Reverend’s Reflections March 2010
Dear People of St. Luke’s:
I’ve been thinking of community quite a bit recently. Here’s why, in no specific order of importance.

First, we’re smack dab in the middle of transition from ski season to spring sports and spring vaca‐
tion. I know that observation is only relevant to a portion of the congregation directly but since we
are all connected, and come together on Sunday mornings, our common life is part of the larger pic‐
ture. Scituate, and surrounding communities, have a definite seasonal rhythm. As a priest I want the
church seasons to provide the major contours of my community’s life. As a realistic citizen of 2010 ,
I know other demands are there. I ask myself, “if your job didn’t demand a steady Sunday a.m.
appearance, would you be spending time on weekends on the slopes or some equivalent place?”
Honestly…yes. Denise and I also raised a daughter—successfully!—through graduation from
college, so I’m keenly aware of what variety of good things we want for our kids, which entails lots
of competing activities.  In my heart of hearts I understand what directions people’s lives pull them
in, and yet I still long for people to be in church on Sunday. I think it’s important.

Second, in my position I’m privileged to get to know some people’s stories pretty deeply. Not every‐
one’s, but quite a few. So I know how church—not just Sunday mornings but the other activities
during the week and year—brings people together who otherwise might not know one another.
How that mix adds up never ceases to edify me, giving me as many reasons for giving thanks as
there are individual stories. Right now I guess I’m hearing some particulars of need, and the way
St. Luke’s has helped, and so I’m especially grateful right now for it.

Third, focusing specifically on our common worship at 10 a.m., for those who attend that service
rather than the 8, I want to pass on the observation that others have made to me, and one I own my‐
self: some of us come from other church traditions (most in this area from the Roman Catholic
Church), and there are perhaps two big differences between us and some others—WE SING
(congregation and choir), and we get these opportunities to gather after church for fellowship at
coffee hour and other gatherings. We’re a small enough congregation so that we can get to know
lots of others, but large enough to offer variety.

Fourth, I think church needs to be for people when we’re doing well—family is happy, economics
secure, and so forth—and when we are dealing with challenges. Just want to plant that seed. Church
is for celebrating and giving thanks for the good stuff. Church is as much or even more so when we
are facing any of those things that the world might label (incorrectly to my mind) as ‘failure.’ So job
loss, marriage struggles and endings, and so forth are part of what the life of Jesus, his cross, his
resurrection address.

So I’m glad you’re part of our community. I hope you find nurture for your souls, meaning for your
lives, a grounding for sorting out the priorities of what really matters most.

Peace , Grant

Appalachian Service Project

ASP is a Christian based organization whose goal is to repair homes for those in
need. Teens Corbin Foucart, Megan Rafferty, Bridget Wood, Nikki Yang,
Brenda and Jeremy Keys are all going to be going on the 2010 Appalachian
Service Project Trip. In addition to the teens, Bruce Foucart, Russ Wood,
Xuemei Yang, Steve Rafferty, Maureen Keys, Bruce and Judy Bent are going as
chaperones. Their trip will be from June 26th through July 4th.
There are a couple of ways you can help support the six teens from St. Luke’s on their mission
trip to Appalachia. On March 20th we are having our Grand Ole Opry, an Auction/Dinner/
Dance. It is at St. Mary’s Hall from 6:30 – 11:00pm. Tickets are $35 each. Tickets can be
purchased after Church Services or from Colette Wood or Maureen Keys. Stock sales: Purchase
a share of stock for $25 to support our teens. For a share you will receive a postcard from our
trip and the knowledge you will be helping a family in Appalachia. Shares are in the Narthex
and can be dropped off in the office or mailed in. For more information please call Maureen
Keys @545-1348 or email MOREHALP@COMCAST

Spaghetti Sunday – March 7th

Always Delicious. Always Entertaining.

Last call for tickets...

Join us on March 7th for the 5th Annual Spaghetti Sunday, our largest Youth Outreach fundraiser
of the year. The crew is back - Chip Dongara, Jamie Strobino and Michael Marrone, with a few
of their friends, to prepare their now-famous spaghetti luncheon. The sit-down family-style meal
includes pasta with your choice of bolognaise or marinara sauce, salad, bread and desserts and is
served immediately following the 10 AM service.
Space is limited so make your reservations as soon as possible. If you are unable to attend, you
can order sauce to-go. We are requesting that everyone pay upfront so we have firm numbers of
attendees. Ticket costs are Adults $10, Children $5, Family of 4+ $25 and To-Go orders $10.
The proceeds from this event help fund the outreach projects for the 7th, 8th and 9th grades. They
plan on serving meals at Long Island Shelter and St. Paul’s. Feel free to contact Karen Hirsh at
781-545-3947 or karenh@searchease.com.

YOUTH OUTREACH UPDATE

First, a huge thank you to everyone who made the bake sale in January a success. The children
in grades Pre-K through 2nd, raised about $100 for the Scituate Animal Shelter. They also got a
special visit from one of the shelter's success stories that Sunday.
Second, we will be raffling off "baskets" this spring to raise money for our outreach
efforts. The baskets will actually be canvas bags filled with different themes. More
information will go home with the children as we get closer.
For the students in the 3rd and 4th grades - they have been given the chal-
lenge of overfilling the basket in the narthex with food for the food pantry. Each
child has been asked to bring in food that they purchase or receive as donations (not
in raiding their pantries). Let's fill the shelves of the pantry again!
The 5th and 6th graders have changed their global focus for their outreach project. With the
recent devastation in Haiti, the children have redirected their focus to helping the
children of Haiti who have lost so much. The children will be collecting, and asking
the families of St. Luke's to help collect, new or gently used shoes, outside and inside
playthings (clean and in good condition toys, sports equipment, etc), and new art
supplies. We thank you in advance for your support!
Thank you!

DIOCESAN SPRING LEARNING EVENT - March 6th

Location Change: The diocesan Spring Learning Event will be held at the Cathedral Church of St. Paul (138
Tremont Street) in Boston. Please note this location change from Boston University. Childcare, by advance registra-
tion, will be available at the cathedral. Register online by March 1 here or via the home page of http://
www.diomass.org/.
**There will be prizes for the deanery with the most congregations represented and the congregation that
brings the most people! ** Afternoon workshop choices:
Milestone Ministries: Vital Partnerships Between Home and Congregation, led by The Rev. Chip Stokes, Vi-
brant Faith Ministries. Marking special events is a powerful way to engage parishioners of all ages and stages of life in nurtur-
ing their faith and spiritual growth. Milestones offer an opportunity to bring God’s presence into the home and connect the ritu-
als of daily life with the life of the congregation.
Finding Your Congregational Values, led by Liz McGill, Episcopal Divinity School, who will guide participants
through a tool to help congregations discover their values. Participants will receive materials to use in their parishes to identify
values and craft mission goals.
Where Your Gifts Meet the World’s Need, led by The Rev. Leslie Sterling, St. Bartholomew’s Church, Cam-
bridge. Perhaps you are still wondering what God put you on this earth to do. Perhaps you are already exercising your minis-
try, but have never had anyone properly acknowledge it. Everyone has gifts, and everyone has ministry. Where is Christ calling
you to use your gifts of the Spirit to meet the world’s deepest needs?
Small Groups and Soul Transformation, led by Marie Harkey, The Crossing. Through small groups, the contexts and
environments in which life-giving, intimate and empowering connections can grow between fellow followers of Jesus, spiritual
formation happens. Come learn how The Crossing uses authentic, concrete spiritual practices and the support and accountability
of small groups to transform individuals and grow leaders in the faith.
Preaching for Discipleship, led by The Rev. Canon Mally Lloyd, Canon to the Ordinary. In many congregations
the sermon is our best chance to preach, teach and model discipleship. Lay preachers and clergy will explore ways to encourage
and inspire, challenge and stretch people of all ages to live and proclaim their faith.
