adaptacin.

acadmicos/personales y objetivos profesionales.
OBJETIVOS ACADMICOS/PERSONALES.
-

saben hablar bien espaol.

2.2. METODOLOGA
Tambin he usado varios diccionarios multilinges como

Este apartado no he
What to visit: aqu estn descritos todos los lugares y monumentos ms

CAPTULO 3
TEXTOS TRADUCIDOS

3.1. GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATION

The municipality of Medina Sidonia is located in the province of Cdiz and bordering on

3.2. HISTORY AND HERITAGE

Medina Sidonia is a 3000-year-old city, awarded with the Prize for the Embellishment
of Andalusian Villages and declared Historic and Artistic Site and Place of Cultural
Interest in 2001.
Visiting Medina Sidonia is like taking a stroll through history, finding and knowing the
remains and traces of the different civilisations that are part of the historical memory
and legacy of the city.
-7-

Rodrguez y Prez de Arenaza, Gloria

It is well-known for its beautiful whitewashed houses, its barred balconies and
windows, its prized and delicious handmade sweets and rich cuisine. Medina Sidonia is
one of the most historical and monumental cities in the province of Cdiz.
Due to its location as strategic enclave, it has played an important role in the history
of the region.
3.3. PLACES TO VISIT
3.3.1. ARCHAEOLOGICAL HERITAGE
a) Archaeological site Cerro del Castillo (Conjunto Arqueolgico Cerro del
Castillo)
The Castle of Medina Sidonia is located on the top of the hill, called Cerro del Castillo,
which is being excavated now.
There are three superimposed fortifications. The archaeological intervention that has
been done in this area, show three superimposed fortifications: remains of the Roman
military castellum, ruins of the Arab fortress and traces of a medieval castle.
Vestiges of the Bronze Age
There are many material remains in this Historical and Archaeological Site including
handmade ceramics, some fragments of amphorae and polished, carved lithic works
belonging to the Final Bronze Era, which are traces of human existence on the hilltop
of the current city of Medina Sidonia.
Roman military castellum
Since the arriving of Romans, or a bit later, it is believed that the construction of this
military castellum started. Most part of its walled perimeter has been unearthed and the
wall is 2 metres high in some points.
This Roman castellum was still used during the height of the Roman Empire,
although its function was more symbolic than real, and became a reflection of the
power of Rome in this territory. It is the only reference of these characteristics in Spain.
The Arab fortress
In the 11th century, the Almoravids built a new castle at the same level as the
ancient one. Some sections still in situ and several parts of the wall fallen on the
outside of the fortress have been documented.
Medieval castle
The building of a new castle started in the middle of the 15 th century, by the first
Duke of Medina Sidonia, who wanted to improve the city defence.

b) The Roman road (La Calzada Romana)

Over the centuries, a large amount of archaeological remains have been found in
Medina Sidonia. The city was built on the hill more than two thousand years ago and
was called Asido-Caesarina.
Recent excavations due to public works reveal that the Roman city achieved an
extraordinary urban glory and show the true extent of the ancient city. A great example
is a stretch of a Roman road discovered in 1997, which runs four metres below lamo
Street level.
It was built with large stone slabs; it comprises two pavements and a five metres
wide road allowing two vehicles to get through.
Along the central line of the street, under the flagstone pavement, there is a sewer
which is nearly a metre high. This sewer channeled rainwater and local sewage from
buildings and fountains from the city.
A pair of game boards has also been found engraved on the slabs of one of the
pavements. Both Roman children and adults were keen on these games.
The enhancement of this place not only has been an important step to the historical
and urbanistic knowledge of the ancient Medina Sidonia, but has also become a
cultural space that can be enjoyed by all.

c) The Roman archaeological site (Conjunto Arqueolgico Romano)

Opening times: from 10.30am to 14.00pm / from 17.30pm to 19.30pm
They are hydraulic constructions from the 1st C.A.D., with a total of 20 metres of
underground galleries, which worked as a sewage system in Roman times. That shows
the level of urbanization of the city Asido-Caesarina.
They were discovered in 1969 and were emptied and finally abandoned. It was not
until 1991 when the investigation and the enhancement of this place started.
There are three different structures: sewers, Roman rooms and cryptoporticus. The
main sewers are located on the city outskirts, where all smaller sewers run into.

3.3.2. ARCHITECTURAL HERITAGE

a) Santa Mara la Mayor la Coronada church (Iglesia Santa Mara la Mayor la
Coronada)
Summer opening times: from 11.00am to 14.00pm / from 17.00pm to 20.00pm
Telephone: +34 956410329 / Entrance fee: 25
It is a Gothic-Renaissance temple from the 16th century, with a tower finished in the
17th century. The altarpiece is an authentic jewel, as well as a carved image of the
Christ of Forgiveness (Cristo del Perdn) from 1679, by Pedro Roldn.
It was declared Historic-Artistic Monument, listed as a Property of Cultural Interest in
1931.
It is a Gothic-Plateresque Andalusian style building from the first half of the 16th
century. Some parts were built over the ancient mosque.
The temple has three naves and it has a Latin cross plan.
The church has three entrances, two outside entrances (the main faade and the
church door) and another indoor through the cloister. The oldest faade is the one in
the castle, which is not in use because of a fire nowadays, but it had a great
importance in earlier times. It was the door through which the Dukes of Medina Sidonia
came to take possession of the city.
The main altarpiece is Plateresque style. It is composed of 22 histories. It is 15
metres high and 680 metres wide and it has 168 images, 80 of them are full-length.

This altarpiece has 40 columns that hold the different stories. In 1774, while the own
organist of the church was trying to clean it, he darkened the ancient gilding. It took 31
years to build it and the works started in 1553.
Nave of the Epistle or Conception (Nave de la Epstola o de la Concepcin). The
ground level on the outside reaches just below the window. Most of the wall is under
the ground.
The altar was built after 1766 and is gimmicky Rococo style. The paintings on agate
and marble are Italian. The other six paintings are of different styles and sizes.
The Last Supper (Santa Cena) is a Roque Baldulque work, one of the authors of the
altarpiece. It is from 1554 and is Gothic style.
The castle door was used to be opened for solemn functions like the investiture of
the Dukes of Medina Sidonia and visits of the bishop. This door was accidentally
burned by some children in the summer of 1981.
The chorus is Baroque style and it is composed by a set of chairs of cedar and
mahogany. It dates from 1732 and is a work made by Juan de Gtica.

b) Santiago church (Iglesia de Santiago)

It was built in the early 16th century, outstanding for its Mudejar coffering; Santiago el
Mayor is the Patron Saint of the city and Spains Patron.
The original chapel was in the suburbs. It was built beyond the city walls. Its origins
date from 1384 and it blends an Andalusian-Mudejar style with an early Gothic style. It
has a rectangular ground plan and is composed of three naves with pointed double
arcades that rest on robust columns.

and the convent, adding even a brick tower that was finished in 1703 in La plaza de la
Cruz, where it is nowadays.
After the Victorios had left, the convent became a school and houses for the
teachers in the middle of the 19th century. Finally, it turned into a private property.
The church was burned in 1873 and reopened for the religious cult in 1875.
The church has three naves and a large dome. The central nave is covered by
barrel vaults with lunettes. The first floor has galleries and a choir.
It is thought that the images are works by Martnez Montas. The main altarpiece with
the image of Virgin Victory (Virgen de la Victoria), it could be from the school of Pedro
de Ribera.

d) San Juan de Dios church (Iglesia San Juan de Dios)

The church is settled over the land of an ancient chapel, where the plague-ridden
cemetery was located, beyond the city walls.
In 1650, the priests founded a hospital there, which was finished in the early 18th
century. This hospital was the most important hospital in the region. Nowadays, the
main courtyard and the church are still preserved.
The church, as we see it today, was the last part to be built. It is an ensemble
dedicated to the conventual life, with a cloister and rooms that took in sick, and the
church. It has an open floor and a single nave. It is also covered by a barrel vault with
lunettes and a beautiful dome, which take up almost the half of the church. There are
four chapels in the transept and two niches on the side walls.
The main altar has a Baroque altarpiece made of golden wood.
Chapels:

Chapel of Santsimo: located in the first chapel of the transept to the right of the
main altar. It has an altarpiece and a sanctuary, all made of marble and jasper
with Doric pilasters. It dates from the early 17th century.

Chapel of la Dolorosa: located in the first chapel of the transept to the left of the
main altar. It has an altarpiece that dates from the late 18th century, made of
cedar and mahogany.

Chapel of Santsimo Cristo de la Reconciliacin: located in the second chapel of

the transept to the right of the main altar. It is what remains of the original chapel
from the 16th century and which was integrated in the church when it was built in
1689.

The sacristy is rectangular, covered by a barrel vault with lunettes. It has a drawer
chest made of pine with a mahogany cover. This work was made by Alonso Cano.

e) Chapel of Santos Mrtires (Ermita de los Santos Mrtires)

The Chapel of Santos Mrtires is from the Visigothic period and it is the oldest chapel
of Andalusia; it dates from the 403 a.C. It is situated on the outskirts of Medina Sidonia,
surrounded by vegetation.
This chapel was a former Roman house that belonged to a Roman patrician called
Lepero. The house had several rooms; one of them communicated with a tower. This
tower was built in different ages: the base is Roman and the top is from the Arab
period.
The Christian chapel, 630 a.C. The chapel was rebuilt and blessed by the bishop of
Assido Pimenio, on the 16th December, 630. We know about this date because it is
written on a gravestone that is used as the threshold of the current door of the sacristy.
Note the inscription of Lepero, which says Lepero re vonit sed sacrv, that means
Lepero renovated it and offered it to God. It was carved on a Roman pedestal that
was used to form the second column of the church. In the door columns and the choir,
we find Roman and Corinthian capitals.

f) Beln arch (Arco de Beln)

It is also known as Puerta de Beln. It takes you to the heart of the medieval village
next to some stretches of the old wall, a fortified tower and the Stables of the Duke
(Caballerizas del Duque).
This is another gateway to the walled enclosure, whose name was Gypsy Arch
(Arco de los Gitanos) in the 18th century.
Its current name comes from the altar situated at the internal top part that gives
shelter to an image of Mara Santsima de Beln, which was in the Agustinas chorus of
Saint Christopher Convent (Convento San Cristbal) in 1860.

It is an Arabic gate in the purest Muslim style, with a horseshoe arch and a grand
stairway. It dates from the 10th century.
This is one of the gateways to the walled enclosure and the most representative
symbol of Medina Sidonia. Its construction dates from the Caliphate period, around the
10th century. It has two pointed horseshoe arches and one of them rests over columns
that belonged to the Hrcules temple (Templo de Hrcules). The ensemble is made of
ashlar stones that were found in the municipality.
There is a watchtower on a side of this entrance. There is a stepped street to save
the different levels between one side of the arch and the other one.
The oldest name was Puerta de la Salada, which was the same name of a nearby
fountain. The name Arco de la Pastora by which is known now, comes from an image
that is still preserved in a niche on one of the inner sides of the arch.
It was refurbished recently.

It is known like this because it was built in the east, where the sun rises every
morning.
We know about the renovation of the walls and gates of the village at various
periods.

Town Hall (Ayuntamiento)

It is a building from the 17th century in the Mannerist style and its author is Andrs
Crdenas. Here we can find the Municipal Historical Archive.
In 1673 the building works started. It is Baroque; the entrance portico has arches
resting on columns in the lower section.
The second floor is neoclassical. In the main front, it has a balcony that goes from
end to end and windows crowned with triangular pediments, separated by pilasters.
The top floor is a work from the 19th century, where the windows are separated in
the same way than in the second floor.
The building is crowned with the coat of arms of the city in stone and the clock.

j)

La Alameda square (La Alameda)

It is located in Plaza de Espaa and it was named like this for the existence of poplars
surrounding the square.
The first historical reference dates from the 16th century. Although we can say that,
during the Roman Empire, the city forum could be in the same place where the
Alameda is nowadays.
After the arrival of Islam, the city was located inside the walls. The Roman city
outside the town was abandoned.
In the 18th century, it was known as Plaza de la Muela. They made an enclosed
area, where the only access was through the Town Hall arch and another similar arch
that connected the square with a street, which correspond to the current San Juan
Street.
Between 1837 and 1868, the Alameda suffered important refurbishments in order to
adapt it to its new function as a recreational area.
It had different names between the 19th and 20th centuries.

k) Food Market (Plaza de Abastos)

It dates from 1871. It has a structure of porticoes and a certain Mudejar-Plateresque
style that reminds of a main square.
What can you buy in a Plaza de Abastos? It is a food market so there, you can find
all kind of perishable food like meat, fish, fruits and vegetables. Other shops sell bread,
dairy products, flowers, foodstuffs in general and also handmade products or
souvenirs. As you see, there is everything in one place!
The work started in 1871 and finished in 1876. It was built over the vegetable
garden of the Saint Christopher Convent and thanks to the bishop of Cdiz Arriete y
Llanos.
It is located between San Juan Street and Varos Street and it has two accesses,
one in each street.
It was refurbished recently.

Stables of the Duke (Caballerizas del Duque)

It dates from the 16th century. After being restored, they are used as an assembly and
exhibitions hall.
These stables have a single nave with stone walls, a half-barrel vaulted brick ceiling,
one door and several windows.
Since the 16th century, they have had different uses like a headquarter of the Royal
Garrison and surveillance of contraband, a playhouse in the 18th century and a cockpit.
It is made known in writing as a property of the Ducal House by the end of the 19th
century. Then, it was bought by the resident Juan Ortega Olmo and finally, he sold it to
the Town Hall in 1938. It was restored in 1994.

Everyone knows it like Monjas de Abajo and it has an excellent bakery.
The church is small because its bigger space is reserved for a nuns choir. It has a
single nave widened in the transept, with a dome over arches and pendentives. The
other part is covered by a barrel vault with lunettes. The convent is located around a
squared courtyard.
It is a Baroque work, like the altars with wreathed columns.

The works were conducted by master architect Juan Bautista de la Rica, from
Medina Sidonia. The church has an octagonal plan and forms two rectangular spaces.
The altarpiece in the main chapel is a work made by the artists Juan Batista
Severiano and Francisco Bartolom and it is from the 17th century. It is divided into two
main horizontal parts and three vertical streets, formed by wreathed columns.

3.3.3. ETHNOGRAPHIC HERITAGE

Among the actions carried out by the City Council of Medina Sidonia on Cultural
Heritage, a preferred action around the Ethnographic Heritage is established. Its
objectives are the recovery, conservation, protection, enhancement and dissemination
of the goods comprising our newest Cultural Heritage.
There is a project of an Ethnographic Museum, whose main purpose is to show and
disseminate the way of life, customs, traditions and the economy of the inhabitants of
Medina Sidonia and its surroundings in the last few centuries.
In recent years, the Town Hall has been collecting objects, some of them have been
acquired and others donated. These materials are different pieces related to farming
activities as the main axis of traditional economy in the area.
The current document collection also has an important collection of furniture and
basic tools related to domestic sphere.
3.3.4. DOCUMENTARY HERITAGE
The document collection of the Municipal Historical Archive is a source of pride for all
the people in Medina Sidonia. This document collection has been preserved over the
centuries and is an authentic paper treasure, which is jealously guarded in the Town
Hall.
The Municipal Historical Archive of Medina Sidonia was originally located in a room
set up for it in the Town Hall, in 1846.
-20-

TFG-TUR.

It is considered one of the best local archives for the modern and contemporary
ages. This is because of the volume and quality of the documentation, as well as its
excellent state of preservation.
It was expected that the Archive would be moved to the new facilities of the Town
Hall, but they were being restored.
In 1994, once the works of restoring were finished, the orderly move of part of the
documentation preserved in the Archive to the new facilities started. These facilities
were prepared for the deposit of such a rich documental legacy and, of course ready
for consults, studies and dissemination.
After the ordering and placing of all the historical documentation, the Municipal
Historical Archive was permanently located there. This Archive holds the most ancient
documentation still preserved in the document collection of the municipality. This is
around 45% of the total (900 files of the 2,000 existing).
Currently, this document collection is being digitalized.

Department for Culture and Festivities organises a big party where all children go. At
the entrance of the Town Hall, children give their letters with gift requests to the Royal
Postman. In this way, the Three Wise Men know what children want for Christmas and
bring them their gifts on the night before Epiphany.
Big parade of the Three Wise Men
Finally, the 5th of January in the afternoon, Their Majesties the Three Wise Men go
through the main streets of Medina Sidonia in their floats, distributing thousands of

The Virgin of Peace is the patron saint of the town and the saint festivity is celebrated
on January 24th.
c) Carnival (Carnaval)
Many and varied events are held during the week of Carnival like children parades,
piatas (a piata is a decorated papier container filled with sweets, candies or small
toys and it has to be usually broken by children as a part of the celebration),
gastronomic tasting, performances by local groups on the street and so on.
The activities start on Saturday night with the announcement of the Carnival in the
municipal marquee located in the Plaza de Espaa. After the announcement, the local
bands play there and also some of the prized groups in the Concurso del Gran Teatro
Falla in Cdiz.
The children parade is celebrated the first Saturday of carnival at 12am and
hundreds of disguised children go through the streets of the city centre as part of a
funny children parade.
After the parade and during all day, there are many activities in the municipal
marquee.
-25-

Rodrguez y Prez de Arenaza, Gloria

During the next week, the schools organise their own parades.
The second weekend, on Saturday at 17pm, the Grand Parade of Humor is held in
Medina Sidonia. Hundreds of people take part in this show of humor that every year
attracts more and more visitors. Many floats parade accompanied by their groups, who
wear costumes that have been preparing for months. After the Grand Parade, the
municipal marquee hosts the awards ceremony of costumes and a dance that lasts all
night, livened up with an orchestra.
The day of the piatas is Sunday, although it is also celebrated during the first
weekend of the carnival.
Moreover, as the end of the party, there are many performances by local groups and
others that come from the carnival of Cdiz. It is celebrated in the municipal marquee

The fairground is located in the Prado de la Feria that is decorated during these
days to welcome thousands of visitors, who enjoy the rich cuisine of the city.
The municipal stall has many activities for everyone during the celebration of the
fair.
The Beef Cattle Fair (Bovisidonia) and Horses (Equisidonia) of Medina Sidonia is
one of the most ancient livestock fairs of Andalusia, whose origin dates back to the 13 th
century.
Bovisidonia is a competition of horses of Pure Spanish Race.

-26-

TFG-TUR.

The Route of the Monuments includes churches, convents, the Roman

archaeological site and the Roman road. In 2007 on its Third Edition, the ruins of the
Castle of Medina Sidonia were also opened for the public in its first consolidation phase
and enhancement. The guided visit had explanations over the archaeological actions
and discoveries carried out.
Concerning the Route of the Courtyards and Patios, you can visit nearly 25 private
properties among asidonenses neighbors houses and courtyards of hotel
establishments. In this walk through the courtyards we can find patios of stately homes,
others typical andalusian and courtyards that are museums in themselves.
These Open Door Days have the celebration of Expomedina too, where
asidonenses entrepreneurs and shopkeepers show their produce.
h) The Live Nativity (Beln Viviente)
The Live Nativity is the main event during Christmas time and it takes place on the
Sunday before Christmas Day.
More than 600 residents of all ages are responsible for giving life to the 66 scenes
that form the Live Nativity. You can find it through all the typical streets and squares of
the Historic and Artistic Site of Medina Sidonia.
Furthermore, from mid-December to the 6th of January, the Local Government
Department for Culture and Festivities also organises a complete program of activities
for everybody like workshops for children, contests of Christmas carols and pastry
competitions.
3.8. GASTRONOMY AND CONFECTIONERY
Our well-deserved fame, not only for the excellent pastries but also for the great variety
of dishes that are still cooked these days, have turned Medina Sidonia into a
gastronomic reference in the province and even beyond. These dishes are offered in
our bars, restaurants and inns, following the recipes that have passed from mothers to
daughters and linked to the exquisite basic ingredients of our municipality.
a) Tapas (Tapas)
The tapas and aperitivos (snacks) are a deeply rooted tradition in Medina Sidonia and
Andalusia. These are small pieces of some delicacy of the area and suitable for white
or red wine, beer or very cold Jerez wines.
The word tapa means cover and has its origin in slices of bread that the tavern
landlord put over the glass of wine to preserve it from flies and dust between sips.
Then, someone had the idea to put something appetising over that slice of bread,
giving rise to the tapas.
b) Snacks (Aperitivos)
Aperitivos like good cold cuts (chacinas or embutidos) of our area, olives or some great
tapas of delicious meat stews, fishes like pescato frito, snails, roasted peppers and
more tapas are typical of our bars.

-27-

Rodrguez y Prez de Arenaza, Gloria

c) Stews (Guisos)
The gastronomic history of Medina Sidonia is full of flavor. There are many bars and
restaurants in the town where you can enjoy the excellent stews that have as main
ingredients some of the wild products cultivated in our fields. You will be satisfied with a
cabbage stew, a puchero (a stew with noodles or rice, meat, vegetables and fat), a
tagarninas stew (which is a kind of wild asparagus), an artichokes stew and a stew of
asparagus with rice among others.

d) Meat (Carne)
When we talk about meat in the asidonense gastronomy, the variety of dishes is
enormous because of the wide range of products and also because of the nuances that
each restaurant gives to their dishes. In this way, we highlight the following products
cooked in different ways:

Game meat: rabbit, hare, deer, partridge bird, wild boar

Poultry: chicken, turkey, duck, pheasant

Pork products: cracklings, sirloins, cutlets, chops

Bovine: retinto meat, oxtail, veal, beef

e) Local nails (Caracoles de nuestra tierra)

They have a special consideration in the whole province thanks to its quality. This
delicacy is a seasonal product.

f) Seafood (Pescado y marisco)

Medina Sidonia is located close to the coastline towns of the province of Cdiz and the
seafood, the white and oily fish, clams, mussels and calamari, occupy an extraordinary
place in the gastronomy of the town.

g) And, what about desserts? (Y los postres?)

Medina Sidonia is a reference in confectionery from time immemorial. The aroma that
comes from its bakeries spread throughout the whole town, where homemade tradition
is kept since the Arab times, force the visitors to buy delicious pastries and sweets.
There is a great variety of products that you can eat at all times of the year,
excepting mantecados and polvorones, which are typical Christmas sweets.
You can taste the exquisite tortas pardas (made with an almond paste filled with
squash jam and it has the form of a small basket), the delicious amarguillos (like a
marzipan with bitter almond and sugar), pionates (whose main ingredient is the pine
nut), yemas (made with egg yolk and sugar), pastries and the most famous asidonense
sweet that is the alfajor.
The alfajor of Medina Sidonia is a traditional Arabic sweet, which dates many
centuries back and has a recipe that has been passed from generation to generation. It
was originally called alaj that comes from the Arabic word al-has, which means
filling. Nowadays it is still called like this.
The production of the alfajor
Its ingredients are all natural: pure honey, almonds, hazelnuts, flour, bread crumbs
and spices like coriander, clove, aniseed, sesame and cinnamon.
-28-

TFG-TUR.

Its elaboration is entirely handmade and the old Arabic recipe is still used.
Alfajor de Medina Sidonia is a Protected Geographical Indication (Indicacin
Geogrfica Protegida). The Association of Producers of the Alfajor de Medina Sidonia
requested the recognition as Protected Geographical Indication in order to protect and
promote this product. Its regulations were approved by the Andalusian Regional
Government in 2004. Its recognition as Protected Geographical Indication reflects the
singularity of the product, protecting its name from possible imitations. Currently, there
are three confectionery companies that make Alfajor de Medina Sidonia.
