Science has come a long way since Greek theory of

the elements, the water, fire, earth and water

GROUPS

Vertical Columns
Elements in each group have the same number of electrons in the outer orbital shell
(outer electrons are also called valence
electrons).
Every element in the first column (group 1)
have one electron in its outer shell while on
the other hand, the second column (group2)
have two electrons in its outer shell. As you
keep moving from one column to another the
electron gets higher.

PERIODS

Rows in the periodic table of elements.

All of the elements in a period have the
same number of atomic orbitals. (maximum
7 orbitals)

FAMILIES

Each of the elements in the Periodic Table can be

divided into one of nine groups. These groups
share many similar properties; both chemical and
physical.

NOBLE GASES

ALKALINE EARTH METALS

HALOGENS

LANTHANIDES

OTHER NON-METALS

ACTINIDES

METALLOIDS

TRANSITION METALS

ALKALI METALS

POST-TRANSITION METALS

The diagram show the reactivity of

the common metals.

Aluminium-*A light metal used in making airplanes, buildings, pots and

pans, etc.
Carbon-*Found in coal, oil, gas, living
things, and inks
Iron-*A strong metal used in the construction of buildings, steel and machines
Mercury-*A heavy, poisonous, metallic liquid used in some thermometers
Oxygen-*A gas necessary for respiration;
aids fires in burning
