As you know, our Bishop,

Robert McElroy, was with
us last Saturday, August 29,
for his first pastoral visit to
our parish. His visit was
very inspiring and encouraging. I thank all of you
for attending and participating in the various parish activities such as the Installation Mass and the
parish family picnic. The bishop was inspired by
your faith and your participation in the Eucharistic
celebration. The liturgy was well organized. I especially want to thank David Stevens and the
choir. The Summer Night event was amazing.
The school, the pastoral council members and other parish organizations spent many days in planning and organizing the event. It was well planned
and the food was delicious. I was particularly happy to see so many families and children in attendance. A word of thanks and appreciation goes especially to Patricia Payne and her team.
The readings today offer us an invitation to become humble instruments of healing in Jesus
hand by giving a voice to the voiceless, the needy
and the marginalized in our society. Todays
Scripture also invites us to open our ears to hear
the word of God and to allow the Holy Spirit to
loosen our tongues to convey the Good News of
Gods love and salvation to others. The first reading reminds us that God's eyes are constantly foSCRIPTURE READINGS

especially cares for "the frightened, the blind, the deaf,
the lame, the mute," and He encourages them to "be
strong and fearless by reminding them of His constant care. (Isaiah 35:4-7.) This is why, in todays
second reading, St. James the Apostle gives us
some basic and challenging principles of social justice. He exhorts Christians to show no partiality
based on external appearances but to practice
Gods "preferential option for the poor." He warns
the faithful against scorning or shaming the poor
while showing special consideration to the rich.
(James 2:1-5.) Todays Gospel describes how Jesus, by healing a deaf and mute man, fulfills Isaiahs Messianic prophecy, "The eyes of the blind shall
be opened and the ears of the deaf unstopped." The ailments listed by Isaiah are symbolic of our interior
illnesses: blindness to the needs of
our neighbor, unwillingness to hear Gods voice
and the inability to speak words of praise and gratitude. Through this miracle story, the Apostle
Mark also reminds us that no one can be a true
follower of the Lord without reaching out to the
less privileged in society.
Therefore, all three readings today speak of a God
who is passionately in love with His people. Unfortunately, many of us have lost the ability to recognize the goodness of God and His Voice calling
us for action. We are asked (Continues on page three)

As a faith community, let us keep

to give hearing to the deaf and voices to the mute.

In the Gospel, the people who participated in Jesus
healing miracle became witnesses to the power of
God. They were unstoppable because of their personal experience with Jesus and his healing and redeeming works. We too are called to bear witness
to Jesus. A community that is called to bear witness to the love of Christ must not neglect those
who are bowed down. (Psalm 146:8.)
Jesus desires to give us His healing touch in order
to free our tongues, our minds and our hearts so
that He may speak to the world through us. He
invites us to give Him our hearts so that He may
touch the lives of people in our day through us, just
as he touched the lives of millions through saintly
people like Francis of Assisi, Damien of Molokai,
Vincent de Paul and Mother Teresa. Like them, we
too can become the voice of the poorest of the
poor, the helpless, the downtrodden, and the unwanted living in our neighborhoods. May the compassionate touch of Jesus allow us to hear the cries
of the poor and the sick and to proclaim to the
world like the prophet Isaiah, Be strong, fear not!
Here is your God . . . for He comes to save you.

2015-2016 RELIGIOUS ED REGISTRATION ~ PRE-SCHOOL-CONFIRMATION
Registration will continue Monday through Friday. Registration will take place in
the Catechetical Ministry Office from 9:00 am - 3:00 pm.
What to Bring: Fees and your child's baptism certificate, if not already on file, are
due at the time of registration. Special Note: Families who are not registered at
Santa Sophia must provide a letter from their parish priest giving permission to attend Santa Sophia's religious education classes.
Prerequisite for Confirmation Level I: Completion of Religious Ed Level 8 or
graduation from a Catholic elementary school.
Prerequisite for Confirmation Level 2: Level I candidates must bring their
Sponsor Eligibility Form completely filled out, signed and sealed by the sponsor's
parish priest in order to register for Level II.
The Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Santa Sophia
Court 2520, invites all interested contestants to participate in
our 1st Annual Chili Cook-Off on Saturday, October 17th from
5:30 pm to 7:30 pm in Prendergast Hall. For an application to
enter your favorite chili recipe, please contact Chris Murphy at
Chrism2658@aol.com or 619-462-8058 after 4:00 pm. A cash
prize will be awarded to the first place winner. Space is limited
and the entry deadline is October 1st.

There will be a Family Orientation /Parent Meeting for parents who have registered their children for the 2015
-2016 Religious Education year. The meeting will be held Sun. Sept. 20, 9:00am-10:00am in Prendergast Hall.
Religious Education classes begin on Sun, Oct. 4th from 9:30am - 10:45am.
IF YOU HAVE NOT REGISTERED YOUR CHILD/REN you can still do so in the CMO between the
hours of 9:00am - 3:00pm.
For the convenience of parents who cannot make it during those hours we will be open Thursday Sept. 10, &
Thursday Sept. 17,11:00am - 7:00pm.
