Description
In this lesson students will learn second conditional through listening in the
context of problems and solutions about a new business.
Main Aims
To provide clarification of type 2 (second conditionals) in the context of
problems and solutions about opening anew business.
Subsidiary Aims
To provide specific information listening practice using a text about opening
a new business in the context of problems and solutions

Show some pictures on the board in
order to engage Ss into the topic and
the next stage of the lesson.(opening a
new business, terrace)
Ss talk about the pictures and make
predictions about the topic and the
pictures.
Show the picture of Simon, Yelena and
Lidia on the board before the listening in
order to introduce Ss what they will
listen to. Elicit and clarify some of the
words Ss may not know.
Ss read the 2 questions and understand
for what reason they will listen to. (What
kind of business is this? What are they
discussing?)
Play the recording.
Ss try to answer the questions in pairs.

Group the Ss to answer the questions.
Give Ss the answer key to check their
answers.
Ask Ss to discuss 'Which thinking hats
do they think each person is using why?'
in their groups.
Take some general feedback.
Hand out the extracts that show the real
and unreal conditionals.
Ss read and decide which situations are
real and which situations are imaginary,
in pairs.
Take general feedback.
Ask Ss to complete the forms of 1st and
2nd conditional before eliciting.
Elicit the rule on a couple of sentences
on the board, clarify the meaning by
asking CCQs: Are we talking about
future? Yes./ Is it likely to happen? Yes.
(1st cond.) Which tense is used in the if
clause? Past (2nd cond.)
Model and drill the sentences.
Ask Ss to fill in the gaps with the correct
from of the verbs in the box.
Give Ss the handout (1)of the activity
ask them to work in pairs.
Give Ss the answer key to check their
answers.
Explain Ss that they will put the words in
order to make sentences in if clause.
Hand out the activity(2) and wait Ss to
put the sentences in order.
Ask Ss to complete the sentences on
their own this time.
Ask Ss to go around the class and share
their ideas with others by using
conditionals.
"What would you do if ......?"
