skills for learning. The time spent at Angus College has proved invaluable and I am so grateful for all of the support and encouragement which I received from the staff on the Social Sciences team, as well as from the superb library staff. It was a life changing experience which I look back on with pride and a real sense of achievement.

Holly had worked as a florist for six years before deciding to follow her ambitions to return to study and retrain to become a nurse. The thought of going straight to university and back into studying was daunting, so I decided to start off by completing both the NC Health Care at Higher Level and HNC Health Care courses at Angus College. These courses were great and my tutors were very supportive and inspirational. This knowledge and experience enabled me to progress to Year 2 of the BSc in Nursing at the University of Abertay. It has definitely been the right decision.

I recently made the massive decision to take a voluntary redundancy package from an office job in order to follow a lifelong ambition to work in social care. Initially the thought of coming to College was quite scary, but the tutors were really helpful and encouraged me to take a distance learning module as a taster in preparation for full-time study. The HNC Social Care is the perfect course choice to enable my career change. I love the balance between classroom-based and practical hands-on experience and I am so glad I made the decision to follow this route!

Steven first came to Angus College as part of the School Link programme not knowing what he wanted to do.
I chose to study painting & decorating and began to realise a keen interest in this subject. The support I received whilst studying was fantastic and alongside my day-to-day job as an apprentice painter and decorator I now help to teach 3rd and 4th year pupils on the Skills for Work programme at the College. This has allowed me to give back what the tutors gave to me.
He had far more potential within himself than he ever believed. Steven's hard work and commitment has been formally recognised through a string of national awards including the prestigious 2009 Dulux Decorators Young Painter of the Year 1st place award. A very unassuming individual Steven has now become a confident and professional tradesman who has portrayed the virtues of hard work and learning a skill through an SQA qualification. Steven has also been the recipient of the Angus Ambassador Youth Award at a glittering ceremony at the Carnoustie Golf Hotel.

I have an interest in renewable energy, thats why I started the NC Engineering Systems course knowing that the different areas the course covers would give me the basic skills and knowledge that would be required in this Engineering sector. This has let me progress onto HNC Engineering Systems, which has a smooth transition from course to course and now allows me to apply for higher level jobs.

ESOL courses are very important for all foreign people who wish to set up their life in Scotland. Through these courses we dont just learn the English language, we also learn how to integrate and about citizenship. From these courses we can progress onto further education, higher education or employment. The ESOL course gave me the opportunity to learn English and apply for the National Certificate Administration course. I want to study at a higher level and I wouldnt have been able to do this if it wasnt for the ESOL course. As well as studying I work as a volunteer helping other people with language skills and promoting multi-culturalism. Angus College and the amazing ESOL tutors have allowed me to better my life chances. I would like everyone to have this chance.

Rachel studied the NC Hairdressing after NC Art where she had gained an understanding of colour and awareness of shape and design. A committed student she was successful in several competitions and achieved a silver medal at the World Skills Challenge this year.
Since choosing Hairdressing as a career I have strived to be the best I can be. Being determined and getting involved at College is paying off for me with the results I have achieved, especially the World Skills. I thoroughly enjoyed my time at College and would recommend it to anyone - its worth the hard work.

Gordon successfully completed three years of study to achieve the Angus College Certificate in Professional Cookery followed by the Angus College Diploma in Culinary Arts.
I have always had a keen interest in becoming a chef and couldnt imagine doing anything else. My experience at College was a good one and my tutors taught me so much and were a real inspiration - strict but fair! My current job at Forbes of Kingennie is challenging and rewarding especially when involved in catering for weddings. In the future I would love to to move to London and specialise in patisserie.

skillzone
I joined SkillZone as a full-time School Link student when I had very low self-esteem and confidence. I was bullied at school and felt quite isolated, making the whole experience very negative. SkillZone helped develop my confidence and gave me a sense of direction. I received lots of support and was encouraged to explore different opportunities whilst at the same time developing my employability skills. I achieved a range of qualifications which prepared me very well for my current course on the NC Administration programme.

I studied at Angus College for 2 years completing my HNC and HND in Sports Coaching and Development. I left school after 6th year and went straight into the HN system and now after completing the HNC and HND I have gone into 3rd year at Abertay studying BSc (Hons) Sports Coaching. Studying at Angus College has provided me with a great stepping stone for moving onwards to university. I built up a great relationship with the lecturers in the department and also made some great friends in my class, some of which I am now studying with at Abertay. Angus College gave me some great opportunities through work experience modules; I am now into my third year working for active schools. There are also opportunities to gain different qualifications, I myself have gained a level 3 SFA coaching badge as well as a level 1 in Basketball but there are many more on offer. Angus College also helped me gain a place coaching overseas. Im recently back from a two-month trip to the West coast of America coaching football. I spent 7 of the 8 weeks coaching football in different areas of San Francisco, Portland and Seattle and also making time to visit LA. It was Angus College who opened my eyes to this and if it wasnt for them I would have missed out on what I consider to be the best experience of my life so far. Now that I am at Abertay Im looking forward to gaining my BSc Hons in Sports Coaching and then in turn moving onto a post graduate degree in teaching. Once this is completed I plan to become a P.E teacher. The HNC/D Sports Coaching and Development programme is a great course to further opportunities - not just of a better job but as it provided me, it is an excellent course to move onto university and gain further knowledge and qualifications.

I joined the AUS course to gather information and it gave me a good insight into all the forces and what they had to offer. Within the course I learned different skills from first aid to map reading and gained a high level of fitness which has helped me to progress through Royal Marines training. Upon finishing my training I have completed several training exercises in the UK.

I have been studying at Angus College for two years and it has been great. I have learned lots of new things being here. Ive had lots of laughs too! One of the best things for me was making friends and knowing we will still be friends when I finish. I want to work with animals when I leave my course and I just want to say, Thank-you, Angus College you have been really good for me.

Angus College is the best! I have learned more here than anywhere else. Over the past two years on the Moving on Course I have built up my confidence and learned many new things. I hope that I can use my remaining time here to learn much more. Next year I hope to get into a full time Art course.

Since coming to College on an introductory course in 2008 I have received brilliant support for my dyslexia and to build my personal confidence and skills. I feel that without the support from a range of student services staff and my tutors I would not have been able to progress with my studies. I liked the fact that the support I received was tailored around me and what I needed and this has worked really well.

Funding Applications
Prior to you starting your full-time course, you will receive Bursary forms if you are studying a non-advanced programme or a Grant/Loan application if you are studying HNC or HND. It is important that you follow the instructions on these application forms carefully and in time, or your funding support may be affected.
Induction
Prior to the start of your course you will be sent an induction pack highlighting your induction day and will contain lots of useful information about starting College. If you have any concerns at this point, we advise you to contact Central Admissions on 01241 432622/432777/432810.
Criminal Convictions
Angus College actively promotes equality of opportunity and we are keen to encourage a diverse student population with a wide range of talents, backgrounds and experiences. Having a criminal conviction will not necessarily prevent you from gaining a place at the College, but this is important information for us to consider as part of the admissions process. As part of the interview process for your course you will be asked to declare if you have any relevant criminal convictions. A relevant conviction is defined as: Those convictions for offences against the person, whether of a violent or sexual nature, and convictions for offences involving unlawfully supplying controlled drugs or substances where the conviction concerns commercial drug dealing or trafficking. Unless the nature of the course requires us to ask questions about your entire criminal record (such as Care courses), you are not required to tell us about 'spent' convictions as defined in the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974. If you have a relevant conviction, you will not be automatically excluded from the application process. However we may want to consider your application further or ask for more information before we make a decision.
94
FE Bursaries
If you undertake a full-time National Certificate course you may be eligible for a bursary to help you finance your study. The Bursary may consist of a maintenance award, course expenses and travel costs (if applicable). Most students may receive a bursary for a full-time National Certificate course provided they meet the residency requirements. Once you have been accepted on to a full-time National Certificate programme, all the necessary funding application documents will be sent to you.
We strongly advise that these are returned to the College at the earliest opportunity to ensure there is no hold up in the processing of your application prior to the start of the course.
Information correct at the time of printing. Funding policy is reviewed annually and students should be aware this may change.
